We seem to have forgotten that one of the foundational purposes of modern universal education is to inculcate the students with the “culture of school.” You’re not supposed to be “culturally responsive” — you’re supposed to show students “this is the way things work, now”
My dad was a teacher, one year the administration brought in a diversity expert who told them Hispanic boys don’t respect female authority so they should take any rudeness in stride. My dad was like “well too bad, they’re going to learn” & female staff rushed to thank him after

The economically devastated Rust Belt resident asked God, “I had faith in you, but you didn’t save us. You let our town die. Why?” To this God replied, “I sent you three data-center proposals. What more did you expect?”
This is the main street of Monroeville in Huron County, Ohio. The town voted against building a $1 billion data center nearby. Let’s just be honest here, does this town look like it’s doing well enough to reject a $1 billion opportunity for economic development? How are you supposed to fix cost of living when people vote against $1 billion opportunities for jobs and economic development? NIMBYism is killing the West. The same people who hate data centres hate nuclear energy and hate new factories for manufacturing and reindustrialisation. Literally what are you supposed to do? People want 5% GDP growth a year with 0 inflation and then you try to give them new industry and they reject it. Foreign backed information war on the American people has done massive damage to America. People voted against their own jobs and their own economic development because they watched a TikTok saying Donald Trump and Epstein ate Jon Benet Ramsay inside a data center or something.

From the beginning this has been a state capacity story -- people are willing to trust their government when it exhibits competence and urgency to meet their needs. When it doesn't, the only available tool is opposition/obstruction. That's why YIMBYs are obsessed with improving the functioning of government in addition to removing needless regulation.
Kelly Park in Midwood recently renovated its playground. But they messed up the drainage, and now when the sprinklers are on in the summer, water flows everywhere. Why should we be confident in the Parks Department’s renovation of Tompkins Square?

I didn’t say he was “neutral,” I said he did not direct DSCC/SMP money to Stevens as the OP claimed. (The claim was that he wasted $10 million of money that could have gone to Nixon on Stevens, which isn’t true.) “Chuck Schumer prefers this candidate” was a drag in the primaries; Stevens made the choice to be the “yay go team DC, AIPAC help me out please” candidate while El-Sayed ran against the establishment that had just lost to Trump again. Nobody disputes that Schumer wanted Stevens; I’m also saying, his bet on her was stupid. (She’s a bad candidate and the idea that AIPAC would have floated her after the primary looks dicey now.) semafor.com/article/08/06/20…
Absolute mendacity from Weigel. Janet Mills, Angie Craig, Haley Stevens & Alex Vindman all had the backing of the same Senate leadership that smeared Mamdani as a jihadist. The notion Schumer was some neutral party in these proceedings is laughable

The story keeps getting crazier. To recap everything that has been reported so far: - The US intelligence community discovered that Jensen Huang, the CEO of the largest company in the world, was sleeping with Alice Huang, a Chinese spy and an executive at Megaspeed. (FT) - Multiple independent investigations have concluded that Megaspeed is likely a Chinese cutout, which helps Chinese companies access AI chips or circumvent export controls. (NYT and Bloomberg) - The US intelligence community also concluded that Alice Huang’s goal was to convince Jensen to lobby the U.S. government to loosen export controls on advanced AI chips. (NYT) - The intelligence community relayed this information to “a small group of top US government officials” earlier this year. (FT) - Over the last year, Jensen Huang has repeatedly lobbied the U.S. government to loosen export controls on advanced chips. @BISgov has done so, not only by permitting the export of H200 chips to China, but also not enforcing export controls that would have required a license for exports of the most advanced Blackwell chips to Megaspeed and Southeast Asia. - Although @CommerceGov leadership was presumably briefed on this information by the U.S. intelligence community, @BISgov has taken no actions to tighten controls on Megaspeed or Southeast Asia. - Megaspeed remains a preferred cloud partner of Nvidia, and continues to receive Nvidia Blackwell chips despite employing a Chinese spy who reportedly is romantically engaged with the CEO of Nvidia. - Tens of billions of dollars worth of AI chips have been exported to Southeast Asia this year alone, and Malaysia and Singapore are now two of the four largest importers of AI chips in the world. What is going on here??? We need answers. The question of who gets the most advanced AI chips in the world is literally the defining strategic question of our time. And not only does it seem like the MSS may be directly influencing the debate on export controls in the United States, but also @CommerceGov is refusing to listen to the warnings of the IC on this issue. What is a POSSIBLE good explanation for why Megaspeed is still receiving chips? Why is there not a license requirement for AI chip shipments to all of Southeast Asia? This is beyond strange at this point. The fallout from this story will be massive. Obviously, the motivations underpinning Nvidia’s policy views opposing export controls must now all be questioned. But also, how did @BISgov sit on this information and has still taken no actions? We need answers.

But if you want to understand how these candidates differed from Kamala Harris it’s not that she forgot to do economic populism — her best ads were about taking on price gouging and abusive landlords — it’s that they did what she wouldn’t do on topics like immigration.

Most of the impressive 2026 senate winners seek to believe in the complement theory, staking out positions on certain issues that are more conservative than the views of any incumbent Democratic Party senator. If progressives like these guys, great!

The whole actual debate about “economic populism” in the Democratic Party is whether it’s a substitute for or a complement to moderation on cultural issues, and the endless post-election posting about this from the left keeps not engaging with the issue.

I've seen versions of this cope and they all ignore how many seats Dems started with. The "smart take" was that it would be hard for them to crack 230 bc they had so many swing seats already - Rs entered the cycle with just two members in districts won by Kamala. The biggest GOP House majority since the New Deal was the 2014 majority of 247 seats. Dems have already zoomed past that. And their big New Deal era majorities relied on Solid South conservatives who were replaced by Rs long ago. A majority of this size, where the most conservative member is Henry Cuellar (a pro-life Hispanic who's otherwise a normal liberal), is brand new.
Clinton lost 54 seats in the 1994 midterm election. Obama lost 63 seats in the 2010 midterm election. Trump just lost 41 seats in the 2026 midterm election. It’s not exactly the historic event you believe it to be.

pro tip: if you want the DSCC to invest in more races, don’t get mad when they take big donor checks. “the dscc should have put more in florida and south carolina” and “we have to ban corporate and billionaire donors” are two completely irreconcilable positions
Final spending figures from Senate Majority PAC (D) and its affiliates: Iowa: $67 million Ohio: $150 million Maine: $65 million Michigan: $67 million Texas: $40 million Kansas: $14 million South Carolina: $750,000 Mississippi: $2.2 million

Scott Colom was recruited by Schumer, won his election, and Schumer's last minute ad buy in MS was probably decisive given how narrow the margin was.
Chuck Schumer saw 4 Black Senate candidates closing in on historic Southern upsets—Nixon in FL, Davis in LA, Wess in AL, and Colom in MS—and starved every single campaign. Left 4 Senate seats on the table because his playbook is from 1980.

talarico is a populist who talks about politics as up vs down instead of left vs right, but he also says nice things about famous business people in texas (even elon musk!), bernie sanders doesn't really ever talk this way except maybe about the ben in ben and jerry's
James Talarico jokes that Mark Cuban is one of the good billionaires, using his wealth to fix systems, not just give to charity “And I joked that Mark Cuban is one of the good ones, meaning Mark Cuban uses his wealth, his power, his influence to help working people.” “If you've seen the work he's done on prescription drugs, Cost Plus Drugs is a great company that is actively making it easier for people to afford their medicine.” “Charity is important, but what's more important is addressing the systems that make charity necessary.” “And that's exactly what people like Mark Cuban are doing.” w/ @jamestalarico
