If you run a local business, there is a big AI Search opportunity sitting on the website you already own. A new study analyzed more than 200,000 local AI searches and nearly 2 million citations. The result? 93% of the *unique* domains AI systems used as sources were individual business websites, and business websites accounted for 42% of all citations. So despite all the talk about Reddit, directories, review platforms and third-party sources, individual business websites still matter enormously in local AI Search. Let's go through it. By the way, if you want to see whether your business is appearing across Google AI, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Grok and broader AI search, start here. It's free: seo-stuff.com/free-audit BrightLocal analyzed 200,875 non-branded local AI searches across 1,342 business locations, multiple checks over 60 days and roughly 1.97 million citations. The searches were tested across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. The researchers found roughly 116,000 unique domains being used as sources. Around 108,000 were individual business websites, so approximately 93%. When BrightLocal looked at actual citation volume, individual business websites accounted for 42% of the nearly 2 million citations - still a massive share. And this is why local businesses focusing entirely on third-party platforms may be missing part of the opportunity. Yes, Google Business Profile matters, reviews matter, Yelp and relevant directories matter, and third-part authority matters. That said, AI systems are also drawing from a huge number of individual business websites. That means your website is not simply somewhere you send people *after* they discover you, it can also provide first-party information AI systems use to understand the business. So your website should make it extremely easy to understand: Who you are. What you do. Where you operate. Which services you provide. Who you help. What things cost when appropriate. What questions customers ask. And how somebody can contact you. This sounds basic, but look at the average local business website. A homepage. An About page. A contact form. Maybe one generic Services page. Then very little else. That gives Google and AI systems relatively little first-party information to work with. Imagine instead that you run an HVAC company in Los Angeles. Your website clearly covers AC repair, heat pumps, ductless systems, maintenance, pricing questions, service areas, common problems and repair-vs-replacement decisions. Now an AI system researching: "Best HVAC company for a heat pump repair in Pasadena" or: "Who repairs Mitsubishi mini splits near Burbank?" has considerably more relevant first-party information it can potentially encounter. That is the opportunity. And it is exactly why SEO Stuff puts so much emphasis on building useful content around the questions customers actually ask: seo-stuff.com/gold-plan-pack… The BrightLocal study found something else worth paying attention to. Ranking well in Google Maps did NOT automatically translate into equivalent AI visibility. Google Maps mentioned the tracked business in 66% of searches. Google AI Overviews:38%. ChatGPT: 33%. Google AI Mode: 32%. So a business can perform very well in Maps and still be missing from a huge portion of AI-generated local results. BrightLocal found Google AI Mode and AI Overviews shared only about 29% of the businesses surfaced in the study. ChatGPT overlapped with either Google AI surface only around 19-20%. Same local market, but potentially very different businesses being surfaced. You might dominate Google Maps, barely appear in ChatGPT, show up more frequently in AI Overviews and then disappear again in AI Mode. That is why checking one platform once is not enough, and it is also why AI Search Optimization should not be treated as a replacement for local SEO. The fundamentals still matter. There is another useful lesson in the dataset: individual business websites made up the overwhelming majority of *unique* domains used, but large platforms still generated enormous citation volume. Google Business Profile accounted for roughly 29% of citations in BrightLocal's source analysis. Yelp was another major source, particularly for ChatGPT. Local AI Search appears to rely on an ecosystem: your website, GBP, reviews, directories, industry sources, local publications, etc. You want accurate, consistent information across all of them. The one you have most control of, though, is your website. And it needs enough information for an AI system to understand whether the business actually fits that context. This applies to dentists, accountants, roofers, plumbers, real estate agents, contractors, veterinarians, financial professionals and almost every other local business. The more specific the customer's question becomes, the more useful detailed first-party information can become. That is where SEO Stuff's content packages fit especially well: seo-stuff.com/premium-conten… Instead of five generic pages trying to cover the entire customer journey, you build deeper coverage around services, problems, questions, locations, costs, comparisons and decision-stage searches. Then there is the authority side. Your own website is only one part of the local-search ecosystem. If the wider web consistently confirms that your business exists, operates in a particular location, provides certain services and is recognized by relevant third parties, that gives search and AI systems additional information beyond what you say about yourself. That is why SEO Stuff's done-for-you package combines content with contextual DR50+ authority placements: seo-stuff.com/gold-plan-pack… And if you want to see whether your business is already appearing across Google AI, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Grok and broader AI search, start here. It's free: seo-stuff.com/free-audit
You can win a customer on Google and still lose them when they ask ChatGPT whether they should buy. In fact, nearly 60% of customers now say that talking to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and so forth convinced them *not* to purchase something. That means there is a huge opportunity opening up for businesses right now. Let’s go through it. And if you want to see what ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI, Perplexity, Grok and broader AI search are currently saying about your business, start here. It’s free: seo-stuff.com/free-audit Recently Semrush’s Exploding Topics team recently surveyed 2,338 U.S. consumers about how they use AI during the buying process. One number really stood out. 57.5% of AI users said information from an AI chatbot had caused them to decide not to buy something. Among people who use AI at least weekly, that jumped to 69.7%. Basically, you can rank #1 on Google, run the ad, get the click, build the landing page, publish the case studies and convince the customer that your product might solve their problem. Then the customer opens ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity for a second opinion - and potentially changes their mind. That is a completely new part of the conversion funnel that most businesses are barely measuring. The influence works in both directions too. 57.51% of AI users said they had purchased something following an AI chatbot recommendation, while 59.27% said an AI recommendation had introduced them to a brand or product they did not previously know about. That creates a pretty enormous opportunity, obviously. Imagine somebody is about to buy from Company A. Before paying, they ask: “Is Company A the best option for a 20-person marketing agency?” The AI researches the category, finds comparisons, reviews, third-party articles, pricing information and use cases. And suddenly: “You may also want to consider Company B.” Company B just entered a buying decision it was not even part of five minutes earlier. That may increasingly be one of the most valuable parts of AI Search Optimization. And that is what SEO Stuff helps businesses with every single day. seo-stuff.com/gold-plan-pack… There is another number businesses should pay attention to. 47.54% of all consumers surveyed said they at least sometimes consult an AI chatbot for information about a company or seller before making a purchase. Among AI users, that rises to 65.42%. So the AI “background check” is becoming a real part of the buying journey. Someone hears about your company and asks whether the business is legitimate, what the reviews are like, what the downsides are, who the competitors are and whether there is a better option. Your potential customer may be researching you in an environment you do not control. Your broader digital footprint matters more than ever. Depending on the platform and query, AI systems may draw on your website, reviews, comparison pages, publications, directories, forums, news coverage and other available sources. So there are really two sides to the problem. First, your own website needs to clearly explain what you do, who you serve, what things cost, how you compare, what use cases you support and what results customers have achieved. Give AI systems accurate information to work with. But your website is not the entire internet. The second part is what exists about you elsewhere: credible editorial coverage, relevant backlinks, reviews, third-party mentions, independent comparisons and industry references. Those sources give AI systems additional evidence about who you are and where you fit. That is exactly why SEO Stuff combines content and authority: seo-stuff.com/gold-plan-pack… The content builds out the questions buyers are asking, while the authority side strengthens the third-party footprint around the brand. And this becomes especially important for non-branded questions. There is a huge difference between: “Is Salesforce good?” and: “What is the best CRM for a 15-person B2B company that needs HubSpot integration and does not want to spend more than $500 per month?” The second question creates room for brands the buyer may never have considered. Businesses should be answering questions like best X for Y, X vs. Y, alternatives to X, how much does X cost, is X worth it, who is X best for, what are the disadvantages and what should I look for before choosing? There is also an important Google angle. 65.01% of AI users surveyed said they had replaced at least some product-related Google searches with AI chatbot conversations, but the study did not find that people had simply abandoned Google. For many consumers, AI is complementing it. That is why I do not think businesses should choose between SEO and AI Search Optimization. You need both. And if you want to see where your business stands across ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI, Perplexity, Grok and broader AI search right now, start here: seo-stuff.com/free-audit

Google is now explicitly telling businesses to focus on AI search traffic alongside SEO. This comes straight from Google’s John Mueller. Someone asked him a question a lot of businesses are worried about right now: “Is SEO still enough, or do we need to start thinking about GEO too? Ranking on Google doesn’t guarantee your brand will show up in ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity.” Mueller’s response speaks for itself. He said: “If you have an online business that makes money from referred traffic, it's definitely a good idea to consider the full picture.” Translation: Google no longer views old-school Google Search as the only distribution channel that matters. And solving for that is a big reason why SEO Stuff (seo-stuff.com/gold-plan-pack…) is coming off another record month. If you want to see where your site stands across ChatGPT, Claude, Google and broader AI search, start here: seo-stuff.com/free-audit Then came the line from Mueller that probably should have gotten more attention than it did: “Thinking about how your site’s value works in a world where AI is available is worth the time.” That is an acknowledgment that AI already changes how traffic, visibility and attribution work. Ranking still determines eligibility, but AI does play an increasingly large role in site amplification. (If you want to see where your site stands across ChatGPT, Claude, Google and broader AI search, start here: seo-stuff.com/free-audit) Recently Google laid out what Search will look like from this point going forward. The new Search box will accept text, images, files, videos, etc. And it'll anticipate your intent before you even finish asking your question. It is already powered by the most advanced Gemini model ever put into search, and then layered on top of that, agents will now be able to run 24/7 in the background on behalf of the buyer. The new Search process works like this: Step 1: The buyer describes their problem, their category, their needs in full. Step 2: The agent breaks that down into sub-topics and maps out a plan. Step 3: It determines what intel is needed right now versus later. Step 4: It monitors blogs, news sites, and social posts continuously for relevant changes. Step 5: It sends the buyer a synthesized update with links and the ability to take action. All of which is to say, blue links are not going away in the short-term, but AI's influence over Search isn't magically going to start decreasing. If your business depends on referred traffic, pretending AI doesn’t exist is no longer realistic. This all matters because AI systems don’t rank pages from scratch so much as they pull from the existing ecosystem. In doing so, they favor the following: Pages that already rank well. Sites with clear entity definitions. Content that explains and compares Brands that are consistently referenced and attributable. Search in 2026 understands the topic and it needs to understand your business too. And that’s also why SEO Stuff is structured the way it is. Take the done-for-you plan, for example. seo-stuff.com/gold-plan-pack… AI systems summarize and compare. They repeatedly pull from: Best X for Y pages. X vs Y comparisons. Decision-stage buyer guides. Clear answers under question-based H2s. The done-for-you plan optimizes content, builds authority and is engineered to: Rank in Google first. Be cleanly summarized by AI systems. Answer questions directly and extractably. Tie answers back to a specific brand. Then there’s the done-for-you content package, which is for sites who have strong authority but aren't capitalizing on it. seo-stuff.com/premium-conten… Search in 2026 thinks in categories, entities and relationships. If your site doesn’t clearly answer: Who you are. What category you belong to. When you should be mentioned. AI systems won’t include you consistently. This package patiently builds: Full topical coverage. Entity reinforcement across use cases. Category-level authority. Freshness through expansion and updates. This is how you start being a recognized entity. And finally, the "authority-only" package, for sites that can handle optimizing content on their own but lack the authority necessary to be respected by Google and AI search. seo-stuff.com/premium-backli… Every serious study we’ve covered shows the same thing. AI systems are conservative. They reuse sources they already trust. Yes, backlinks from real, authoritative domains help rankings, but they also tell AI systems: “This source is safe to repeat.” Look, if your SEO foundation is weak, AI will expose it faster. If your foundation is strong, AI will amplify it across: Google Search. AI Overviews. Gemini. ChatGPT. Perplexity. And so forth. Google is literally telling you to understand how visibility actually works now. You should listen. And if you want to see where your site stands across Google and AI search, start here (it's free): seo-stuff.com/free-audit

Today, as featured in Business Insider, we're announcing two things: 1) Choo's story, and how he became "the most measured dog alive." 2) The launch of pawgen, our new dog longevity brand. A year ago, Choo was slowing down drastically. I started him on 500 mcg of BPC-157, adjusted for his bodyweight and worked up to 2 mg. Around week 6 he was running again and got his zest back. He can't tell me how he feels so I observe and I see less limping, easier breathing, and more energy. Today, Choo has two vets who make house calls, physical therapy, red light therapy, probiotics, testosterone therapy, etc. We test everything down to heavy metals. His story went viral, with Business Insider covering it and CBS coming to our house to film a day in his life. The reality is, most owners can't afford this. A vet visit can cost thousands of dollars whereas a month of peptides often costs under $100. That's why so many people are turning to them, and also why we're building pawgen.com - a dog longevity brand helping other dogs get a second chance. Thanks to Gabby Landsverk and Hilary Brueck at Business Insider for a fair and thorough piece, and to Edward Linsmier for the photos of Choo. You can read the full article in the link below.
