I have introduced a bill to introduce compulsory labelling of halal and kosher meat. Consumers have a right to know what they are eating. Yet every day people are consuming halal and kosher meat without knowing it - that’s meat where the animal has its throat slit and often is not stunned before slaughter. At its heart, this is a straightforward proposal built on consumer choice, animal welfare and transparency. It is not about banning halal or kosher meat but about the compulsory labelling of it, which is currently only voluntary, so as to ensure consumers know what they are buying. What began as a limited religious exemption has become an increasingly significant part of meat production.

Deeply grateful to Syria for their courageous leadership in providing military assistance to the people of Yemen and Saudi Arabia in their fight against radical Houthi terrorists. Syria has been freed from Iran and will soon help to free Yemen from Iran. All of the peoples of the region must work against Iran and its puppets!

If @KemiBadenoch was on the left, we would be inundated by broadcasters with profiles of her courage and character in overcoming racist barriers. But she's not so we aren't. Instead we can simply admire her as a human being. "It’s this self-assured demeanour that many mistake for arrogance, or in some cases aggression. That, combined with her quick-wittedness and sharp tongue, makes her a formidable opponent, as we have seen time and again at the despatch box. The slightest chink in an opponent’s armour, and she strikes with deadly precision."

C2C, which serves my constituency, has consistently been one of the top-performing rail lines in Britain, topping customer satisfaction polls. That's why Labour chose it as one of the first to be nationalised - they thought it would make nationalisation look good. Before nationalisation, 94% of trains were on time. Now it's 71.5%. I joined a cross-party group of local MPs this week to raise the alarm - but these were fears I set out before nationalisation. Labour needs to demonstrate to my constituents why their approach is an improvement, not simply a recipe for decline. thetimes.com/uk/transport/ar…

It was an honour to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph this morning. This Sunday we remember all those who never came home, the families who never stopped waiting and we pay tribute to all those who wear the uniform today.

Mélenchon openly advocates states of emergency allowing government to bypass Parliament. His programme is authoritarian, yet many people seem not to hear the lyrics behind the tune. As always @DominiqueReynie is 🎯

London Assembly member @Councillorsuzie shuts down Green Party leader Zack Polanski after his party voted to classify Zionism as racism and rejected an amendment protecting Jewish members who attend synagogues. The London Assembly voted 19 to 3 this week to condemn the Green Party's decision. Polanski was one of the three who voted against. Susan, you dropped this 👑

Who decides what gets built in your town? Not your elected councillor anymore. ❌ Labour's new planning rules make officer decisions the default and strip councillors of the power to call in applications. Committee meetings are already being cancelled. Speeding up development by silencing local voices isn't reform. It's less democracy.
Planning meetings are already being cancelled across the country. Labour's new rules mean your councillor can no longer call in planning applications for you, and decisions on what gets built near you are handed to officials. Local planning should be decided by the councillors you elect.

Two more protesters detained during Iran's January unrest have been sentenced to death in a case linked to demonstrations in Shandiz, near Mashhad, bringing the number of identified prisoners facing execution to six. The Human Rights Activists News Agency reported Saturday that Ali Zaghi and Ilya Akbari were sentenced by Branch Five of Mashhad's Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Hossein Yazdankhah. The six defendants face charges including "waging war against God" (moharebeh) through alleged destruction of public property and setting fire to religious sites, as well as conspiracy against national security. HRANA said the death sentences of Mehdi Zarif and Hossein Rasouli Nasab have been upheld, while those of Zaghi, Akbari, Matin Shabani and Hassan Golshan-Nejad remain at the initial court stage. All six are held at Mashhad's Vakilabad prison. The case stems from January protests in Shandiz, during which a mosque and a Quran education center were set on fire. iranintl.com/en/202611077917

A one-way ticket to the past. Nationalised rail services are poorer than when they were private. This is what happens when Labour politicians try to run things.
🚨 NEW: Labour MPs have summoned c2c rail bosses to explain the worsening train delays following nationalisation Since being nationalised, the proportion of trains arriving on time has plummeted from 94% to just 71.5% [@thetimes]

130 days… still no sign of any businesses registering as working for the Chinese Communist Party. Perhaps that explains why the Government still hasn’t published the Foreign Influence Registration Scheme report…
The first annual report into the Foreign Influence Registration Scheme was due 129 days ago. This is not optional - it is required by primary legislation. Why are we still waiting? What does the Govt have to hide?

Again, we Iranians woke up this morning to horrifying news: The Islamic Republic has hanged three more innocent protesters. Shocking that how hanging human beings for speaking, for demanding Freedom has become the Islamic Republic’s new normal. Worse, the world seems to be getting used to it. Today, Hassan Dioband, Hamid Kazemi, and Reza Zanganeh were executed over January’s protests. Three lives taken. Three families shattered. Stop normalizing executions in Iran. #StopExecutionsInIran

I believe the leader of the Conservative Party could be the most consequential political leader in 40 years. Our country faces serious problems at home and abroad. Our politics refuses to accept the medicine needed to treat the problem. We need someone with extraordinary zeal, personal drive and a fierce will to get Britain back on track… much like we did in 1979. And that ended up rather well.

The Times's weekend read: * Forget the 10-year plan. Forget the Budget. Forget the everyday fixes. The only question that matters in government right now is what Donald Trump does next on Iran * John Healey, the Chancellor, told colleagues this week that the end of the conflict would be the 'single biggest economic benefit' possible for Britain * He was not underselling it. We are at a clear fork in the road * In one direction lies a world of pain. Inflation rising to 6.2% in Q3 2027. Energy bills heading well north of £2,000. Rising prices at the pump, rising mortgage rates and above all a 'catastrophic' fall in living standards * The other path offers a much brighter prospect. Inflation falling to 2.25% next year. Lower borrowing costs. Higher growth. The decline in living standards 'largely reversed'. It is the kind of shift in economic fortunes that Chancellors can only dream of * What Trump does next is hugely consequential for Britain. But senior government figures acknowledge we have little influence * The optimists in government see Vance's extraordinary Tweet as an attempt to get ahead of the formal climbdown by Trump. The pessimists think he intervened because Trump wasn't moving and is poised to announce another military intervention * But the fact is they don't know. Nobody in British politics does. Trump is an extraordinary capricious president at the best of times. He is backed into a corner. What he does next is anyone's guess. * So what does a prime minister so constrained by the state of the public finances and decisions being made by a man in the White House 3,600 miles away actually do? * Enter Burnham's 10 year plan, which as @HugoGye revealed has already slipped into the New Year. Why is it delayed? The reason is actually pretty simple. They thought if they did it in the run-up to Christmas people wouldn't be listening. Far better to do it at the start of the year. Which is probably right * Burnham feels people are already underestimating the importance of the plan. 'We have to think big in this moment,' he told No 10 staffers. 'The big vision for where the country is going.' The plan, he said, was about getting the buy-in of the electorate * It will be broad brush with three themes, as @benrileysmith revealed - growing up, getting on and growing old - and policies in each area. Education, energy, public control. It is trying to put flesh on Burnham's until now fairly abstract vision * Behind the scenes there is a hive of activity. @benclatworthy reveals that the Boston Consulting Group - a giant US management consultancy - have been drafted in. This is not without controversy. It was involved in the plan for a 'Trump Riviera' in the Gaza Strip * But one person working on the plan said that translating Burnham's broad political philosophy into tangible pledges with timelines is proving challenging. They say that Burnham has set out the direction of his government but not the destination * 'There are a number of issues, like what exactly does ‘public control’ of utilities mean in practice, and how do you achieve that? Likewise Brexit and social care. If it is a ten-year plan, people want to know exactly what the end point is but he has deliberately not set that out. It is a bit like trying to cut your way through a rainforest' Read it here: thetimes.com/uk/politics/art… And listen here on our podcast The State of It with @benrileysmith and @lara_spirit youtu.be/0tQKXqhf_aI?si=8P-G…
