Bit of a hectic November coming up. I'm heading out to sea again onboard a warship, now, I've done a fair few embarks over the years but it's always good to do another one or two, and this should be a good chance to see some hard-to-watch warfare from the deck of a ship, which is very cool, though I can't say much more yet. Then it's straight on to an aircraft carrier for two big events for discussions on where naval power goes next, with a lot of very senior people from across the Alliance in the room, also very cool. Then a few days at home to relax and have a few beers, and then I'm off to Turkey for NATO Edge in Izmir. It's run by the NATO Communications and Information Agency and it's essentially where NATO sits down with industry to work out what tech it actually needs and how to get it into service faster. AI, cloud, cyber defence, command and control. Over 2,000 people and around 200 companies, and SACT Admiral Vandier is among those opening it, again, cool. Should be a good few weeks for the UK Defence Journal. If you're going to any of these, give me a shout.

🚨EXCLUSIVE🚨This has been an incredibly long and painstaking piece of work, led by @GazTheJourno who spent months looking at maps, an ungodly number of digital tracking data websites and plotting where various Russian ships had been and how that corresponds to the network of undersea cables. It’s also one of the last stories I played a part in during my time at @Telegraph. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

This is remarkable. This type of journalism is vital in open societies to help develop an understanding of what attribution looks like and what’s needed to ensure it’s applied to create political costs. Bravo to the team.

Good to see the UK Defence Journal cited during a Defence Committee evidence session. Our coverage was based on a fairly routine announcement from the defence company that had secured the work. It shows, though, why reporting on industry activity matters and how it can feed into wider debates on national security. Plus, for our small (but growing) team, it's still pretty cool to hear our publication mentioned by name in sessions like this. A nice reminder that our work is having an impact on the defence conversation.

New - Counter Terrorism Policing has re-arrested two men over last month's RAF Fairford incident on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service. Police have named Iran as the country the investigation relates to, and say they consider Iranian state involvement highly likely.

Footage from the scrapyard fire that's burned in Glasgow overnight shows emergency crews are reducing their presence. Significant amounts of smoke continue to billow from the site. Residents are being told to keep their windows and doors closed, while those driving through the smoke are being asked to do so with their air conditioning off and air vents closed. People in Glasgow's Whiteinch area have reported hearing explosions after a scrapyard went on fire last night. Emergency crews were called to the site on South Street at around 11.23pm. They're still tackling the blaze this morning. No one's been hurt but nearby residents are being told to keep their windows and doors closed. Anyone driving through smoke is being asked to keep their air conditioning off and air vents closed.

For years, we've rightly focused on the military and political threat posed by Putin's Russia. But there's another cost that receives far less attention. A hidden cost paid by British taxpayers, businesses and public services. It's called the Putin Tax. 🧵
