🛬 Touchdown in Montréal 🇨🇦
Rarely have I looked forward to a Summit this much.
An ocean separates Europe and Canada. Yet we have never felt closer.
We have a new ambition: bringing Canada closer to us than ever before, as Associate Member of the EU.
And we want to take our unique partnership even further.
With an Alliance for the Future, we will stand together and respond to a world of growing rivalries.
Montréal, we’re about to write a new chapter in our shared history.

« Le gouvernement fédéral a fait le choix d’empêcher le Québec d’avoir un droit de parole sur son propre territoire. Il s’agit d’un manque de respect élémentaire envers le Québec et une négation du rôle de notre parlement qui nous rappelle la nécessité d’être pleinement maîtres chez nous », dénonce Marie-Claude Sarrazin, ministre responsable des Affaires intergouvernementales canadiennes.

They allow Netanyahu - a war criminal indicted by the ICC - to fly through their airspace whenever he wants, and then they pretend to be defenders of the ICC. As usual, they’re insulting our intelligence.

forgot to mention:
Congratulations to lawyer and human rights activist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on her Nobel Peace Prize.
Few have devoted their lives to justice, peace and human dignity like she did.
From the violence of apartheid in South Africa to the horrors of the Rwandan genocide, she has confronted some of humanity’s darkest chapters.
She has looked the brutality of injustice in the eye and never looked away.
She is the defender of the persecuted, the vulnerable, the voiceless and the excluded.
Of the rule of law over the right of might.
In a world that needs justice more than ever, her courage and moral clarity are a precious compass.

you’re appalled a flag got knocked over.
we’re appalled that europe facilitated a genocide.
We are appalled by reports that MEP Rima Hassan knocked down the Israeli and European flags displayed at the European Parliament as part of an exhibition honouring the victims and hostages of the October 7 massacre.
If confirmed, this goes far beyond political disagreement or provocation. These flags formed part of a memorial to the victims of the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust and to those abducted by Hamas. To deliberately interfere with such a memorial, on the eve of the anniversary of the attacks, would show a profound contempt for their memory and for the suffering of their families.
That such an incident is alleged to have taken place inside the European Parliament makes it all the more serious. We call on the Parliament to establish exactly what happened, make the relevant evidence public and, if the allegations are confirmed, take appropriate disciplinary action.
The victims of October 7 and the hostages deserve dignity and respect. Their memory must never become a target for political provocation.

“Complex political issue”
Ed Sheeran addressed the controversy surrounding Macklemore's removal from his tour. "I never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about free speech and the most complex political issue on the planet," he said.

Most African LLMs are Western models with a sprinkle of Swahili.
Vambo AI just released MORENA: a 1.5B model trained from scratch for 12 African languages. Not a fine-tune. Open weights. Commercial use allowed.
It beats models from Google, Meta, Alibaba and Hugging Face on African language modelling and translation while being up to 8× smaller.
Training compute: about $40k of GPUs.
Shona, Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Kinyarwanda, Setswana, Afrikaans, isiNdebele, Nigerian Pidgin.
This is the part people keep saying Africa “can’t do.”

$40,000 worth of GPUs
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗔: the largest African language model ever trained from scratch, at 1.5 billion parameters. Not a fine tune, this was trained from the ground up for Africa. 🌍
Trained on 12 African languages, it beats models from Google, Meta, Alibaba and HuggingFace on African language modelling and translation while being up to 8x smaller.
𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗔 doesn't belong to us. The weights are open and free to use commercially, so researchers can build on a base that doesn't treat African languages as an afterthought.
Weights in the comments.
Thanks to @UNDP, @AIHub4SD and CINECA for the GPUs and the support. None of this happens without them.
