in 2008 grown ass adults made fun of me for reading a book in a laundromat and I felt that we were cooked, societally
Even though we're quickly moving towards a post-literate society, you can tell that books remain sacred objects that carry enormous power and authority in our culture based on how uncomfortable they make people who don't engage with them regularly

I’m sorry, but hackers remotely turning off refrigeration systems at hundreds of supermarkets and destroying all their fresh and frozen food is INSANE. We’ve connected so much of our physical world to the internet that apparently even keeping milk cold is now a cybersecurity problem. What the actual hell.
BREAKING: Hackers remotely defrost refrigerators at hundreds of French supermarkets, causing massive food spoilage.

I learned something very beautiful today. In French, “bibliothèque intérieure” means your “inner library” the invisible shelf you carry inside, filled with every story that’s ever shaped you.

It's ideologically, psychologically impossible to name this for what it is, so instead of talking about terrible governance causing economic damage and impoverishment that creates economic refugees, we talk about "expats seeking higher quality of life with lower cost of living."

When you work harder to earn more money that buys less goods and services of lower quality—you are becoming poorer. That's the word for it.

"Enshittification" is a sort of "safe horny" term for what is really just outright impoverishment and declining living standards due to economic insolvency from deindustrialization, demographic decline, hyperinflation, etc. You are just de-developing and becoming poor.
I hate this new upper middle class luxury phenomena where you get hotels or restaurants that sort of look the part cut corners here and there at still an expensive rate and they then pretend they're luxury. Biggest catfish era.

[whispers] k-12 schools don't use textbooks anymore
My hot take as a (STEM) instructor is that you should have read the textbook chapter ahead of it actually being covered in class to effectively get the most out of lectures. Lecture should not be the first time you’re encountering concepts. That’s the point of the textbook.

The monarch butterfly population has gone up this season by 64% and one of the reasons is because people are planting pollinators gardens. Look what we can do together with a common goal in mind. We need to plant more next year as their population is still not stable.

Per a note to Boston Globe staff today, the lesbian bar story generated 1,000 subscriptions to the paper yesterday. The Globe’s managing editor said it was “by far our best performing story of the year,” and appears to be “on pace to shatter all sorts of Globe records.”

If your child tells you they haven’t written an essay, I encourage you to assign one immediately. You need to know what your child’s writing is like. They should hand-write it if you’re worried about the use of AI. Here’s a list of sample prompts: gomotionapp.com/isrmsc/UserF…
