As The Wiz turns 48, hereās what Michael saw in the Scarecrow:
āI auditioned for the part of the Scarecrow because I thought his character best fit my style.ā
But Michael saw more in the Scarecrow than a character that suited his style.
āEverybody thinks heās very special, but, really, heās very sad. Heās so, so sad. Do you understand his sadness?ā
Michael loved the Scarecrow since childhood. In 1978, he said:
āI always fell in love with the scarecrow. I think most kids do ācause you feel sorry for him and everything and his character, and I always watched him.ā
The Scarecrow thinks he has no brain, even though he keeps coming up with clever ideas. The crows keep telling him heās stupid until he starts believing them.
Michael once said, āTell a lie long enough, people believe.ā Itās hard not to think of the Scarecrow when you hear that. Heās judged by what others tell him he is, not by what he actually is. Michael knew what it was like to have people believe things about him that had little to do with the person he really was.
In a 1977 conversation with Timothy White, Michael explained what he saw in the character:
āThere are so many smart people walking around that donāt know theyāre smart, donāt believe in themselves.ā
He went on to explain that the Scarecrow is a smart guy who simply doesnāt realize it. The brain he thinks heās missing has been there all along.
Years later, while chatting with Brett Ratner in 2004, Michael put it this way:
āI donāt care if the whole world is against you or teasing you or saying youāre not gonna make it. Believe in yourself. No matter what.ā š«

John Branca needs to go. Itās so infuriating to feel so powerless, knowing thereās nothing we can do. This man has been managing Michaelās estate for 17 years, and who knows how much longer heāll remain the executor. He has Michaelās costumes and other personal items in his own home, was involved in negotiations to secure a position at Sony, and is in charge of all of Michaelās assets and the money Michael continues to generate.
Oh boy, I have so much to say, and Iām absolutely furious.
Donāt forget what Michael really thought of Branca when Michael 2 comes out.
since itās ghosts anniversary, i decided to do a dramaturgical analysis of it. itās sunday and iāve got time today, so why not. not sure if this is something youād be interested in but i think at least a few of you might enjoy reading itš„²
u guys know this was one of his personal favorites, right?š

30 years of Ghosts and it still stands as THEE most ambitious thing Michael ever created. The gothic visuals and camera work felt like it was made for the cinema.
The effects were years ahead of their time for a music video from Michael pulling his own face apart to morphing into 5 different character. Spending multiple hours in heavy prosthetics to become characters that are almost unrecognisable as him.
The story outlines his life and feelings at that time, an outsider being driven out by a town that refuses to understand him.
Three decades on, the visuals, the choreography and the insane level of craft behind it still hold up as a true cinematic masterpiece that I will NEVER shut up abt.
these were actually synth strings. michael wanted to use new technology to create sounds that had never been heard before while quincy wanted to use live instruments. i get michaelās vision but i canāt help wondering what this track wouldāve sounded like with real strings.

48 years ago today, a 20 year old Michael Jackson debuted on the big screen as the Scarecrow in The Wiz, and the role fit him like the newspaper he was stuffed with.
Behind the heavy makeup and ragtag costume, MJ brought a loose, bone free physicality and warmth that critics singled out amid the filmās mixed reception. His vocals and moves on āYou Canāt Win,ā and āEase on Down the Roadā already hinted at the isolation pops, fluid control and emotional vulnerability that would continue to define his stage presence. It was also the set where he first crossed paths with Quincy Jones and their partnership would go on to reshape music.
Enjoy some of MJās best moments and scenes as the Scarecrow that has endured as the clear standout and favorite š¾š āØ
