3 things can be true. There is demand for masons & mjengo skills at the coast (Locals don’t have some skills) so these guys stay behind as experts. Whether they import wives or marry locals is a choice, it’s not an undoing of socio-economic conditions cos they can hustle for fare to come & hustle in Nai or go back home if it’s too tough. 😂Construction competent locals at the coast tend to do wiring, roofing & plumbing mostly.

Streets books are pirated. They are printed cheaply huko downtown Nairobi.
I spent over Ksh. 820,000 on the production of my two novels.
Street vendors do not spend such amount. They illegally acquire PDF and print them.
Shops only take 20-30% of the total cost of a book. Original books. Publishers will take their investment on the book, which is around 50%. Authors get 10%-30%.

🚨🚨BREAKING FROM SCORK: SUPREME COURT RULES EMPLOYER CAN STOP SALARY WITHOUT DISMISSING YOU.
The Supreme Court of Kenya has now drawn a hard line for public officers. In Dr. Magare Gikenyi v County Government of Nakuru & 4 Others [2026] KESC 12, the Court held that a public employer can lawfully stop your salary without terminating your employment and without violating the Constitution, if you fail to play your part. The case started in a painfully familiar way. A government doctor went on paid study leave. The leave expired. His studies delayed. He did not formally seek an extension. He did not properly regularize his absence. Then one day, his salary vanished. No dismissal letter. No dramatic hearing. Just silence and an empty bank account. He went to court claiming violation of dignity, fair labour practices, and fair administrative action.
The Supreme Court was not impressed. The Court held that salary stoppage is not the same thing as termination. Where a public officer absents themselves from duty without approved leave, the employer is entitled to stop salary under public service regulations. Article 47 does not protect an employee who ignores clear procedures. Due process cuts both ways. You must trigger it too. Most importantly, the Court rejected the idea that every administrative decision requires ritualistic hearings. Where the law and policy clearly provide for salary stoppage due to absenteeism, the employer does not need to negotiate with silence or reward neglect. Public funds are not a sympathy fund.
This decision lands hard for public servants. The Constitution protects rights, not complacency. Study leave has timelines. Extensions must be sought. Silence is not compliance. And salary is not an entitlement detached from duty. The Supreme Court has spoken plainly. If you disappear from work without approval, the State can stop paying you and the Constitution will not save you.

Anthropic settling this AI copyright lawsuit is a sign of the dam starting to burst.
There are lots more lawsuits still going on, and almost certainly more to come. We’ll see more settlements or outright victories for creators soon.

If you’re a victim of the controversial Kazi Majuu programme, visit the redress desk at NSSF Building, Block C, 7th Floor (8am–5pm) to file your complaint.
I directed this while Chairing the Senate Labour and Social Welfare Committee as we probed the overseas work program that allegedly defrauded hundreds of Kenyan job seekers.
National Employment Authority (NEA) claimed some agencies weren't registered, but that only raised more questions about NEA’s oversight. Agencies were grilled, some admitting to receiving money and still being in possession of applicants passports.
We’ve now ordered all recruitment agencies to document every case, follow up with victims, and report back in 21 days—with proof of refunds. #VIP

ALT This is an image of Senator Crystal Asige is seated at a committee meeting, chairing the session from a high-backed black executive chair. She is wearing a brown long-sleeved top patterned with black and brown checks. Her natural hair is neatly tied in a ponytail, and she is wearing small, round white earrings. In front of her is a cream-colored laptop, and a standard desk-mounted committee microphone is positioned nearby. The room includes fellow committee members and individuals invited to appear before the committee. The background behind Senator Crystal is plain white, and on the table are water bottles and other typical meeting materials.

In furthering @_ARIPO's high-level engagements in South Sudan, it was also an honour to engage with Hon. Ambassador Akuei Bona Malwal, the country's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. #IntellectualProperty has become a tool of economic, innovation, and cultural diplomacy. We, therefore, applaud the Ministry's intentionality in shaping its foreign policy to lead national development through multilateral cooperation. @SouthSudanGov

Edward "The Voice" Kwach put on countless Kenyan artists on when "local music" was an insult. No payola, nothing; he did it coz it was the right thing to do.
Radio was our lifeline for bookings.
His belief birthed careers and movements.

Another concern of mine as a former writer and illustrator who can no longer work. Generative AI is nothing less than theft, unless the original illustrators and writers are being remunerated. #illustration #WritingCommunity
The Government is considering allowing AI companies to freely use your works, unless you opt-out. This is unfair and unworkable.
Now is your chance to tell them what you think! Submit a response to their AI consultation using the guidance below.
