That's...really not what it is. Fandom is also a living thing were ppl are always exchanging ideas. No one who posts a prompt is DEMANDING a writer to write it, but rather expanding the imagination of whoever comes across it. And if someone wants to write it, all the best+
Replying to @Coolcrying_2931
+ I'm not saying that's BAD, but at its heart it treats authors as a kind of content machine that spits out works in exchange for ideas. Writing isn't really supposed to be like that. Writing is an exploration. It involves a person playing with words, ideas and emotions. +

What i'm learning is that there's a class of AO3 writers who really think they belong to a different class of fans. They don't see themselves as fans sharing creativity with other fans, but as Writers doing a "service" to fandom. To which "non-writers" should be grateful for+

THISSSS, we're not mad at the kind writers that want recognition for their work. We hate the people who obviously only see fanfics as content for attention and money, that don't understand the law and are throwing out (legal) threats at everyone and anything.
people are not mad at writers for 'nicely asking for engagement'. you're being deliberately disingenuous. writers threatened fichub, threatened to quit, threatened to strike, threatened to paywall fics, and are treating non-creators like parasites and second-class citizens.

what i really hate about this discourse is that it's showcasing some people truly believe that they are another class of fan if they write fanfiction and fandom would be bereft without them. fandom can and does persist without fanfic and fanartists.

THIS!!! you guys have been SO NASTY and DEMANDING. you're insulting the readers whose attention you covet so much. it's all been a circle jerk of fragile egos and entitlement. threats, teeth, and tirades, that's all you've given anybody.

craziest thing about history is how often your children would just die. and not that long ago. i'm reading a bio of Lincoln and it just slips that his kids kept dying tragically. today that's a life-defining event. did everyone just walk around with PTSD or what

AO3 writers are very quick to come after readers but if this outage showed one thing it is actually...how much genuine DISDAIN and LACK OF RESPECT some AO3 writers feel towards the original creators of the works they use for their fanfics.

reading anna kerenina for the first time and at the risk of making a ridiculously facile observation it's crazy the extent to which a nineteenth century russian novel is basically just riffing on all the same bullshit we're talking about in 2026

sorry oomfs to enter discourse but this is pissing me off LOL. this is exactly the problem with fandom culture rn THOSE AREN'T FREELOADERS THOSE ARE YOUR FELLOW FANS. you are all fans. FANdoms can't survive without FANS. fandoms need lurkers too!! that's the MAJORITY!!
Fandoms can survive without freeloaders. Fandoms CANNOT survive without creatives.

I just find it sad that ppl actually believe if you don’t “contribute” to fandom thru drawing or writing etc. you’re in the bottom rung and don’t get a say in anything. Since when did personal enjoyment become something so serious like identity and social hierarchy

can't control what happens on the rest of the internet but i sincerely hope no one that follows me will be so misinformed as to think that the sham ao3 sites popping up are sourcing their data from fan-shared gdrives of pdfs and epubs. lets have some basic tech literacy pls

not only anti-piracy but also deeply anti-AO3, and I will not elaborate.
i am so serious but i need a list of every single person who is complicit to this since ao3 was shut down. i don't even go there, but these people most probably are anti piracy websites, and behind the shut down of very known sites that we have lost this year.

this is pure insanity I hope everyone who has been harassing them chokes YOU CAN DOWNLOAD EVERY SINGLE FIC OFF OF AO3 DIRECTLY THE ONLY DIFFERENCE HERE IS THAT THEY ARE STILL ONLINE WITH BACKUP FILES

never thought i’d see the day where fandom cannibalizes itself man wtf
fichub is no longer turning ao3 fics into epubs bc the writers went in there threatening to throw lawyers at the one (1) person running the site you can notttt make this shit up

Unsurprising that nuance is dead but the website that scrapped ao3 and is trying to charge $ for fanworks is SO VASTLY DIFFERENT than fans sharing epubs and PDFs with other fans. Acting like these are equivalent is a misrepresentation and actually not helpful.

In my undergrad thesis many many years ago, I included lurkers (folks who don't interact much, not even to leave a comment at times, but read fic or look at fanart, watch edits/fanvids, etc.) because fandom has long seen lurkers as key members of the community. Lurkers were never seen as bad, they were just doing community quietly. In fandom, you give what you can give and your participation or role is never something that is set in stone. You can be a lurker one day and organizing a Christmas challenge the next. You can be less active today and more in the future. And so on. Do not let people make you believe that you have to be productive and/or visible all of the time to be seen as a "real fan". But also, do not forget that when you're part of a community, you're not alone, and giving people small kindnesses, like liking a post or even just sending up a positive emoji when you see something you've enjoyed is part of maintaining a healthy, happy community. It does make a difference. (That said, please don't shake people down for positive interactions. We're all humans trying to find joy on a planet in a polycrisis.) Remember: You love the thing, you show it in your own way, and belong to a community. Do all that and treat people kindly, and that's all you need to be a fan. Do not lose the fun and whimsy!

Have a good week everyone and remember: Embarrassment only exists because we mistake vulnerability for humiliation. There’s nothing inherently shameful about trying, caring, reaching out, or being seen. We give other people’s perceptions far too much power over our existence.x
