🦔An AI data company called HUMXN is offering free plumbing, electrical, HVAC and cleaning work to homeowners in Minneapolis, Chicago and Miami. In exchange, the technician wears capture gear that records the whole job, and HUMXN sells that data to companies training robots. The homeowner pays nothing and the company says the tradesperson still gets paid. My Take Paying for the data is a step up from what we usually see. Last week Amazon asked people to spend $75 plus $12 a month on a device that records them, and HUMXN covers the repair bill to get its footage, so at least the homeowner gets something back. HUMXN says the people creating the value will share in the economics, but it hasn’t said how much reaches the person whose years of skill are on the recording. Trades work has been the go-to advice for anyone afraid AI will take their job. A robot that can fix a furnace in a Minneapolis basement is still years off, and I think technicians should negotiate for a share of their data now, before a camera on every job turns into a normal hiring condition.
