More from the Great Blue Heron that caught a baby alligator. These herons eat mostly fish, but they will take almost any animal they can swallow. #birding
Tricolored Heron stalking slowly through the marsh. Its slate-blue body, white stripe down the neck and reddish-purple plumes at the base of the neck are the three colors that give it its name. #birding
Limpkin probing the mud with its long bill. Apple snails are its main food, and its bill is shaped for pulling them out of their shells. #birding
Purple Gallinule at the Orlando Wetlands. Its long toes spread its weight, so it can walk across lily pads and floating plants without sinking. #birding
A Merlin, a small falcon that winters in Florida and hunts other birds in fast, low flights. An Osprey with a fish, which makes up almost its entire diet. And a Bald Eagle overhead. Florida's eagles begin nesting in the fall, so now is a good time to watch for them. #birding
Male Northern Cardinal among sunlit leaves. That red comes from carotenoids in what he eats, so the brighter the bird, the better he's been eating. #birding
Reddish Egret mid-hunt. They spread their wings like this to shade the water, which cuts the glare and may draw fish into the shadow. It looks like a performance, but it's just lunch. #birding

Great Blue Heron heading off with a baby alligator. Herons will eat almost anything they can swallow, and in Florida that occasionally includes small gators. Not something you expect to see on a morning walk. #birding
Anhinga taking a break between dives. Their feathers aren't waterproof, which helps them swim low and hunt underwater, but it means a lot of time spent perched and drying off afterward. #birding
Went out a couple of weeks ago to get some photos of the fall migration. This Swainson's Thrush passing through was one of my favorite photos from the morning.
Eastern Phoebe holding down his post in the rain like it's a job. Tail pumping, totally unbothered. Meanwhile I was the one getting soaked. #birding

Oops! I accidentally took a picture of the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies while watching the meteor shower.
Today, I got to meet two legends from the final Space Shuttle mission, STS-135!
On the left: Commander Christopher Ferguson. On the right: Mission Specialist Rex Walheim. Standing in front of Atlantis, the orbiter that flew that historic last flight in 2011.
The Space Shuttle era may be over, but the inspiration lives on.

Why is it ‘cancelled’ in the U.K. but ‘canceled’ in the U.S.?
Because we gave them that L in 1776.
