So did you know that no-one really knows why the most used spacecraft propulsion system today actually works? I have been bored and kind of sick for the past 2 days so here is a quick thread on Hall thruster physics: 1/

It so fascinating seeing how different countries do election nights. What's up with the snacks in NZ?

We finally made some quick integrations/test fixtures. Handles were optional but definitely only added style points.

You can take the Indo-European out of the steppe but not the steppe out of the Indo-European. See you later space cowboy
this is your yearly reminder that Mark C. Lee brought a picture of a cow aboard STS-30 to remind him of home (he grew up on a farm in Wisconsin), resulting in this gem of a photo

One of my favorite examples was from an old video (that I think got nuked when @NASA deleted a lot of their old YouTube channels and never bothered to re-upload anything). It was Starship-style flap control in a vertical wind tunnel in like 1959. *Nothing* is new.

1. Monks Mound — Cahokia, Illinois 📍100 ft tall | 14 acres at base | 1050 CE The largest earthwork in the Americas. Aligned to solstices. Tiered like a ziggurat. Over 22 million cubic feet of earth….moved by hand. It’s taller than the pyramids by volume. Still standing. Still ignored.

They’re older than the Aztecs. Taller than Stonehenge. Built without wheels, metal, or beasts of burden. But they barely make the textbooks. Here are the 5 largest ancient mounds still standing in North America….plus 4 that time almost buried: 🧵👇

Pretty cool video of the main producyion floor. Always cool to see so many rockets in assembly.
Every 8 days an Electron rocket rolls off the production line thanks to our mission-obsessed team and advanced factories. The Electron team is growing as we prepare to launch more rockets than ever before in 2027. Role open across vehicle assembly, composites, GNC, propulsion, manufacturing engineering, software, and more. Those with automotive, aerospace, marine, aviation, and manufacturing experience are a great fit. Come to New Zealand and Long Beach, CA to design, build, test, and launch rockets. Relocation support available. Adventure awaits: rocketlabcorp.com/careers/

I don't understand why so many countries are clamoring to fund these vanity astronaut missions. Surely they offer very little return on investment? We're talking about €50 to €100 million that definitely could have been put to use investing in other space programmes?

On 22 October 1975 the Soviet probe Venera 9 successfully landed on Venus, despite its harsh environment and survived it for 53 minutes. Venera 9 took the first picture (b/w) from another planet's surface. @AstrospaceI @astrosteven_ @letiziadavoli @Truthful_ast @LKosmonautika

On this day in 1911, Roald Amundsen and four companions left the Bay of Whales to begin their historic journey to the South Pole. With 52 Greenland dogs, four sledges and meticulous planning, they set out across Antarctica's frozen wilderness. Less than two months later, they became the first humans to reach 90° South. Chicago is great but its problems are obvious: it was built over soggy marshland and, to this day, ancient amphibians, pale salamanders the size of train cars and toads the size of houses, slumber in the soft mud beneath the water table. One day, those monsters will wake up.
Chicago is an excellent city. Why isn't this more well known?

Among the donors listed in the documents: Charlie Ergen of Dish Network/EchoStar ($25M), Lockheed Martin ($10M) and commercial space station developer Vast ($1M).
The Post obtained a list revealing all the major donors to President Trump’s White House ballroom, including contributors who have benefited from regulatory decisions, government contracts and, in one case, a pardon for a family member. See the full list: wapo.st/3UtGh0X

Using my own flight weight estimation look up table from my projects, it is indeed possible to make an amateur scale CG thruster powered hopper platform. I'll do a basic CAD model to get an approximation of MOI and mass of this then do a 6DOF sim on actual thruster layout and sizing.
Serious question: could this be done at a smaller scale? Meaning, could an STL be 3d printed and then this propulsion system be used for an RC version?
