This is why I detest the idiot notion that Rustaceans have to replace ALL code with their pet language. Memory problems weren't your sole issue. Never WAS. You're fixing things like you'd fix a dog or cat and it'd be humorous and embarrassing if you weren't doing MASSIVE systemic damage while you're off being idiots.
Rust Coreutil replacement is “so subpar I don't even have words”, according to… developer of Rust Coreutil replacement. And this is shipping in Ubuntu? Woof. It appears that the developers of UUtils (the Rust Re-writes of the GNU Coreutils) are beginning to realize that replacing code dealing with “absurd” numbers of “edge cases”, developed and tested over decades… is not as easy as they thought it might be. Even with the magical, unicorn fart powered Rust programming language. One (of many) such cases: The Rust replacement for the GNU Timeout command is utterly broken. And the Rust devs appear to be at a loss for how code could ever possibly cover so many “edge cases”. From the Rust devs: “Timeout requires a rewrite I've attempted 10 times since last October or November.” “GNU timeout is just absurdly full of undocumented edge cases … and we don't even cover half.” “Our actual implementation is so subpar I don't even have words.” “I'm just frustrated with uu timeout to the point of absolute exhaustion.” github.com/uutils/coreutils/…

I write a lot of Swift and ship a decently complicated macOS application so I think I'm allowed to have an opinion on this. But, how can anyone like Swift? Seriously it's such a circle jerk of abstraction bullshit. It truly insists upon itself relentlessly. Just horrible.

I think C is a wonderful programming language but it's easy to shoot yourself in the foot if you don't know the tricks, so I put together a video of some of the tips I've learned over the years. Video ⤵️

I’m seeing more discourse surrounding C especially people saying it produces “buggy code”. Homies, please sit down, self reflect think about the bugs you see in software daily, usually they are logic bugs the language choice is irrelevant, blame shitty insane frameworks instead.

I hate it when languages try to be "smart" and return some weird type when I'm expecting an array/list. It's super awkward to have to deal with some LazyWeirdVoodooShitIterator or FunkyWeirdIterable that's not interchangeable with a normal f'ing list.

“You dont need to learn C, I didnt” Anyone telling you that is limiting you in favor of their ego Most of the worlds software is in C/C++ Operating systems, browsers, game engines, your favorite programming language Is most likely written in C/C++ It certainly helps to understand how a computer works and what your programs are doing Especially starting off It will make you a better programmer C syntax is simple and there are a ton of resources on learning it Do a couple projects in C Then move onto a a higher language

Any other programmer do this weird thing? When I've scrolled away in my code editor to check something, I often use undo to jump back to where I was actually working (followed by a redo to undo the undo).

Utilizing C motivated me to create my own tech stack while developing Disk Voyager, a modern & fast file explorer. By writting everything from scratch I get to: - Hand tailor everything to my project needs. - Be in control of all code. - Avoid unnecesary bloat. (700kb single exe) - Differentitate from competition. - Explore (pun intended) new things. (powerful search, multiple cursors..) - Write with performance in mind. (instant startup, blazing indexing) - Acquire deeper understanding of how various components (e.g. NTFS) function. Why? Because we deserve better than Windows file explorer. Register for alpha, coming out this year -> diskvoyager.com/alpha
Reasons I use C: - It's a small and simple language. - It's stable and changes infrequently. - It provides low-level, manual memory management. - I can see actual CPU instructions. - It has a decades-old development ecosystem. - It works everywhere. - It allows for direct interaction with major operating systems, which expose low-level APIs in C or C++. - I want my code to remain runnable 10-20 years from now. Not the reasons I use C: - Because I believe it's perfect. - Because I'm a "fan" of it. - Because I think it has all the features I need. I write in C because I believe it's still the best choice for developing native applications (not just embedded software). This conveys a lot about my sentiments towards other languages, including C++, C#, Rust etc. New is not always better.

This is an incredibly cool project. It gives access to all of iOS and macOS APIs in plain C. No need to learn Ojective-C or Swift to develop a native App! @FelixK_15 has done an amazing job!
