The point of no return by Richard von Mises is worth reading:
"A state becomes almost unreformable when the majority of the population is financially or structurally dependent on the state (state employees, civil servants, recipients of subsidies, grants, or transfer payments, etc.). As soon as those who net benefit from or are supported by the state outnumber those who do not, the system blocks reforms, since the majority votes out of self-interest for the preservation or expansion of state services."
Does this sound familiar? Some European countries, France, Belgium, Finland are already way beyond that point, closely followed by Germany, Spain, Austria and Italy. It works for a while, as long as markets buy more sovereign debt at reasonable interest rates. The party ends when they stop though. For France, they stopped this month, Belgium will be next.
The longer the socialist illusion persists, the more painful the inevitable cuts and adjustments will be. It’s pure arithmetic. Good luck Europe, good luck Euro. Buckle up, it won’t be pretty.

Today, the calendar makes a right triangle, for the last time this century.
This Saturday is October 24, 2026.
Write it as 10/24/26 or 24/10/26, and the same beautiful relationship appears:
10² + 24² = 26²
100 + 576 = 676
But here’s what makes today special.
There are infinitely many Pythagorean triples. Only a handful fit our calendar.
Using the rule
month² + day² = (last two digits of the year)²,
the month cannot exceed 12, and the day cannot exceed 31. Those small limits leave exactly 12 qualifying dates in this century.
Today is the last.
The next will be March 4, 2105:
3² + 4² = 5²
That is a wait of more than 78 years.
An infinite family of triangles. Just twelve appearances on a century’s calendar.
Happy Pythagorean Triple Day.

RBI’s new forex reporting regime kicked in on Oct 1. On Oct 7, the RBI Governor said individuals earning from overseas services (tutors, freelancers, consultants etc) don’t need to report.
23 days later. No FAQ. No written clarification. Banks still sending freelancers a four-spreadsheet Export Declaration Form. Only 2 of 90 banks have published the mandated SOPs via @SindhuHarih in @businessline

How much has UP’s crime declined under Yogi Adityanath?
• 94.5% decline in attempted rape cases
• 79.9% decline in dacoity
• 72.0% decline in sexual harassment
• 68.3% decline in public order offences
• 34.2% decline in murder cases
• 33.4% decline in rape cases
• 27.8% decline in property offences
Crime in UP rose over decades, but declined under a decade of Yogi Adityanath.
Compared with 2016, registered cases across these categories have declined significantly by 2024.

Just another Sunday afternoon in SF: I paid $60 for 2 humanoid robots to clean for an hour.
Here's how it went:
(1) What happened: Sergey and Chelsea (the names of the two robots) finished about 80% of one floor in an hour: tidying, wiping down surfaces, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning the toilet.
- They came with a staff engineer at the company, who dropped them off and picked them up after an hour.
- They were controlled by 1 human operator each, in the Mission where the company office is at.
- The engineer gave me a number to text them, I texted a request to wipe the mirror. They did it.
(2) Performance and dexterity: Chelsea dropped a toy, struggled with a pillow, and had trouble balancing on the playmat. But overall, for all the tasks they did, grippers were enough. 5 fingers were not needed.
- The engineer told me the hardest task for them was making bed.
- They were quite loud, stomping around the house. Took a bit of time to get used to. They both wore gripper socks which protected the floors and helped them not slip.
- Interaction: I didn't know they can respond via voice. In the end they were conversing with us in voice which was nice.
(3) Unexpected observation: Their pants and shirts have holes in them. It's because they were dragged on and off the vans that transported them.
(4) Other user feedback: I shared my experience with some friends afterwards.
A user told me that unloading dishwasher was an "advanced task". They didn't attempt at mine since it was running at the time they were working. Another user said they scratched their hardwood floor. That's probably why they now wear gripper socks.
(5) Did they do as well as human cleaners? In terms of the tasks they did, I think so. In terms of speed, they were ~80% speed of humans when it comes to the more delicate tasks, but I would say they are quite smooth. They didn't finish the whole place, so it wasn't a full service.
(6) How does the math work out?
Each booking was only for 1 hour, since their batteries need to be swapped after 1 hour. So they didn't finish the place.
For a user: In SF, it's ~$200-220 to clean a full home around my neighborhood, with two human cleaners. Usually it takes around 2.5 hours. So around $40/manhour. This is $30/robot hour. Slightly cheaper, but again it's not fully finished with the 1 hour they were available.
For the company: It took 2 robots, 2 human operators, 1 staff member to dropoff/pickup, and 1 driver of the van to transport the robot. Definitely labor intensive. But they also retain the data they collect for training purposes.
(7) My biggest takeaway as a user: interaction / hospitality mattered. One of the humanoids was more friendly (Sergey), he waved at us when he came in. It'd have been great if they both introduced themselves in the beginning.
Beyond that, being able to do 2 hour slots (instead of one) would be great to finish the cleaning.
Overall, I appreciated their work and the fact that they got the robots out in people's homes. Deployment is not easy and so much learning from it each time

This is the “South Asia Bureau Chief” of @nytimes essentially perpetuating a dog-whistle against another Moslem columnist who has expressed a contrary opinion on a topic. The constant taunts about the pseudonym essentially carry a threat - if we ever learn your real identity, you cannot hide. This person knows exactly what he’s doing. And the @nytimes has no issues with it. It has zero credibility left on covering the Indian Subcontinent 🤷🏻♂️
God there are hit jobs - and then are mother-of-all-hit jobs.
Anyone can inspect the code. Yes the WB ERO has Enumeration Form Visibility hidden. Likely because the SC has transfered review responsibility to Judicial Officers.
Will try to share Claude link in comment.
While only EC can verify, the explanation is also easy to intuit from other parts of code:
- BLO collects verification form from voter
- but BLO cannot view it (as per this code)
- ERO can view it (they review BLO work)
- but in WB, Judicial Officers are reviewing ERO work
for those too lazy to download the js code - here's a snapshot:
