Replying to @HearsayDaily
@HearsayDaily is an amazing resource that anyone interested in law-related news in Canada should follow. It’s a quick daily read that pulls together everything from case summaries to legislative developments to local stories. Not sure how @DylanJGibbs does it but I’m glad he does

I too am running for a CLA Toronto position and would ask you to vote for me of course, but there are 8 spots and I hope you also consider Chris for one of those spots. He's dedicated to the practice of criminal law and would be an amazing addition to the board.

But hard to see how the statement that “academic commentary or scholarship … is not properly the subject of judicial notice” squares with Le at paras. 82-89, which recognizes that “authoritative studies, research and articles” can establish social context via judicial notice

I'm going to stop sharing Law Roach quotes but this is hilarious. To his clients wondering "what does this mean for me?" Law: "It means you have to get another stylist." scream.

Pretty remarkable result — leave to cross-appeal granted based on a request in the hearing and full-indemnity costs throughout. I'm glad the SCC saw what was clearly the right result. I just hope that 6 years later, CCD and its counsel still have the will to see this through.

Yes. The maple syrup thing is funny. But this area of law is messed up and can doom people to owe sums they will never be able to pay back for the rest of their lives, meaning that a jail sentence hangs over their heads for years—in addition to their actual sentence.
The Supreme Court upholds a fine of more than $9 million for a Quebec maple syrup thief. Read our plain-language summary here: scc-csc.ca/case-dossier/cb/2… #criminallaw #maplesyrup

So pleased to see my article co-written with @ElenaSophieDA published in this special issue. We analyze Gascon J.’s federalism jurisprudence and conclude that his pragmatic approach should guide Cdn courts. Thanks to @jeremy_bonnelly & @JoshuaSealy for organizing this tribute!
This bilingual volume dedicates itself to the legacy of The Honourable Justice Clement Gascon, who became a judge of the Supreme Court of Canada in 2014 and retired in 2019. Just Published: Supreme Court Law Review, Volume 103 ow.ly/yWiV50H8qRj @JoshuaSealy @jeremy_bonnelly
