1/4 Chinmayi may doubt herself; her voice is like water in a vessel taking shape of the song. That’s her gift and her curse, because many listeners never realize it’s her singing 1. Jerry Amaldev’s Oonjalilaadi carries humming with the same lilt /classical poise as Vani Jairam.
I did learn this with probably an hour or so to give before going on stage and I am glad I had the opportunity. It is nice to be challenged instead of getting into comfort zones of having hours to know a song enough to play with the words, the tune. Am I still a student eager, sincere enough to do what I should as a professional as well? Deliver even if it is not perfect for me? I am hyper critical of my singing in an acidic, corrosive way. I am perhaps the worst cursing critic of myself - that voice plays in my head whilst I am singing. Perhaps it is my mother’s voice that rarely if never, praised me because she wanted to keep me grounded. Perhaps the sole reason I have a massive imposter syndrome and dont think its ever going to change. Maybe that’s necessary for who I am as a singer, maybe not. I ll never know. Though I say so myself, 25 years of being a professional singer doesnt make me any more confident than the first time I sang on a stage in Delhi for Sangam Kala Group (and won for Ghazal) or singing Thesulavudhe on Sun TV. Improvisations, to me, needs time to become friends with the song. Maybe next time I would sing it differently maybe I wont. But all that I know- I love singing. And thats all that matters.

It is okay, Elon. In academia at least we learn how to cope with criticism. I think it is a pity you chose another route. The route of least intellectual resistance.

Decided to do a follow-up to this one today. Malayalam this time, since Keralappiravi etc. 🙂 Thread⬇️
Did a new compilation on insta - instances where composers have sung for each other (composer A sang for composer B, and vice versa). Sharing it as a thread here as well. Started with Hindi, planning to do Tamil and Malayalam as well at some point.

#Thread This thread was inspired by a happy debate with @baradwajrangan: how did some of Hindi and Bengali cinema’s biggest composers find their way into Malayalam films? Many were modest productions, even by Malayalam standards. Here are 10. Feel free to add your favs.

cuz you can't hear this on Spotify :) on.soundcloud.com/wEM8oQf1X9…
cuz you can’t hear this on spotify Veerapandi Kottayilae with a full symphony orchestra (from A. R. Rahman concert yesterday at Dallas, Texas) has slightly extended orchestral interludes. Perfect song to perform with a symphony and this performance is so fricking tight. (Use headphones)
