I want a brighter and more abundant future (than I had) for my son and others of his generation. That means building a lot more stuff in the highest opportunity places in the country.
This thread is such a perfect encapsulation of the "lead paint caucus" mindset: "When I was young, I had to choose between living in a lead paint filled shithole, moving to a sprawlburg, or uprooting my life and relocating to another city. And so should you!"

Redbox Research, an outfit nobody has ever heard of, claiming to have a 3,000 person poll. It's the polling arm of "A Fight Worth Having," a random one-man blog. And the "How We Poll" page flags as 100% AI written in Pangram. And it claims to have conducted 30 polls at once.
RedBox Research poll | 10/20-10/23 LV Ohio Governor 2026 🟦Amy Acton 48.2% 🟥Vivek Ramaswamy 43.8% (First poll fielded since the ad) Link to poll: afightworthhaving.com/pollin…

I mean Cenk is dumb and a bigot. Everyone knows this. But this ad is dumb and bigoted at scale. It’s innumerate and morally obtuse and if anything remotely like it was aimed at Muslims he and his ilk would (defensibly) be outraged. But this shit is fine when aimed at the you know who.
New @RebellionPac ad dropping in Michigan. We have to suffer here at home, so Israel can get all its wars. That’s why they buy politicians like Mike Rogers. He promised to serve Israel “unconditionally,” but never made that promise to you.

It’s worth digging into *why* we can’t have this kind of fine grained urbanism: - Building is so damn difficult you need a staff to navigate the bureaucracy. - Mom and pop owners are generally relegated to single family zones where setbacks and FAR prohibit anything like this.
In North America we put the fine grained facade on the big box because we have no clue how to deliver the real thing

i regret t o inform you that economists have waded into the airbnb discourse (but he's right)
I think having AirBnB guests clean up their own garbage does solve a moral hazard problem. The cost of reducing garbage is plausibly much lower than the cost of cleaning up garbage, so it's efficiency-improving to make the guest the residual claimant on garbage

This is unsustainable. Also it’s kind of crazy top line inflation lead by grocery and energy is more of the top election issue than specifically health insurance. The system is breaking down.
BREAKING: The average cost of a family’s annual health insurance premium in the US is up +$1,303 YoY, or +5%, to a record $28,303. This marks the 4th consecutive annual increase of at least +$1,300. Over this period, the average annual premium for family coverage has surged +$5,884, or +26%. To put this into perspective, CPI inflation has risen +13% over the same period, or half as much. Since 1999, the average health insurance premium for a family has soared +$22,494, or +387%. This represents an average annual growth rate of +6.1%, well above CPI inflation at +2.6% over the same period. Health insurance has never been more expensive.

BAAJA doesn't put data centers on public lands (Trump's EO is trying that). It makes data centers pay for the grid and limits the admin's ability to pull clean energy permits. Those are new guardrails. Waiting for the next Congress still means passing a bill Trump will sign.
Senate permitting bill would cut the public out of public lands and lock in data center, nuclear, and fossil fuel approvals westernpriorities.org/2026/1…

Something so nostalgic about conservatives performatively language policing Obama. Such simpler times. Now our president says he’s gonna wipe civilizations off the map and stuff.
This line is getting praise on X, but it’s actually elitist garbage written by a speechwriter who clearly hasn’t spent much time in a Cheesecake Factory, which has none of the gaudy Trump aesthetic, and just feels good to say because it represents flyover MAGA “night out.”

This is correct everyone should be able to choose any amount of social trust they wish, with as little as zero. It’s how liberalism deals with most monsters: you simply don’t have to transact with them if you don’t want to; there’s always an alternative.
Replying to @inerati
i feel like im the only person who just straight up loves atomized liberal societies. the fact that ~none of my material needs require any degree of interpersonal trust with my counterparty is a triumph of modern civilization. the commune is the most tyrannical social order.

This is why the focus on insurance companies as the main villains in US healthcare is misguided. The providers are a huge problem and many suggested insurance tweaks would serve to empower them.

Maintenance costs on that is probably $1M/yr. So assuming you live there for a long time, the implied purchase price is more like $20M. So you need a centimillionaire to buy it, who is willing to step into someone else’s dream home? If I’m worth $100M, I’m custom building my own thing.
more rich people should just buy giant houses in random places to throw massive parties and have people fly in from time to time

Entrenching OpenAI and Anthropic as omniscient overlords over all of society would be absolutely catastrophic. Open weight models must be allowed to proliferate.
wtf does this even mean & why did they start it off with congratulations lmao

Eliminating mining and heavy industry in the G7 was a bad idea, y’all.
Japan is months away from running out of yttrium, a Japanese official told the Financial Times. China shipped Japan 4 tonnes of yttrium oxide in September, down from 51 tonnes a year earlier. Every AI data center needs power and every gas plant needs a turbine. The first rows of blades sit right behind the burner, in gas hotter than the melting point of their metal. Part of what protects them is a ceramic coat of zirconia a few tenths of a millimeter thick. Pure zirconia changes crystal shape as it cools, swells about 5%, and cracks off the blade. Adding 6 to 8% yttrium oxide stops that. Jet engines use the same coat, and the US has told Beijing it will not export the engines for China’s C919 airliner because the yttrium shortage has constrained production. Chip toolmakers coat the inside of etch chambers with yttrium oxide too, because it resists the fluorine plasma that erodes other materials. China exported about 1,600 tonnes of yttrium last year. At China’s price of $9 a kilo, that is about $14M. Argus prices it at $1,150 a kilo outside China. Coating makers are now revisiting zirconia mixed with magnesium and calcium, recipes from the 1970s and 80s. They make a less tough coat. I build chemical plants. Outside China, almost no one separates yttrium at commercial scale. A new plant takes 18 to 36 months or longer to build. ft.com/content/ebd3244a-9120…

Progressives being progressive about everything except whether you can afford to live here (splitting with the urbanists) is sort of the most predictable outcome.
