Yesterday, our office hosted a discussion on how wealth inequality is reshaping life in New York and around the world.
Thank you, @nycmayor, Gabriel Zucman, and Joseph Stiglitz for a great and timely conversation.

One month ago, I sat down with President Lula to discuss how government serving poor and working people. Weeks later, Brazil took a historic step: a 40-hour workweek, at least two days off and no cuts to pay for more than 30 million workers.
Workers fought for decades to win the five-day workweek in America. Brazilian workers have fought for this victory, too. I congratulate them on this achievement.
Working people deserve time to live, not just work. Building a better future means giving people more of their lives back. And we’ll keep fighting for it.

Mayor Mamdani handed out some tenant organizing fliers in Urdu last week, with a famous early 1940s Faiz Ahmed Faiz poem on the back.
“Speak, for your lips are still free.
Speak, for truth is still alive.
Speak, say whatever you have to say!”

While Wall Street executives rake in nearly $1,800 an hour, home-based child care providers earn a median wage of just $6. That isn't a reflection of the value of their work. It's a reflection of an economy that has never valued care the way it values wealth.
It was an honor to visit Xiomara Family Day Care in the Bronx and sit down with extraordinary home-based educators as part of our administration's listening tour with family child care providers.
Together, we will build a universal child care system that works — for families and educators alike.

Today marks 250 years since a small group of newspaper editors, farmers, and soldiers signed a document declaring our nation’s independence — a truth that feels self-evident now but was revolutionary then.
What a privilege us Americans have, to live in a nation that every one of its inhabitants can shape. What an honor us New Yorkers have, to look out over our city’s waters from the shores where so many Americans bravely entered their country for the first time.
Today and all days, let us remember that patriotism is not pretending our nation is without flaws. Patriotism is every act of righteous dissent — because loving our country means fighting for the best version of it.
Happy Fourth of July, New York City.

I am heartbroken by the death of Tibetan activist Lobga Rangzen outside the United Nations. No one should feel that such a desperate act is the only way to make the world listen.
New York stands for the dignity and human rights of all people. We mourn this tragic loss and extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones and the Tibetan community across our City.

As temperatures continue to rise across our city, protecting older New Yorkers is one of our highest priorities. I spent this morning at the Carter Burden Covello Older Adult Center communing with older New Yorkers and sharing simple ways to stay safe during this dangerous heat wave.
It was a powerful reminder that cooling centers aren't just places to escape the heat — they're places where New Yorkers can come together, stay safe, and look out for one another during dangerous weather.
As this heat wave continues, let's make sure older New Yorkers have the support they need to stay safe. If you or someone around you is experiencing trouble breathing, a rapid heartbeat, dizziness, nausea, confusion, or other signs of heat illness, call 911 immediately.
Staying cool saves lives. Cooling centers are open across the five boroughs.

BREAKING: Mayor Zohran Mamdani shared an emotional story about fearing his own father could be detained during a U.S. citizenship interview.
“I was terrified,” Mamdani said. “I remember sitting across from 26 Federal Plaza… ready to file a case if something happened to my father.”
He said the experience gave him “a little glimpse” of what families feel when they hug a loved one without knowing when they’ll be able to hug them again.
No family should have to live with that kind of uncertainty. Whatever your views on immigration policy, fear should never define a family’s future.

It is often said that soccer is more than a game. That truth was evident as I joined residents at the Bruckner Boulevard shelter in the Bronx to watch Senegal take on France in the World Cup.
In the United States, the culture of soccer has long been carried by immigrants — people who have brought their clubs, traditions, and love of the game with them from around the world. Many of the residents at Bruckner know what it means to leave one home behind while seeking refuge in another, and the immense challenges that journey can bring.
For just a few hours, the match offered something more than entertainment. It offered humanity, reprieve, and a momentary break from hardship. Most importantly, it offered community. For so many people around the world, that is what makes soccer the beautiful game.
