Why is Trump hostile toward left-wing authoritarian states (Venezuela and Cuba) and affable towards right-wing authoritarian states (Russia)?
My latest article in @The_JOP with @JoshuaASchwartz introduces a new IR theory: The Left-Wing Peace & The Right-Wing Peace.
Why do US enemies see the United States as a “paper tiger” that looks strong but is highly vulnerable?
In this new article in Security Studies, co-authored with @HelfontSamuel, we use Iraqi archives to understand why Saddam Hussein underestimated U.S. resolve, and draw lessons for future potential adversaries like China.

Did UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham achieve a balance between pursuing national interests and maintaining a healthy relationship with the United States?
Dominic Tierney details how London created a coalition of states introducing (or considering) sanctions against Israeli settlements without antagonizing the United States. US officials declined to criticize the sanctions decision as the UK kept its partner informed of the plans ahead of time. buff.ly/QP4NP0V

The Burnham doctrine will likely face stiff challenges at home and abroad. Burnham prefers to dodge difficult trade-offs and promise a win-win: investment in defense will reduce inequality and level up Britain. But given budget deficits, more money for defense means less money for social spending. buff.ly/QP4NP0V

Senior Fellow @DomTierney outlines the changes to UK foreign policy under Prime Minister Andy Burnham, highlighting prominent attempts to balance British values and the need for hard power.
His principles of foreign and domestic policy being inextricably linked, touting British values while upholding US and European partnerships, and focusing on middle power coalitions are reshaping the UK's position on the world stage, though they bear practical tensions.

The second issue of the relaunched #OrbisJournal is out!
Take a look at the second issue of the #OrbisJournal, focusing on the second nuclear century. The authors' contributions each explore a critical element of the nuclear domain shaping the international system.
Their perspectives vary: they affirm that there are major changes afoot that will shape the future of international politics, but do not necessarily agree on the sources of the emerging challenges and where potential solutions might lie. Nevertheless, their pieces contribute to a debate over just how problematic the coming nuclear landscape might be.
A special thanks to Rachel Whitlark for all her hard work spearheading this issue. @NunnSchoolGT buff.ly/iso1dit
