🇫🇷 🇬🇧The V1 was heading toward a hospital. The Free French pilot chasing it was eight days away from his wedding.
On August 3, 1944, Jean Maridor intercepted a German flying bomb threatening Benenden Hospital in Kent.
The 23-year-old Free French ace flew Spitfires with No. 91 Squadron of the RAF. Credited with five aerial victories, he had also become a skilled V1 hunter. His final interception would bring his tally to seven flying bombs destroyed individually.
Four years earlier, he had escaped France to keep fighting.
Shooting down a V1 carried a deadly risk: get too close, and its exploding warhead could destroy the fighter pursuing it.
There was another way. A pilot could slide his wingtip beneath the V1’s wing, disturbing the airflow and tipping the flying bomb off balance, without necessarily touching it.
According to the Le Havre municipal archives, Maridor tried to tip the "doodlebug" but could not bring it down.
With the hospital threatened, he turned to his cannons. He closed to less than 50 meters and fired.
The V1 exploded. The blast destroyed his Spitfire. France’s Order of Liberation records his final attack as a deliberate sacrifice to save the hospital.
Before the war, Maridor worked as a barber while learning to fly and studying to qualify for military pilot training. He earned his first pilot’s certificate at sixteen.
Eight days after his final mission, he was due to marry his fiancée, Jean Lambourn, a serving officer in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.
He was twenty-three. They never had their wedding.
Remember Jean Maridor.

Ask anyone who voted for Doug Ford in 2018: this isn’t the guy they voted for.
Why? Because he and his ministers got a taste of the sweet life, with private jets and luxury hotel rooms on your dime.
So why are you paying for this government’s luxury lifestyle?
We’re back at Queen’s Park.
Doug Ford took 21 weeks off from the legislature. I spent that time in communities from Scarborough to Thunder Bay, and I heard one thing loud and clear: life is getting too expensive.
Now Ford has a choice. He can show up for the people of Ontario, or keep helping himself and his insiders. We’re here to lower your costs and put money back in your pocket.

OCTOBER 27, 1918 — THE EXTRAORDINARY COURAGE OF WILLIAM GEORGE BARKER
108 YEARS AGO TODAY
Just 15 days before the end of the First World War, a Canadian flying ace from Manitoba fought one of the most remarkable aerial battles in military history.
His name was Major William George “Billy” Barker.
Born near Dauphin, Manitoba, in 1894, Barker enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1914 before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps in 1916.
He would become one of Canada’s greatest fighter pilots.
On the morning of October 27, 1918, Barker was flying a Sopwith Snipe fighter aircraft over the Forêt de Mormal in France when he spotted and attacked a German reconnaissance aircraft.
After destroying it, he suddenly found himself under attack by German Fokker fighters.
What followed was an extraordinary fight for survival.
Barker was shot in his right thigh, then wounded again in his left leg. Surrounded by enemy aircraft, he continued fighting despite his injuries.
He lost consciousness, and his aircraft plunged out of control.
Somehow, he regained consciousness, recovered his aircraft and resumed fighting.
Then another bullet shattered his left elbow.
He lost consciousness a second time.
Yet Barker recovered once again, fought his way through the attacking aircraft and eventually reached Allied lines, where he crash-landed his badly damaged fighter.
Despite his terrible wounds, he survived.
During the engagement, Barker was officially credited with destroying four enemy aircraft, bringing his wartime total to 50 victories.
For his extraordinary courage, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for valour in the face of the enemy.
Barker became one of the most highly decorated servicemen in Canadian history.
Tragically, he died in an aviation accident near Ottawa on March 12, 1930, at just 35 years old.
Today, we remember a remarkable Canadian whose courage in the skies over France remains an enduring part of our military history.
Major William George Barker, VC, DSO & Bar, MC & Two Bars (1894–1930).
🇨🇦 We will remember him.

💔 IN MEMORY OF JESSE ADAMS — A TRUE HERO FOR ANIMALS 💔
It is with enormous sadness that we have learned of the tragic death of Jesse Adams, founder of RainCoast Dog Rescue Society in Canada, who lost his life while carrying out an animal rescue mission in one of the most dangerous areas of Ukraine.
Jesse dedicated his life to saving animals, even when it meant putting his own life at risk.
We first came to know Jesse in 2021, when Afghanistan fell to the Taliban. Jesse and RainCoast were among the extraordinary organisations that came together to assist KSAR with the evacuation of 285 cats and dogs, helping many find loving forever homes.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Jesse travelled to the border to help fleeing families and their pets, providing veterinary care, supplies and assistance getting animals to safety.
He returned repeatedly, undertaking increasingly dangerous missions.
Most recently, Jesse worked alongside Animal Rescue Kharkiv, rescuing hundreds of animals from devastated frontline communities under constant threat from drones, missiles and artillery.
These were extraordinary acts of compassion and courage in the face of unimaginable danger.
Jesse knew the risks. He knew every mission could be his last. Yet he continued because he believed animals caught in conflict deserved protection just as much as those living in peace.
Those of us working in animal rescue in conflict zones understand and accept these risks. But few possess the courage to repeatedly travel towards danger when everyone else is trying to escape it.
Jesse was one of those very special people.
His death is a devastating loss to his family, friends, RainCoast and the international animal rescue community.
Our hearts go out to everyone who knew and loved him, particularly the Ukrainian rescuers who worked alongside him.
His legacy lives on in every animal he saved and every rescuer he inspired.
Rest in peace, Jesse. The world has lost an extraordinary human being, and the animals have lost a true champion. 🐾💔
With love and deepest respect,
Louise and everyone at War Paws
