I quit my job last year at Lyft. If I didn't try entrepreneurship now that I'm young, I'd never do it.
Then came the self doubt. If I don't party & do crazy things now that I'm young, I'll also never do it. I could've also traveled for a year!
But it was the best decision of all 2024.
I've come to accept that I'm just the kind of person who is passionate about work. A question I really like to ask is "what's your retirement plan?".
Some people say growing a garden. Others will move to the beach or build a house. For me, it's probably the work I'm doing right now.
So why wait until retirement? I'll definitely chill down when that happens. But this feels like I'm truly living my life to the max.
That's it
Helium cracked app2web
Bye bye 30% fee 👋
🚨 UPDATE: Helium App2Web is live.
Helium serves millions of users for apps like Locket, Hallow, & Wisprflow.
Now, we’re launching App2Web: the best way to stop paying 30% fees.
In 2025, Courts ruled apps could send US users to web, but saw conversions tank.
We spent a year optimizing every inch of app2web with a fully-customizable web editor, smart user targeting, pre-loading optimizations, dynamic fallbacks & payment retries.
The results are wild. On average, we see an increase of +40% proceeds per user.
And of course, it’s fully compliant.

I know an amazing software engineer looking for an open role. Shoot me a DM if you're interested! :)
Running ads can be so frustrating:
- It’s expensive to get started
- Experts suggest diametrically different things. @CTtheDisrupter is a consolidation fan, Marcus Burke is a consolidation hater
- Your business depends on meta/tiktok/etc, and they *will* fuck you at some point
- Attribution is a mess
- …
We see people who run successful UGC wanting to do ads because it *looks* easier. And it’s smart to diversify.
But the devil hides in the details. Cracking both UGC and ads is a challenge (partly because you lose focus)
the $0 budget couldn’t be more true lol
marketing without budget is truly a work of art
It sucks to say it because it's such a cliche
But you won't know if something will work until you try it
And most importantly, don't move on without knowing why it failed and how your next try is better
If you keep at it for long enough, things will start to fall into place
Or as Aristotle said, "Fuck around and find out"
Nick is building another amazing app to get people off their phones. I hope he can get his app back quickly 🙏
apple has paused my payouts
because of a suspected DPLA violation, citing guideline 5.6.4 (app quality)
which basically means i got enough refunds / bad reviews to trigger an investigation
it’s scary, but i think i know what caused it
there are three (3) contributors…
i’ll share so you guys can learn too, tldr:
1) i offered users 100% refund guarantee
2) high ticket price testing internationally
3) the app was BROKEN for 16 days
#1 - Encouraging Refunds
from day 1 of this app, we explicitly advertise a “no questions asked, 100% refund guarantee” on the paywall. i did this with the best intentions, because that is truly our policy. if our users don’t love our app, i WANT them to get their money back. and i make sure they know they can.
but this comes with a tradeoff. it instills trust at the paywall moment, which brings in more users who will go on to enjoy the app and happily pay. but it’s also a magnet for people who *will* refund, that otherwise wouldn’t have subscribed.
and of course, the biggest “tradeoff” is that it makes our refund rate look much higher than industry average. from a business perspective, i didn’t mind this. because i knew excess refunds were from our guarantee. but from Apple’s perspective, this puts undue stress on the system and just makes your app look shady (even if it’s not!)
#2 - Testing High Prices
i’ve been testing prices upward of $69.99
…what I wasn’t paying much attention to is how that price translates outside the US
$69.99 in the US is ~$100 for a lot of European countries after VAT & fees
this had an outsized impact on our refund rate in $$ terms, because the people in Europe who were charged that price were more likely to refund
#3 - App Breaking Bug
we fell asleep at the wheel on a devastating bug that broke our app for 18 days
our D1 retention is currently 75%
but for two weeks in May, it was ~35%
with refund guarantees + high price tests in the backdrop, a broken app is a disaster
Lessons:
a) i’m your guinea pig on refund guarantees. and my conclusion is: don’t do it. as a business practice i love it, but it *will* inflate your refund rates. i did it to ensure customer satisfaction, but understandably, Apple has to interpret it as customer DIS-satisfaction.
b) be careful with your early price discovery. start low, not high. increase prices slowly, and monitor their FULL funnel - paywall view, paid conversion, AND REFUND RATE. even if a higher price is getting you better proceeds per install, if it comes with a high enough refund rate, you might just want to accept lower profitability to be safe. lastly, know what your prices materialize to internationally. don’t charge outrageous $$ on accident.
c) always check that your app is working. it’s easy to let sales/profitability become a proxy that your app is doing fine - especially when you’re focused on marketing. don’t do that. check your mixpanel every couple days
Am I Worried?
our app has >1k reviews in US @ 4.8 stars and >5k reviews globally @ 4.7 stars
tons of glowing written reviews, tons of happy people using it every day
our refund rate is a result of me trying to *help* our users and brief *mistakes* on price tests + product that we resolved a while ago. refund rate has already come down -50% since the May bug, and i removed the refund guarantee from paywalls this morning which will have a giant impact
i’m optimistic that Apple will find the truth in their investigation - that our refunds are of a different nature / we have good intentions / things already improving
but yes, i am worried
if you can vouch for me, show support on this post, or help in any way, i’d appreciate it so much

As long as you have the money, quitting your job can be a great plan, even with a crap idea.
My first idea was horrible. But my whole focus went to it and other attempts.
Eventually, I landed on something that’s done $1M.
It’s not the idea, it’s the journey and attitude.
A friend wants to quit his job to launch a startup and I believe it’s a terrible idea (both the product and the leaving the job part) but I’m not sure what to tell him. If I say what I really think I’m afraid I will hurt his feelings but on the other hand if I encourage this to go ahead I feel like I’m doing him a disservice.
We need a feature on Sentry to just "Give Up" on a bug. I'm so sick of this one that I'll just pretend it's not there thanks have a good day
Pat believes in our mission. We did $30k/mo when our video came out, now it's $100k/mo.
A lot of our learnings genuinely come from videos we watched on @starter_story and @Superwall podcast. Go binge-watch them now.

Try to collaborate with as many people as you can, even your competition. Especially in a big space like ours (Screentime) it's so fricking big, competition doesn't really matter, so might aswell help each other out.
