At the local level, YIMBYs are probably losing on the margin. Most wins are at the state/federal level.
Despite the housing crisis becoming acutely worse the past couple years as YIMBYism has been ascendant, local politicians have doubled down on restricting housing supply.

The mayor has proposed a bill to finally build housing and a new library/community center in Chevy Chase. DC YIMBYs and our partners at @betterDCregion, @Ward3Vision, and @WIN_DC support this bill. Tell your CM to support the Chevy Chase Disposition Approval Act (B26-0801).

It may happen: The years-long fight over rebuilding the Chevy Chase Library and Rec Center and putting housing on top is now with the D.C. Council. @MayorBowser has formally transferred her public-private development proposal with 177 units of housing, 90 of them affordable.

I’m thrilled to see the mention of the Chevy Chase Civic Core. It’s been years of debate and discussion, and there is a lot of support in Chevy Chase for this project despite what the loudest voices want you to believe. Housing is an equity issue - people that need it - need it now, now 2 -5 years down the road. To delay or cancel this project is to deny someone without or insufficient housing - justice. We have to move faster on these housing projects!!! Can’t say that LOUD ENOUGH! Using public land makes the deal more affordable. And from what I hear this deal is structured with considerable affordability. Finally - it’s not a high rise. They knocked a floor off to balance community needs and concerns. Now, let’s move this over to Council and see the votes!
Interesting: In a new (legacy-building) letter to the D.C. Council, @MayorBowser says she's going to introduce bills to finalize some longstanding development projects in the city, including the Chevy Chase Civic Core, Poplar Point, Fletcher-Johnson, Georgetown Boathouse, etc.

If you're interested in running for one of these seats, let us know! It's probably too late to qualify for the ballot, but people win write-in campaigns for uncontested seats every year.

"You can't redevelop the empty Geico HQ bc it will destroy the trees!" claim the Friendship Heights NIMBYs whose homes destroyed almost all the trees 🤔
The project is also the subject of an ongoing lawsuit filed by the Friendship Heights Village Council, which contends the proposal conflicts with long-standing planning agreements. wtop.com/montgomery-county/2…

If you or anyone you know are interested in running for these ANC seats (or others), DM us or email hello at dcyimbys dot org.
You need to collect 25 signatures by August 5. Still doable, but time is running out!
In Ward 3 no one has picked up yet from 3A02, 3A04, 3E07, 3E08, 3F02 & 3F06. The 3E seats are AU Campus seats but if anyone in W3 living in these districts is interested in running please do! @Ward3Bikes @dcyimbys @cpsmartgrowth

With less than 1 week to go until the Aug. 5 filing deadline, there are a total of *65 ANC single-member districts* where no one has filed to run yet, as of July 29! This means that 18.8% of the District’s 345 SMDs don’t have any candidate running yet… dcboe.org/getContentAsset/55…

This dude is such a mensch. With him and our new mayor, we are going to build a bunch of apartments in Ward 3, hugely benefiting the people of DC, and there's nothing the NIMBYs can do about it.
These lawsuits always lose.
But they are extremely costly and a lot of developers won't even consider a discretionary zoning process for fear of the uncertainty which is something @Janeese4DC needs to fix when she is Mayor.

Here's the precinct map of D.C., and you can see that @Janeese4DC has so far cleaned up in almost all central parts of D.C., which includes Ward 1 and Ward 6, much of wards 4 and 5, and most of east of the river. This is an impressive showing by any measure.

"point access block" is a multifamily building organized around a single vertical access point: usually one stair, often paired with one elevator.
Instead of a long hallway serving dozens of apartments, each floor has a small landing with a few units accessed directly from that central core.
Nothing prevents PAB buildings from having a second egress off the back (like the spiral stair shown here) -- they often do.
The core, real question re: single stair buildings to rank and file firefighters should be this:
Which of these 2 buildings would you prefer in an active unit fire with risk of spread? Which requires more resources and is more likely to extend them to a point where you need to call in equipment from elsewhere, further delaying full response and increasing risk for anyone still inside?
The one with 12 units per floor, or the one with just 2?
Reality is the one on the left has a much greater fuel load, far more area to spread, higher risk of large scale collapse, and 6x more spaces and people to clear. And this double loaded corridor example is smaller than the norm. In practice the difference between the two is even greater.
Common single stair limits are a total floor area of just 4,000 sq ft. A double loaded corridor can be 46,000 sq ft - 11x the size and risk in a fire.
