[NEW VIDEO] Meet the translator behind Christopher Nolan's Odyssey
Emily Wilson has been vilified and lied about on social media for the last two months. In fact, the last 9 years
She was my former professor of ancient Greek at Penn. So, naturally, I wanted to talk with her about translating the Odyssey and being a public scholar
Our conversation covers the gods and heroes of the Odyssey, as well as topics of slavery, feminism, vegetarianism, and carnivory. We dive into various approaches to poetry and translation and the reception of Greek myth. And of course we touch on the new movie
It's a great conversation, and I hope it humanizes her and debunks many of the lies about her
Watch it now!

When George Washington was inaugurated in 1789, he wore a relatively plain brown frock coat. To the modern eye, the garment may look fancy, but it was relatively constrained for a man of Washington's position.
Affluent Americans at the time tended to wear European fabrics, as centuries of textile tradition on that side of the Atlantic meant that their materials were finer, silkier, and more luxurious. Those who could afford to wear such materials often did, not just because they were more comfortable, but because they signaled status.
Washington rejected this convention for his inauguration, opting instead for a plain brown frock coat made from an American-made material, specifically one produced by a relatively new upstart in Connecticut. It's also notable that his outfit for that day was considerably more restrained than those of leaders in other Western nations.
For instance, check out this outfit on George III (slide one). In this 1762 coronation painting, we can see the British monarch wearing a gold damask coat with a velvet mantle lined and edged with ermine and trimmed in gold. Even his shoes featured solid gold buckles.
Washington opted for something simpler because he wanted to send two political messages. First, he wanted to support domestic industry (hence his request that the garment be made from American woolen broadcloth).
Second, he understood that the US was supposed to be a democratic republic, not a monarchy. Back in Europe, monarchs wore fancy ceremonial attire to reinforce their position in society. Washington, by contrast, chose something more restrained, signaling that he was not governing through divine right but rather through consent of the people.
Irish-born architect James Holban also understood this when he designed the White House in the Neoclassical style, drawing from Georgian and Palladian architecture. Neoclassicism was a rejection of Rococo, which had been fashionable among European monarchs and aristocrats in the preceding decades.
Most people will know Rococo from the photos of the lavish French palaces erected during the reign of Louis XV. Much like the elaborate ceremonial attire of European monarchs, these interiors were meant to impress upon people the wealth and power of European leaders. The visual grandeur reinforced the idea that these people fundamentally occupied a different social station from those they governed.
To be sure, the White House was much nicer than what ordinary Americans at the time would have occupied. But much like Washington's inauguration outfit, Hoban's design was meant to balance the dignity of the office with the republican ideal that political authority ultimately comes from the people. Our leaders are not above us; they are here to serve us.
That is why the White House was decorated in this relatively restrained way for almost 250 years, changing only recently. I have seen some on here suggest that glorifying the White House is meant to glorify the state, and thus the citizens. But this logic was historically used by dictators abroad, not US presidents.

Community Notes will fail on every politically contentious issue where timing matters. I run an AI note writer. This is going to happen in the US next week.

Folks, Brazil is the perfect example of what I’ve said about this platform and Community Notes since Elon launched it.
Tonight and all day tomorrow, your feed will fill with thousands of posts claiming the Brazil election was stolen because Lula’s buddy on the Supreme Court extended voting by 2 hours.
That claim, we already know, is absolute bullshit.
Both campaigns asked for the extension, Flávio Bolsonaro’s included, after bus shortages and bad weather hit voters in several cities.
xitter.cf/tommysantos14/status/2…
Almost every one of those posts will run note-free. The few that get a Community Note will get it after the damage is done.
MAGA propaganda spreads like wildfire here for one reason: Elon Musk designed it that way. Community Notes has always been a red herring.
Give it a few hours. Musk will repost one of his favorite stooges with a one-word “Concerning,” and that lie will land in front of his 241 million followers.
And Community Notes will never catch up.
So when I call Elon Musk Trump’s Joseph Goebbels, I mean every word.

Tribal attack is the INEVITABLE result of any heritage professional trying to engage with the points made by pseudoarchaeologists. Just Google the name Flint Dibble to see what accusations have been flung at him for facing @Graham__Hancock in open debate (youtu.be/-DL1_EMIw6w?si=JuVl…)
Can’t we all just get along? Are you serious?
These are just two examples of the uncouth and slanderous posts that I have received from @DeDunkingPast and there are plenty more. Also, ask around! Do you have no qualms platforming such an abhorrent individual? Not a good look!

The GRU hacked into Jared Kushner's iPhone. Dutch military intelligence (MIVD) then recruited a GRU spy who gave them access to the hacked phone. What MIVD discovered was that Kushner had access to two bank accounts --one Azerbaijani, the other Israeli --where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Emirati ruler Mohammed bin Zayed deposited money. It sounds like a slightly far-fetched episode of "Slow Horses," but it's real. And it proves just how eye-poppingly corrupt this administration was and continues to be as its "special envoy" decides the fate of tens of millions in Europe in the Middle East. Simply incredible reporting by Matthew Cole, drawn from his new book on Kushner. vanityfair.com/story/jared-k…

Claims that no new T-pillars have been excavated at Göbeklitepe since 2017 are simply incorrect. Several more were excavated this year alone and are already visible from the visitor walkway.
But T-pillars are not the be-all and end-all of Göbeklitepe. The ongoing excavations reveal much more about the settlement, its architecture and the lives of the people who built it. The results will be published in due course.
In the meantime, here is a picture of the excavation cat family. 🐈

A new study identifies "a statistically significant doubling of the global warming rate during 2011–25 (0.40 °C per decade) compared to 1971–2025 (0.20 °C per decade)."
It claims that "the ensemble mean of 26 climate models fails to capture the observed doubling of the warming."

Dots.
Lines.
Patterns.
Book sales.
Graham Hancock and Randall Carlson think they’ve connected the dots on Atlantis in the Azores. The problem?
The dots are real. The lines are not.
I went through the geology, the Younger Dryas, flood myths, the Azores, Taş Tepeler, “quackademics,” and the claim that archaeology is suppressing the truth.
And somehow, after all that…they still haven’t found Atlantis.

Hard to believe this, really. Apparently, zero grants for archaeology and bioanth projects were awarded by the NSF in 2026. The USA's long-standing leading position in these fields won't survive many years of no NSF research grants.

Oh sure 😁
Tell that to your colleague Andrew Jones before lying about me getting things wrong
The “Grumpy archeologist” should change his name to “Lazy archeologist” as he didn’t even get the dimensions correct.
The Durupinar Formation is 85 feet wide (approx 50 Egyptian cubits) in addition to being 515 feet long (300 cubits).
It’s the most basic argument and proves he didn’t do his homework.
It’s obvious he’s just regurgitating talking points and saying them on air.
Saying “geologists debunked it!” From decades ago Is lazy and proves nothing.
