Breaking: at least six more journalists detained, shoved into a van by Delhi Police as they were asking the cops about the detention of a journalist moments ago at the same location.
As I question the police, one of them tells me: ‘this is not the right time to ask anything’.

If the SC does not step in to order the police forces to stop the violence by them on peaceful lawyers & other protesters, & does not order the police to detain right wing goons who are perpetrating & threatening violence on protestors, it will not only become irrelevant, but will also become the object of ridicule in the country & internationally

SC begins hearing pleas listed for today.
Maneka Gurusamy: l will start with the Contempt plea over closure of metro stations.
SC: What we will do is, regarding metro stations, we will ask the Govt to file a response by Tuesday.
Maneka Gurusamy: It’s not just the closure of metros, not just about the 7,000 people detained, not just about the 45 reported detention centres.
The Constitution says that the 19 rights can only be curtailed when an Emergency is invoked. Is the Govt saying, an undeclared emergency is in place now ? We don’t know how many have been detained till now ?

Between the COVID lockdown and these random restrictions today, it is quite clear that our Constitution does not really need any provisions pertaining to the declaration of an Emergency. The state can do what it wants under normal criminal law, the courts cannot do anything.

UPDATE: Three Newslaundry reporters detained by Delhi Police.
Our reporters @AshwineSingh, @SavyasachiAstha, and @anmolpritamND have been detained while covering the October 10 protest. Delhi Police have also seized Newslaundry’s official phones, which our reporters were using to carry out their reporting duties.
When the journalists identified themselves as media personnel, they were reportedly told, “Koi media nahin hai.”
Around 30 people have been put into a single bus, including protesters and journalists. Our reporters have identified Inspector Dhan Singh Malik as the officer who snatched the phones.
Journalists are there to report, not to protest. They were not obstructing police operations. On what grounds are they being detained and their phones seized?
@DelhiPolice must explain these actions and allow journalists to do their jobs without intimidation.
