This is literally us in @ea_ctl.
Indy school, so different. We’re really fortunate. But it really does make a difference.
Things lag. But learning is a lagging metric. At every age.

ALL school districts need to embrace the one or two really nerdy teachers that read 50 educational books a year or listen to podcasts on a daily or weekly basis. The ones with really good outcomes with their students year after year. I've heard too many stories from teachers on here that they are basically deemed the "difficult" teacher or are just sidelined in their district. Not all schools/districts do this, but far too many. This is a call to admin. It is perfectly fine if a teacher knows far more than you. Listen to them. Learn from them. Appreciate them. Put them in positions to help improve your district. Admin that do this are truly the best. It is about the kids. That is what we are all here for.

Good things happen when you get a room full of talented teachers, coaches, artists, and leaders into a room to talk about students.

New school year? Don't wait to start talking with your students about effective learning strategies.
Here's how I start that conversation:

Creative work can feel risky before it feels rewarding.
@drmarcbrackett and @ZoranaPsych talk about what students need in the messy middle of creativity, and why “I’m not creative” may be telling us more than we think.

Same test, twice. Once alone, once together. Nearly ten years in, I finally measured if it mattered.
Maybe some residue lingers longer when the thinking is shared?

Thanks Justin. Glad it's still proving useful!
Roughly once a year I remember how good this book is from @dylanwiliam and wind up going back to read the whole thing. (Lots of dog ears, even more annotations.)

Good to see @DTWillingham getting lots of shares on here currently. To that end, I really liked his new Education Next piece with ED Hirsch today, on knowledge and reading.

Me, when Carl links to a paper reviewing SoTL research in his Monthly Dispatch (top 3 resource for me).
*Note: The paper is critical of SoTL methodologies as they relate to teacher "charisma" which is something we constantly grapple with in @ea_ctl (while doing SoTL research).

Teacher-led research is easy to advocate for, harder to do. Watching educators investigate assumptions, learn from failure, and grow as practitioners (mirroring the 🔗 paper) has been powerful. We’re now scaling this work elsewhere—with more coming soon.

I appreciate Justin Cerenzia's emphasis on focused application of what we already know. Rather than accumulating more Science of Learning theory, he advocates for teacher-led classroom investigations—small, systematic inquiries that generate practical insights. His CTL Scholars initiative at Episcopal Academy makes this accessible, transforming professional development into real practice-based learning.

Teaching’s Moneyball moment is here: small data, clear sightlines, teacher-led inquiry.
We’re building the architecture for it in @ea_ctl.

Students instantly saw themselves in the book’s ideas, even admitting they’ve been “guilty” of being deceived in their own learning.
*Note: this group volunteers and gives up multiple free periods. Talk to your students about learning. It pays dividends in the long run.

We’re in the early stages (Initial View’s founder Terry Crawford was just on campus this week) but I’m enthusiastic about the potential here, having completed a number of Vivas with my own writing (like my Masters thesis from 15 years ago).
Longer piece coming this week.

And b/c we want to navigate how we might teach & learn in this AI era, we’re partnering with them on what’s next: Viva—which turns student writing into a real-time oral exam at scale powered by LLMs.
Already used at Caltech in admissions we’re exploring its classroom potential.

I love when my colleagues do good work & make that work public. That’s been happening more frequently via @substack. Here’s my @ea_ctl colleague @SrShimrock doing so w/ a healthy dose of inspiration from @RobertTalbert’s Grading for Growth work.

I'm taking a deep dive into the (potential) benefits of 2-stage testing. I'm sharing the following slides with students today. I need to write this up, but I'm excited about what we've learned so far.
(Small sample size, blah blah. We'll do it all year.)
We are cooking with this @ea_ctl scholars project on two-stage assessment, right out of the gates. 👀
