Improving outcomes for mothers and babies starts with addressing the gaps in maternity care. Assistant Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Scott Barnett, Ph.D., is leading research on a potential drug that could prevent and stop preterm labor. The research could offer new hope for families, particularly those in maternity care deserts where access to specialized care may be limited. In Nevada, about one in nine births are preterm. In 2024, approximately 3,500 babies were born preterm or very preterm in the state. Scott and his team are exploring whether existing FDA-approved drugs could be repurposed to address this critical gap. Listen to Scott discuss the research and the challenges facing Nevada families on KNPR: knpr.org/show/knprs-state-of… @UNevadaReno | @UNRResearch | #UNevadaReno | #UNR | #UNRCABNR | #Biochemistry | #MolecularBiology | #UNRResearch | #FacesOfThePack | #PackPride | #Nevada
