Great advice here…
We are at the part of a hurricane event I call "baked in the cake". Very little will change between now and landfall, and only little wobbles will determine who gets the worst of the winds and surge. It's not going to suddenly weaken or turn, what we see will likely be what we get. The prep stage is wrapping up, and the hunker down time for those in the path of Isaias is nearing. Later today and tonight your goal is to get through the storm's fury so that you can get to the often endless-feeling recovery stage. The two parts of your preps should reflect that as well. Make your home ready to get through the storm as best as possible, then the hurricane kit should have what you need to get into the beginning of the recovery. Some tips, freeze bottles of water to extend refrigeration if power goes out. Preposition flashlights so you can find them in the dark. Make sure electric stoves/ranges are off during the storm. Use a carbon monoxide detector when running a generator. Don't rush to clean up after the storm, many injuries/fatalities come after the storm has passed.

The NOAA National Hurricane Center has just issued a Tropical Storm Watch part coastal Southern California, including city/county of San Diego. This is only second time such a product has ever been issued for any part of California (TS Hilary in 2023 was other instance). #CAwx

🚨 BREAKING: Isaias is now a CAT3 Major Hurricane on its final approach to the northern Gulf. @CNN @cnnbrk

Thank you for your service. We are grateful to you and your teams. 🙏
It's 5am and just landed in San Antonio for the second time today. You may have noticed we had to bug out shortly after arriving to the storm from Biloxi. A maintenance issue prohibited us from going in, so we landed in TX, swapped to a spare aircraft, and went back out. A 16 hour day, but we got it done. Truly a team effort between maintainers, ground support, and aircrews to make the hurricane hunting mission go.

Thursday morning thoughts on Isaias. The satellite presentation is less than spectacular (thankfully) following diurnal expansion, and while the upper cloud shield has expanded, the core continues to struggle against dry air and shear. This is a good sign in that the environment does not support a monster, rapidly intensifying storm right up to landfall tomorrow. But this does not take slow strengthening and the hurricane impacts threat off the table for a portion of the Gulf coast in the hurricane warning areas. Preps there should still be taken for all hurricane related hazards in these areas. Why? Because we never want to be surprised when a hurricane is approaching, expecting it to weaken or miss, we always plan like it will hit us, and hope it's just a minor blow. The diurnal clock is the natural timed increase in a tropical cyclone. And while it happened with Isaias overnight, it only expanded the upper cloud shield but now we see individual convective towers rotating around an not complete circle. So the cyclone is strengthening but thankfully struggling, and this is likely limiting rapid intensification.

While I do expect intensification of #TD9 over the Gulf, I don't think this is gonna be Milton 2.0. HAFS forecasts show quite a bit of shear even within the next couple days, before the storm even lifts towards the Gulf Coast. There's also a lot of dry air being advected into the core on the model. We will likely see some notable pressure falls thanks to the upper divergence, but as modeled, it's not a setup for extreme RI like other cases we've seen.

Looks like we'll have Tropical Depression Nine sooner rather than later. 12Z Google DeepMind (GDM) 1,000-member ensemble (just in) doubles down from 6Z, upping its odds of a major (Cat 3+) Gulf hurricane from ~45% to ~55%. Nearly all GDM members say we see Hurricane Isaias.

Our record streak of no Atlantic hurricanes this season may be nearing its end. Here are my thoughts on incoming “Isaias,” who needs to be preparing and why timing is everything with this storm. @CNN @CNNweather #neworleans #hurricane #forecast #gulf #tropics

Brand new models out Soon to be #Isaias 12Z (daybreak run) consensus still brings #storm to hurricane status in South-Central Gulf before weakening due to strong wind shear as it nears landfall along the Northern #Gulf Coast. Landfall late Friday-Saturday from #Louisiana to #Florida Panhandle, as a weakening system, but still will significant impacts. The peak label is placed at each model's maximum intensity point - so some models maximize the storm in the SW Gulf, while others further north. Still lots of uncertainty!! Remember there’s no need to be scared, if you are prepared. Prepare #neworleans #biloxi #mobile #pensacola #destin

We are monitoring a tropical disturbance in the Bay of Campeche near the tail-end of a Gulf Coast cold front that could end up impacting Gulf states in a few days. While poorly organized right now, thunderstorm activity is increasing, and this system has a chance to develop into a tropical storm later this week. Environmental conditions won't be a slam dunk here. The cold front is associated with the upper-level jet stream, causing strong wind shear along the Gulf Coast that disfavors an organizing storm. However, the position of a series of shortwave troughs over Texas through ~Friday also facilitates strong upper-level divergence over the Gulf near a jet streak entrance region, which could help the disturbance fight off the wind shear a bit. Computer models are splitting into two broad camps: 1. Most AI-based models (see AIFS example) show the system moving northeast more quickly, prior to the Texas shortwave trough lifting out. This would place the storm in the most favorable position to intensify, and would bring it into the central or eastern Gulf Coast by the weekend. 2. Several physics-based models (see ECMWF example) are slower to lift the disturbance northward, allowing the Texas shortwave to exit and the favorable jet dynamics to subside, giving way to a more purely hostile environment for a potential tropical storm. The result is a weaker, messier storm that waits until next week to attempt a move toward the Gulf Coast, if ever. Significant uncertainty remains in this scenario, but this disturbance is one to watch this week. Even if a strong storm is avoided, heavy rains may stay in the forecast for portions of the Gulf Coast. Keep an eye on the forecast from the National Hurricane Center, which currently gives a 70% chance of a tropical cyclone forming.

Fascinating! Thank you for this explanation 🙌🙏
The much talked about nor'easter is now well underway, with a large cyclone producing widespread rain and significant coastal flooding slowly making its way north. Slightly technical thread discussing its structure and forecast: 🧵
