On Saturday, I conducted a one-hour presentation for students of journalism and IR at the St Joseph's University, Bengaluru, about the role the media plays in informing and influencing policymakers and the public. I had an incredible time interacting with this bright bunch!

The Modi-led govt has pushed through the Ken-Betwa link project. We found there is a bizarre story unfolding in how the government is compensating those it is forcibly displacing. The lowered caste are being given less compensation than the ‘upper’ caste displaced families. 1/3

first you delete . then you make an appeal to apply using form 6 with an illegal declaration ( liable with a 1 year jail term for misrepresentation) that you are a "first time voter"!!
The election Commission and its proceedures are a cruel joke on people, democracy, and citizens
VIDEO | Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer V Anbukumar says, "I appeal to all the eligible voters of Karnataka. If your name is not there in the electoral roll, kindly apply through Form 6, your name will be definitely added into the electoral roll after due verification. I could assure, we have taken lot of special drives, campaigns and publicity campaigns. So, every voter is aware of and I specially appeal to voters who complete 18 years of age. The moment you complete 18 years of age, kindly apply immediately, definitely enrol your name into the electoral roll."

At least 61,059 Form-7 applications seeking the deletion of names from Karnataka’s electoral rolls were filed by election officials themselves, with not a single application mentioning a reason for the deletion, a mandatory requirement under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960.

This was in Nagarbhavi at 9 am. Police contables also accompanied them. How is this loud marching with a band allowed in public but a peaceful protest outside Freedom Park isn't?
Where are the "only freedom park", "traffic jam", "public inconvenience" warriors now? The @PoliceBangalore and @CPBlr must make public the application for permissions and the permission letters.

My dear friends, please, I hope to demand your absolute attention to this matter:
In 2018, my junior from St. John’s Medical College, Bengaluru, Dr. Randall Sequeira (middle in the pic), trekked up a steep, bauxite-rich plateau in Odisha to hold a monsoon health camp in the indigenous Kutiya Kondh village of Kutrumali.
In a piece he wrote then titled "Kutrumali’s Demons," Randall described sleeping under a dripping school roof in freezing fog, borrowing utensils from a local health worker to cook khichdi, and waking up at 6 AM to a line of tribal mothers. He wrote with heartbreak about treating malnourished toddlers with protruding bellies and visible ribs, listening to stories of stillbirths and chronic fevers, while noticing the shiny new solar lights installed by a mining conglomerate eyeing the aluminium ore beneath the villagers' feet.
Comparing his small medical team to hobbits sheltering in the night, Randall worried about the outside forces coming for that fragile village.
Randall stayed with the tribal/ adivasi community to serve them. After St. John’s and an MD in Internal Medicine from SMS Jaipur, he gave up every comfort of urban medicine to live in Kalahandi, recognizing that clinical prescriptions are meaningless when indigenous communities are stripped of their forests, water, and dignity.
On the night of October 16, Odisha police picked up Dr. Randall Sequeira and Dalit activist Laxman Naik at 11 PM from his home in Bhawanipatna. A gentle physician who has spent years trekking up hills to save tribal children is now locked in Rayagada sub-jail under frivolous but draconian charges (attempt to murder, dacoity), simply for standing with Adivasis peaceful protesting the mining of their sacred hills in Sijimali and Kutrumali.
thewire.in/rights/randall-se…
Odisha Govt. said it will cut down forests to connect tribal villages. But it was a way to bypass green laws and fast track London based Vedanta’s, and Adani's mining plans. Local organisations estimate that around 45 villages depend on these hills and would be affected.
reporters-collective.in/trc/…
The state has answered with repression rather than dialogue. In the last three years, at least 43 police cases have been filed and over a hundred Adivasis and Dalits, both women and men, have been incarcerated in Odisha jails. For example, from In March and april 2026, 8, 2026, to April 8, 2026, within one month, 24 people were sent to jail, 217 were made accused, and the number of “others” total 1,140. An activist who was not named in the original FIRs, but has since been implicated in about 12 cases, so that bail in one case is followed by arrest in another. This pattern of capture and releases have been used to crush rational dissent.
Dr. Randall understood that being a good doctor means understanding that prescriptions cannot compensate for the denial of land rights, that surgery cannot undo displacement and that no medical can substitute for the basic infrastructure a government has failed to provide.

To my fellow medical fraternity, and every citizen with a conscience: a kind physician who embodies the highest ethics of our profession is being criminalized to clear the way for bauxite mining. Please do not let his voice be buried in a sub-jail.
Amplify this, demand due process, and demand the immediate release. Please sign in this form to show solidarity: forms.gle/o2Rj2Uu3tXaoWu9dA

Of these, 2,254 were filed “in bulk” by just 112 people, seeking deletions even before SIR began

Karnataka Police—under Congress rule—manhandled and detained protesters in an AISA called protest at Bengaluru’s Town Hall today. Many of the cops didn’t wear name tags, or uniform. This, despite assurances from the state CM and Home Minister that protests are our democratic right, after similar detentions days earlier.
I wish @AISA_tweets president Neha Bora @neha_aisa, speaks up against this suppression of peaceful protest under Congress rule as she does under BJP rule. The defence of democracy should not be partisan.

In Surat dozens of workers were detained by local police before they could start their protest demanding Sunday off, 8 hours shift, better pay, among others. They also alleged their senior leaders were arrested to suppress their agitation "Gaon Chalo Andolan" @DeccanHerald
First-person account by friend and former colleague @pushkarv, who was manhandled by a plainclothes police officer while he was simply doing his job as a photojournalist. He recounts how other protesters were shoved and dragged by cops, blatantly using excessive force. Do read.

Protesters in Bengaluru allege police assault and forceful detention as they gathered for a march demanding that SIR be scrapped and Gyanesh Kumar resign.
They allege police confiscated placards and detained people before the march even began. Protesters also allege that journalists were beaten and manhandled, young protesters were assaulted and women were dragged into buses.
These are allegations made by protesters.

The Congress government doesn't need to approach the Court to remove this order. It is a Police Order. The Karnataka government can repeal this order TODAY if it wants to.
Every day this unconstitutional order stays in effect, it is because the CONGRESS GOVERNMENT WANTS IT TO.
But @CPBlr says protests outside Freedom park will not be allowed. The congress govt had promised to approach court against this rule, but they didn’t. Instead, they are into detaining citizens protesting

The response of @DKShivakumar and @PriyankKharge are welcome and reflects their accountability. Beyond what is said, the Licensing Order, 2021 by Commissioner of Police, Bangalore, restricting protests to Freedom Park, brought in when there was a BJP government, must be withdrawn

The right to peaceful protest is fundamental to our democracy. We cannot demand that right for ourselves in Delhi and deny it to others in Bengaluru.
I have taken note of yesterday’s incident involving protesters and members of the media. I have sought a full report on the circumstances that led to the police action. If there has been any unnecessary use of force or excess, accountability will follow.
Let me be clear: disagreement with the Election Commission, disagreement with my government, or disagreement with me personally does not diminish anyone’s right to peacefully express it.
Karnataka must hold itself to the democratic standards that we expect from the rest of the country. There will be no double standards.

Karnataka SIR: Details of about 29,000 Form 7s seeking deletion of names from electoral rolls, received in Karnataka have not been made public on the portal of ECI or on State’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). Why the delay @ceo_karnataka @ECISVEEP
thehindu.com/news/national/k…
This is atrocious! So-called "progressive" govt, where the CM pretends to be pro-protests in Delhi while his goon cops wreak havoc in Bengaluru. Why are cops assaulting protestors and a photojournalist, who was only doing his job? Nobody has the right to manhandle anyone!
A few cops behaving like goons, bringing disrepute to the entire #Bengaluru police force.
As photojournalists rushed to cover the police action against SIR protesters, cops allegedly snatched cameras and damaged phones. Men in mufti—one in a pink checked shirt, another in blue stripes—joined the assault.
Who provoked whom (check the video)? Who will hold the cops accountable?
