Jokes aside, this is a terrible take. The whole point of a statue is to tell future generations what a society believed was worth honoring.

The rule should not be, "Hey, you're in eighth grade, so you're gonna do eighth grade math."
No. The rule should be: what have you mastered? What new things do you have your prerequisites in place to learn?
If you've mastered the prerequisites, then move the student forward. If they haven't mastered the prerequisites, then fix it.
That's it. It's that simple.
The calendar should not be the thing controlling the learning. It's the mastery profile across all the skills for each individual student. That is what should be controlling their learning.
When students are ready and you make them wait, then you just waste their time.
And when students are not ready and you push them forward anyway, then you create knowledge gaps, holes that follow them for years, sabotaging their attempts at every new thing they try to learn and build on top, making them think they're just inherently not cut out for math.

The biggest scandal in education isn't even the low test scores. It's the high grades.

Myself, like MANY other young conservatives, have already had this done to us. Starting in college and still continuing now.
I’ve been stalked, doxed, threatened with violence and rape, had a fake bomb sent to my home, made to feel unsafe, made to feel alone.
So bring it on, we don’t back down.
You won’t scare us into being silent.

This woman is a disgrace to Michigan. I have spent my career training and mentoring young conservatives to be responsible leaders in the states where I have lived.

As a young conservative staffer, I’ve always thought of progressive staffers as honorable opponents in the war of ideas, messaging, and political strategy. I’m learning they do not think of us the same way.

And Elissa Slotkin is supposedly one of the more “moderate” Democrat senators.
When people tell you who they are, believe them. And act accordingly.

Brackenridge High School just became the first traditional high school in SAISD to get an A rating. How did they do it?
"Campus leaders say the culture at Brackenridge starts with high expectations."

To what does the South San Antonio ISD board president attribute the increase in their A-F score by a full letter grade?
1. Performance-based pay for educators
2. Aligning the district’s instruction around a high-quality curriculum

Product aside, I don’t like the normalization of siblings hating each other in this ad. Parents should actively work to ensure siblings treat one another kindly.
Done right, you can give your kids lifelong best friends.

We’re at a weird spot in our civilization. It’s somehow simultaneously more and less competent.
The god computer can cure cancer but the nurse doesn’t speak English. The flock camera can find a missing child in 5 minutes but you get robbed by a guy with 30 priors.
Good for New York! @GovKathyHochul
Inbox: Kathy Hochul is signing on the federal tax credit for student scholarships — unlocking millions of dollars for New York school chidren.
Huge kudos to the governor for bucking the unions and saying yes.

The Houston Zoo charges $9 to adults on SNAP and ~$30 to adults not on SNAP. At what point will the government stop punishing the productive middle-class?

In another study of medical students, when prior knowledge and preparation were controlled for, test anxiety did not predict final exam performance.
The study showed that weaker preparation, not test anxiety, explains the differences in test scores. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3622…

A week later, I'm still thinking about NHJ's article on NYC schools. It was courageous but a huge missed opportunity to call for real reform.
She blames school choice, inequality, segregation, the wealthy and herself. But she seems reluctant to criticize the actors and policies implicated by the failures she documents, perhaps because those conclusions would be uncomfortable for many of her ideological allies.
- She describes absentee teachers, poor instruction, unresponsive administrators, and students who graduate without mastering the material. But she never calls for greater accountability at the district, school, principal, and teacher levels.
- She documents teachers failing to fulfill basic responsibilities but doesn't explore whether tenure and other employment protections allow chronic teacher absenteeism and poor performance to persist.
- She laments the concentration of disadvantaged students but doesn't consider whether NYCPS should consolidate under-enrolled schools, thus allowing more resources towards instruction and increasing socioeconomic diversity.
- She describes her daughter earning As in honors classes despite substantial gaps in her knowledge. Yet she doesn't consider the value of standardized testing as a check on grade inflation and identifying learning gaps before they compound.
- She describes how experienced teachers choose to work in better schools but doesn't salute the districts that have had “reform superintendents” like DC, Dallas, Denver, and Houston that have used cash bonuses to incentivize the best teachers to work in the most disadvantaged schools.
- She notes that eliminating homework harmed her daughter, but doesn't examine how the movement against homework is largely driven by equity advocates who argue that it can turn unequal home circumstances into unequal academic outcomes.
- She condemns school choice yet uses it to secure a better school fit for her daughter, without noting it’s the only realistic escape valve for families who can’t move or afford private school.
- She describes the “impossible balancing act” of teaching students at vastly different levels but doesn't explore how academic tracking can help students at both ends of the academic spectrum.
- She describes disruptive students who harm the classroom environment but doesn’t ask for stronger disciplinary actions to protect other students.
- She documents a school that lowered academic expectations in pursuit of equity but doesn't acknowledge how doing so perpetuates the very achievement gaps those policies seek to eliminate.
Hannah-Jones’ story was powerful. She supplied the evidence for a broad examination of why schools are failing disadvantaged students. It could have been the strongest call in a generation for urban school district reform.
Segregation and poverty are real obstacles. But they cannot become explanations that absolve everyone else of responsibility. We can’t wait to solve all societal issues before demanding higher performing schools.
And thank you so much to all who mentored and helped me along the way!

Julia - It was a true pleasure working with you. Talented, smart, hard-working and mature beyond your years. Throw in the fact that your priorities are His priorities and you have the full package.
Thanks for your hard work and leadership in our office. #txlege
Special thanks to my wonderful (now former) boss @RepJamesFrank, whom it was such a privilege to work for. And thank you to @mayes_middleton and @chiproytx, who gave me my first opportunities in politics. I genuinely could not have asked for better members to work for!
