Today we pause to say thank you to the people who show up when everything feels like it’s falling apart. The ones who leave dinner on the table, kiss their kids goodbye, and walk into the unknown so the rest of us can stay safe. Firefighters, police officers, EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, and every other first responder who answers the call—this day is for you. We see the long shifts, the missed holidays, the quiet weight you carry home. We see the partners and kids who worry until you’re back through the door. Most of all, we see the courage it takes to run toward what everyone else is running from. To every first responder and the families who stand behind them: thank you. Not just today, but every day. You make our communities feel a little safer, a little kinder, and a lot more cared for. We’re grateful for you.

In Remembrance of Beirut #OTD in 1983, a terrorist bombing at the Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, claimed the lives of 241 U.S. service members, including 220 Marines, serving as part of the Multinational Force in Lebanon. On October 23, a suicide bomber drove a truck laden with explosives into the barracks where U.S. Marines were stationed on a peacekeeping mission. The attack devastated the building and became one of the deadliest days in Marine Corps History. The Marines in Beirut were deployed to help restore peace and stability amid escalating violence in Lebanon. Despite the dangers they faced, they carried out their mission with courage, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to one another. The Beirut bombing left a lasting mark on the #MarineCorps and the nation. We remember the lost lives, honor the wounded and survivors, and recognize the families and loved ones who continue to carry the weight of that day. Their sacrifice remains woven into the legacy of every #Marine who has answered the call to serve. Today, we pause to remember the 241 American service members who never made it home and honor their courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty. They came in peace. They will never be forgotten. ISAIAS GROWING STRONGER: This morning Hurricane Isaias is packing sustained winds of 80 mph; the center is about 420 miles south/southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River. It is moving to the east/northeast at 9 mph. A Hurricane Warning is in now effect from Ocean Springs, MS to the Bay/Gulf County Line, FL. This includes all of the Alabama coast. Landfall is forecast near Perdido Key late tomorrow night; winds will be in the 90-100 mph range. Here are the key messages... *Isaias is expected to remain a dangerous hurricane through landfall, and gusty winds are expected well inland after landfall given the anticipated expansion of the wind field and accelerating forward speed of the storm. Long-duration power outages are possible along the coast, the Florida Panhandle, and South Alabama. *A 5-7 foot storm surge is forecast from Ocean Springs, MS to Indian Pass, FL, including Mobile Bay. Highest surge will be east of the storm center across the Florida Panhandle coast. Surge-related flooding depends on the relative timing of the surge and the tidal cycle, and can vary greatly over short distances. *The cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are encouraging all non‑residents, and residents living in low-lying, flood prone areas to voluntarily evacuate. City officials urge all individuals who are not permanent residents to leave the area immediately and relocate to a safer location. Departing now will help reduce congestion, support emergency operations, and ensure the safety of those who may be most vulnerable during the storm. *Gradient winds across inland Alabama will gust to 40/50 mph at times Saturday morning. Winds will diminish Saturday afternoon as Isaias accelerates northward. *Rain amounts on the coast will be in the 5-8 inch range for most places. For inland Alabama, average amounts will be 2-3 inches, with isolated amounts to 4". *Isolated tornadoes are possible along and east of the track. The risk Friday night is from Baldwin and Escambia counties east to Dothan in Alabama, and the western Florida Panhandle. On Saturday, a few tornadoes are possible over the eastern half of Alabama. The tornado threat over the western half of the state is very low. *The most widespread rain will likely move out of Alabama Saturday afternoon; only lingering, isolated showers around Saturday night with light wind. As always, remember any tropical forecast can change, so watch for updates today and tomorrow as Isaias approaches the coast. Sunday looks mostly warm and dry, and all of next week looks rain-free with highs well into the 80s. FOOTBALL WEATHER: The weather looks favorable for Saturday night's Alabama/Georgia game at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa (6:30p CT kickoff). Lingering clouds, an outside risk of a passing shower or two, and winds less than 15 mph.

EYES ON ISAIAS: Tropical Storm Isaias this morning has sustained winds of 40 mph, and is about 580 miles southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River. It is moving to the east/northeast at 8 mph. The latest NHC forecast track pushes Isaias into the Central Gulf Coast near Gulf Shores around midnight Friday night with sustained winds of 90 mph. The circulation then moves through West Alabama during the day Saturday. Here are the key messages this morning *Vertical wind shear then increases quite dramatically in the final 24 hours before Isaias reaches the Gulf coast, though it is looking more likely that Isaias will still be a significant hurricane when it makes landfall. Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches will be required for a portion of the Gulf coast later today. The first storm surge forecast for the Alabama coast and Mobile Bay will from NHC will come later today. *Near landfall, Isaias will also be interacting with a short-wave trough aloft, likely leading to an expanding wind field. This means rain and wind impacts will extend far from the center on the eastern side of the storm. *All of Alabama will see Saturday as the tropical system passes through. Heaviest rain will be from Mobile and Baldwin counties northward through parts of West-Central Alabama, where amounts could exceed 5 inches. North and East Alabama will likely see 1-3 inches of rain from Isaias. The rain will end from the south Saturday night, and most of the day Sunday will be dry. *There is a risk of tornadoes late Friday night and Saturday; SPC currently has roughly the southern half of the state in a severe weather risk Saturday. The air will be relatively stable over North Alabama, which will likely limit the tornado threat there. *Concerning the National Shrimp Festival at Gulf Shores and the rest of the Alabama coast... the worst of the weather (rain and wind) will come Friday afternoon, Friday night, and Saturday morning. A dry slot should bring an end to the rain Saturday afternoon; Sunday should be a very nice day on the coast. *Concerning the Alabama/Georgia football game Saturday night... best possible case is for a faster moving system. Rain could end before kickoff with diminishing wind. That is a very real possibility. But, with the current NHC forecast rain is still likely for the game with winds of 20-30 mph. And, a tornado threat is on the table as well with Isaias passing to the west. *Cocnerning the Zach Bryan concert in Auburn Saturday night... the current NHC forecast would mean a good chance of rain; winds in the 15-25 mph range. Like Tuscaloosa, a faster moving system would bring an end to the rain just before the concert begins, which is a possibility. *With any tropical system the forecast can change; be sure and watch for updates. Most of Alabama will be dry Sunday as the system continues to move away from the state. And, at this point next week looks dry with warm afternoons... highs in the 80s.

TROPICS/THE WEEKEND: A trough of low pressure (Invest 92L) over the southwestern Gulf is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Although environmental conditions appear only marginally conducive for development, a tropical depression is likely to form within the next couple of days. The system is expected to drift east-northeastward through the middle portion of the week before turning northward. Most reliable models and their ensemble members bring the system to the Central Gulf Coast around Mobile Bay Saturday. Concerning intensity, this could be a strong tropical storm or even a hurricane at the time of landfall. The name will be Isaias. Isaias has potential to be a high impact event for the Gulf Coast and the state of Alabama, but it is important to note that it is still too early for a specific impact forecast for any place. There are many big events going on, including the National Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores, the Alabama/Georgia football game in Tuscaloosa, and the Zach Bryan concert in Auburn. Saturday isn't looking good this morning based on the latest model output; it will be a day with lots of rain, and potentially lots of wind. Maybe even some risk of a few isolated brief tornadoes. But understand this could change based on the ultimate track and intensity of the tropical system. We will be much more specific tomorrow evening; this is when the system will have developed a core, and we get dropsonde data from hurricane hunter aircraft, which will be baked into the models. For event planners I would not make a decision until tomorrow night.
