finishing research papers the old way at this time is a funny activity
it really feels like being the last of the guys building a pyramid by rolling giant bricks on logs or carrying them in your hands or whatever while a modern construction site is in view

Reading all those recent beautiful essays by Terry Tao, Kevin Buzzard and @wtgowers, I could not resist, but write up my deeply personal perspective on how I perceive and see things:

In the last 2-3 years AI has taken over most programmers’ classical jobs and in the last 2-3 months most of mathematicians’ classical job. Programmers have by and large embraced the change while mathematicians seem to be mostly resisting it. Maybe this explains the difference.

It's interesting to think about how much, if at all, the positive sentiments expressed here are appropriate to mathematicians. His main reason for optimism comes at the end: that now that "chiselling code by hand" is no longer necessary, "we can build amazing things". 1/3
Many researchers in computational complexity have a mental image of some invisible fence beyond which we (all of us) cannot prove stuff. Once in a blue moon - like in this paper - this fence is breached. Neat Human-AI collaboration.

While I am glad to see the mathematics world start thinking about itself in the age of AI, I share the disappointment of @tylercowen that they are pointing a finger at the AI companies rather than accepting that the new mathematical sensibilities must come from themselves.
Very good post from @tylercowen. Endorse.

Crypto is not just a ledger of transactions---it’s a ledger of truth and trust. That’s what makes Bitcoin valuable. For Bitcoin this requires burning energy on random number guessing. What if we could instead leverage massive, real-world computation to achieve the same level of security? This has been an outstanding open problem for more than 30 years in academia, and since the emergence of blockchains in industry.
Last year, we proposed the first solution (eprint.iacr.org/2025/685). Our mathematical breakthrough suggests piggy-backing on matrix multiplications, the native operation of GPUs that power the AI revolution, from pre-training, post-training, to inference. The potential applications are endless: improving the unit-economics of LLMs, shifting AI-generated wealth back to users, and enabling new primitives such as settlement and even UBI systems for AI agents.
Since then, we've worked hard turning the math into a fully operational system. From the algebra and CUDA kernels to a working L1 blockchain and a production LLM inference pipeline implementing this “2-for-1” technology. Today, we’re excited to share that the @prlnet is ready, and will soon enable serving SoTA LLMs while mining the blockchain at negligible additional cost.
Along the way, we encountered many fascinating challenges. We’re now publishing them as a collaborative Polymath challenge, spanning open questions in math, systems and economics. If you’re interested, take a look and feel free to reach out: pearlpolymath.com.

1/ Bitcoin doesn’t change. But what you can do with it just did.
From the June 2024 announcement that Starknet would scale Bitcoin, to the product rollouts of March 2025, the path has been clear.
BTCFi on Starknet is where that momentum now leads 🧵

🚨 Blockchains meter transactions (Ethereum’s “gas”, Solana’s “compute units”), but transactions consume multiple resources: CPU, memory, bandwidth, etc. Should we meter and price them separately? Our new paper with (Nir Lavee, @noamnisan, and @maxresnick ) has answers.
