I too am running for a CLA Toronto position and would ask you to vote for me of course, but there are 8 spots and I hope you also consider Chris for one of those spots. He's dedicated to the practice of criminal law and would be an amazing addition to the board.

I'm going to stop sharing Law Roach quotes but this is hilarious. To his clients wondering "what does this mean for me?" Law: "It means you have to get another stylist." scream.

Pretty remarkable result — leave to cross-appeal granted based on a request in the hearing and full-indemnity costs throughout. I'm glad the SCC saw what was clearly the right result. I just hope that 6 years later, CCD and its counsel still have the will to see this through.

This is gonna be fun:
come watch me get out of the way as the lawyers behind Sullivan, Chan, and Brown—@SDiGiuseppeLaw, Michelle Biddulph of @GHW_barristers, @pouchbaby, @martelldefence, and @MDRobitaille and Matt Gourlay of @HeneinHutchison—discuss the importance and implications of the decisions

Yes. The maple syrup thing is funny. But this area of law is messed up and can doom people to owe sums they will never be able to pay back for the rest of their lives, meaning that a jail sentence hangs over their heads for years—in addition to their actual sentence.
The Supreme Court upholds a fine of more than $9 million for a Quebec maple syrup thief. Read our plain-language summary here: scc-csc.ca/case-dossier/cb/2… #criminallaw #maplesyrup

So pleased to see my article co-written with @ElenaSophieDA published in this special issue. We analyze Gascon J.’s federalism jurisprudence and conclude that his pragmatic approach should guide Cdn courts. Thanks to @jeremy_bonnelly & @JoshuaSealy for organizing this tribute!
This bilingual volume dedicates itself to the legacy of The Honourable Justice Clement Gascon, who became a judge of the Supreme Court of Canada in 2014 and retired in 2019. Just Published: Supreme Court Law Review, Volume 103 ow.ly/yWiV50H8qRj @JoshuaSealy @jeremy_bonnelly

Today, I had the immense honour and privilege of representing the LGBT+ Family Coalition at the @SCC_eng, where we intervened to argue the “biological factor” should be eliminated from the best interests of the child analysis in custody law. Now we wait for the Court’s reasons!

Just posted my new paper on the Crown's prerogatives and the Constitution, which focuses on the subtle relationship between constitutional and prerogative executive powers and the basis for the federal-provincial distribution of prerogative powers: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.….

for senior lawyers reading this thread interested in running a similar “101” session for your practice area, I’d be happy to provide the same support I gave Harpreet. I’ll set up the registration, take care of everything on the back end, would just appreciate ur time & insight 🙏🏽
Hey. Behind on work but just wanted to say a quick thing. Two times I hosted a thing where I spoke to students and new calls about the basics of criminal defence. The response was positive. But I'm not here to collect my roses. Here's why I bring this up..... 1/5

Quite the passage here from Miller J.A. in Sitladeen (at para 100): ontariocourts.ca/decisions/2… Anti-critical race theory dog whistles, galore—which is no surprise, in a case involving anti-Black racism and policing. A brief thread of #CriticalRaceTheory critique.

After the final “Race, Racism and the Law” class @uocommonlaw, my incredible students compiled a video of appreciation for what the course meant to them in their legal studies. I was incredibly touched (😭). And listening to their reflections caused me to reflect on #LegalEd 🧵
