as AI collapses, I hope you all look at the most banal things like the inside of envelopes, and realize a human being created them. All these beautiful things, human beings made. There is design in everything manmade, everywhere- someone designed it. Never forget that
James Talarico traces 50 years of trickle-down back to one 1971 document, the Powell memo, a corporate blueprint to buy power
“In fact, you can, you can pinpoint this one document called the Powell memo, 1971.”
“But if you read this memo, it's basically a blueprint for how corporate interests can start to dismantle the Great Society and the New Deal”
“They're going to spend massive amounts of money in our politics, buying politicians in both parties, elevate corporate voices in media, appoint sympathetic judges.”
“And that has really been the story of the last 50 years in this country, last five decades.”

Trump’s agreement with Putin – if it even exists outside his imagination – is a betrayal of Ukraine, a betrayal of NATO and a betrayal of U.S. national security.
After defeat at the elections, Trump will make the U.S.-Russia Axis of Evil irreversible if he isn’t stopped in time.

After Biden beat Trump in 2020, there was a smugness from establishment Dems toward the left. That smugness and dismissal ushered Trump right back in. Now, after Tuesday, I’m seeing the same smugness as the establishment ignores VOTERS’ cries against Jeffries and Schumer. Idiots.

Charlie Angus: "If there's going to be decency in politics, we have to start taking on the criminal class, and there's going to have to be prosecutions. If we start seeing that, then we're going to know that the MAGA movement is dead. Otherwise, they're going to crawl away and try and rebuild."

I’m glad we’ve all had a day to celebrate, but all of this is still happening. Trump is going to hit Iran, who will retaliate in ways that require a response. Putin will escalate in Europe.
Trump’s “lame duck” status means he has no reason not to start a world war, or cause a great depression. He already predicted it.
I don’t mean to be an alarmist, but there are an unusually large number of pressure points on the world next week, starting with Netanyahu’s deadline of November 10th to keep himself in power.

There's a new term I've never heard before: "preferential democracy" to describe Israel.
It means killing off or expelling 80% of the Palestinians and ruling over 5 million others with absolutely no vote or veto so Jews can run the whole thing from the River to the Sea.

It’s easy to take Jane Austen for granted because we live in the world that she created. We struggle to see how groundbreaking and innovative her novels are because they set the template for all modern fiction. Pride & Prejudice, to cite the most obvious example, did more than invent a genre. Anyone who now writes a story in which two people fall in love is either inspired by her or reacting against her. She’s like Tolkien in that sense.
But she did much more than that. She perfected a method of narration known as “free indirect discourse” that’s now used by virtually every writer. You have only to read the novels of pre-Austen writers to see what a tremendous difference she made through her use of this technique. Literary scholar John Mullan argues that Emma launched a revolution in form & technique that’s comparable to the innovations of Joyce and Proust. It is the favorite novel of Susanna Clarke and of Katherine Rundell, who calls it “a book that shows as much of the sweep of the human heart, of fear, love, morality, untruth, foolery and triumph as a Shakespearean drama.” It is also, arguably, the novel that invented the mystery genre, having what J. K. Rowling has called the biggest twist in literature. You don’t notice the greatness of Austen for the same reason a fish doesn’t know that it lives in water.

I've read Pride and Prejudice and to this day I have no idea what the hell people see in it. It's not a bad book but I don't see it as being much beyond a glorified romcom. Pointing out foibles? Yeah, every half-decent writer does that. So what is Austen so good at?
Liz Bennet hates her mother and thinks her father, while well meaning, is an idiot (Austen doesn't seem to consider there to be anything wrong with any of that). Then there's Mr. Collins the clergyman whom the girls dislike despite his status in life. Okay, no one's entitled to someone else's romantic love but what great insights does the book contain on that?
What about any of this is supposed to be so impressive? Dickens would handle a failed courtship more efficiently and entertainingly. Just compare with Mr. Stryver's attempt at marrying Lucie Manette in A Tale of Two Cities.

One of the reasons "what if that were your daughter" is so offensive is it upholds the mythology that men with wives & children are good men. Men not only gain the benefits of women's labor when they marry & procreate, they also gain a shield of social acceptance.
The defence has leaned hard on "But He's A Family Man Now" as a plea for leniency.
That tends to be a powerful narrative. In this case it's asking Judge Caproni to ascribe practically miraculously transformational powers to the institution of marriage.
