The only people who are people in my opinion are those who have experienced both awe and flow state. A narrow parochial mind is subhuman to me. Imagine trying to argue with someone who has never been leveled by a sunset, poem, or work of art. Imagine thinking it’s worthwhile to change the opinion of someone who has never once lost themselves in a creative task.

Two billy is crazy
Early this morning, the FBI and our partners arrested 8 of 15 defendants in Southern California, Dallas and Chicago, for their roles in health care schemes that collectively resulted in $2 billion in fraudulent claims to government and private health care programs, including sham substance abuse treatment programs, unnecessary artery treatments, and bogus hospice services. Two of the 15 defendants were arrested last week. “Today the FBI and our partners executed 8 arrests, with 7 additional defendants charged, after the subjects involved allegedly orchestrated a multi-year healthcare fraud scheme resulting in $1.8 billion in losses,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “The defendants - including medical professionals - made fraudulent claims to steal from taxpayer funded healthcare and insurance programs, including substance abuse treatment programs, hospice care, and Medicare programs in the Los Angeles area designed to help the most vulnerable. Under President Trump’s leadership with the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, stealing from American taxpayers will no longer be tolerated in this country. This FBI will continue to move aggressively with our Department of Justice to dismantle fraud networks stealing from hard working taxpayers.” “Healthcare fraud cheats American taxpayers and health care programs out of billions of dollars,” said Patrick Grandy, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office. “The FBI will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to do everything in our power to safeguard our government health care programs and the taxpayers picking up the bill.” @IRS_CI @USAO_LosAngeles @HHS @DEALosAngeles Additional details: justice.gov/usao-cdca/pr/la-…

This is exactly why the city is not incentivized to build/lower property values.
Another insane milestone in SF. I went down a rabbit hole on this one. The previous owner passed away in January at age 96. Her property was assessed at $919,446, and she paid just $11,599 annually in property taxes. The new owner will pay an estimated $336,762 a year.

You can’t manufacture cool from first principles, nerd. You need chaos, and that comes from artists who by their very nature don’t buy in to programs
My experience partying all night at Berghain in Berlin made me think of how we're lacking this experience in the San Francisco tech scene. We can literally become the coolest, most tasteful social scene on Earth if we had our version of Berghain, but better. So let's build it. The best aspect of Berhain is how they select who gets in. The club has a vibe and atmosphere, and if you aren't wearing the right clothes or have the right demeanor, you don't get in. That's how you cultivate a tasteful crowd. We can improve on this by only letting in high agency, talented operators in the tech scene who can still pull off dope outfits, so no geeks. SF is in dire need of late night venues, and Berghain goes until 8am. That's a little too crazy for high net worth operators who are changing the world so we could do something like 2am. Berghain also is kinda dark and in a weird building so we'd put the club in a SoMa corporate office that we convert to speakeasy or barcade vibe. Maybe add a quiet area for people to bring their laptops and work? I honestly feel like we're improving on the Berghain form here, especially by swapping out the crowd of weird partiers in inappropriate clothes (or lack there of) with insanely cracked founders and engineers. I'm super stoked about this idea, SF tech could really run the dopest parties on the planet.

demanding music artists support your binary, cartoonish, petulant political stances because you liked their music is hilarious Same weird pressure being signed to a pseudo Christian-music record label. Religious tribalism is gross, but even more gross when the religion is a political tribe
We already knew Metallica are greedy assholes who don't care about anything but money. But just to make totally sure we know, here they declare it like it is something to be proud of.

Preach
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

Women hate fraternities because they’re the last bastion of male freedom. The unconquerable tribe. They want to turn frats into the YMCA and end all male-exclusive spaces for good. They need to be stopped & shunned. Protect male spaces from the scourge of female sensitivities.

It was a crapshoot whether or not colonists sided with the English or French. ROI on picking the French was getting the entire continents breadbasket 25 years later. For that reason, and for Alexander Dumas, we can’t ever fully hate the French
In 1803, Napoleon declared that the Louisiana Purchase would secure the power of the United States forever, adding: “I have given England a rival who, sooner or later, will humble her pride.”

Good to be ready for both
Someone asked if I was ready for the fall and it took me a second to realize they meant autumn and not the total collapse of society.

September 11, 2001 has been a very rough and busy day, so by popular request I’m making a single thread with the day’s highlights: 1. 8:46 AM: the world was shocked by a surprise crash at the World Trade Center, initially perceived to be a small plane but soon discovered to be a deliberate jet collision.
This is just coming in: there appears to be a major fire on the upper floors of one of the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Reports claim that a small plane, either a Cessna or a private jet, accidentally flew into the tower around the 80th floor, due to either an air traffic control communications error or a malfunction on the aircraft. The dozens of victims are in our thoughts. We will continue to monitor rescue and repair surrounding this alarming accident.

Discernment requires discrimination. To do right one must discriminate against wrong, to know good one must define evil, to speak of health one must understand sickness, revealing the strata of better and worse, a hierarchy which ultimately points to God (who/what else could represent the highest Good?) Hierarchy is a law of nature. Those who hate hierarchy hate nature and God. This is why Communism is inherently evil, and why it only produces tyrants, who without subordination to a higher power assume the role of God themselves. There is no equality in nature, a hierarchy always forms, but in Communism only those with proximity to authoritarian state power get to eat well. Work, ingenuity, inspiration, grit, these do not earn the worker more food. Only by participating in the states monopoly on violence do you get to extract more for yourself from the worker. When Communism attempts to “flatten” hierarchies the only roles left to play are tyrant or sheep. Worker or Apparatchik. It always baffles me how many want to be enslaved by the godless state. Sheep begging for a sociopathic shepherd.
