@Ginkgo
@jrkelly
Congrats to @jkcla (Jason Kelly), Ena Cratsenburg and the @Ginkgo team on selling your first autonomous lab to a top-tier pharma. The lab is headed to Novo Nordisk's new R&D site in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Novo isn't just buying services from the lab. It's buying the lab itself. That's a meaningful step for AI-driven biology.
Ginkgo now describes two offerings built on one autonomous lab platform:
• Autonomous Labs: RAC and Catalyst systems sold to pharma, national labs, universities and the U.S. government
• Cloud Lab: experiments run on Nebula, which Ginkgo calls the world's largest autonomous lab, with more than 100 reconfigurable automation carts
The demand is showing up in the deals:
• 22 ADME customers signed in Q3, 20 of them first-time Ginkgo customers
• Takeda, Argenx, Lundbeck and AbbVie founded the Antibody Developability Consortium
• An ARPA-H GIVE subcontract worth up to $17.5 million to bring autonomous systems into RNA medicine manufacturing
• Ginkgo providing Nebula access to the NSF's $1.5 billion X-Labs initiative
Autonomous labs are starting to look like national research infrastructure, not just a lab upgrade.
Ginkgo and Novo were both part of SynBioBeta 2026 in San Jose. Will Serber, Cynthia Collins and George Peabody from Ginkgo were on our speaker lineup, and Peter Clark of Novo Nordisk spoke as well.
Peter returns next May to speak on AIxBIO at SynBioBeta 2027 in San Jose. Jason and Ena, we'd love to see you there for the conversation.

Toured @Ginkgo's autonomous lab today, and even more bullish on where drug discovery is headed.
Rows of robotic workcells running around the clock, with scientists designing the work instead of pipetting it. This is what R&D is going to look like, and it's closer than most people think.
The bottleneck has never been ideas. It's been the time and cost of testing them.
When you can run more experiments in a week than a traditional lab does in a quarter, the whole math of drug development changes.
Big thanks to @jrkelly for the tour and pushing the industry forward.
Much better than expected! $DNA

observations on lab automation & biodata
I see four archetypes of business resolving...
1. 'hardware' companies
e.g., @trilobio
robotics companies which exist to offer large scale deployments into pharma companies and biotechs. the product is the hardware.
sustainable, but not growing at VC-backed pace - few of these left given they’ve all now pivoted in reaction to the demand for biodata.
2. 'output data' companies
e.g,. @adaptyvbio
infrastructure that allows rapid verification of biological hypotheses, giving agents the ability to generate ground truth on-demand. the experimental output data is the product.
most sustainable over the long run - these will be the companies that allow agents to autonomously explore scientific search space. Strong long-term demand given how little we currently understand about biology and much more data scientific AIs will need to truly generalise across domains.
3. ‘process data’ companies
- e.g., @transfyrai
how we teach claude / GPT to be great lab scientists. the product here is data which trains agents *how* to do science - what the process looks like, how to troubleshoot, defining ‘good’ and ‘bad’ practice such that agents can one day perform or instruct wet-lab science themselves.
limited sustainability - given the correct input data, models will quickly saturate. Marginal utility of this kind of data will fall off rapidly after some time.
if the ‘process’ companies are constructed in the right way they will pivot seamlessly into ‘output’ companies (or indeed do both at the same time)
4. 'data dropshipping' companies
- e.g., too many people right now
micro1-esq plays for acquiring (typically pre-existing) datasets on demand. you'll be able to make a quick buck here if you have differentiated access to specific datasets or populations.
least sustainable - given that many of these plays are based on monetising a limited set of data, not on the ability to generate more data over time.

More drugmakers are moving early-stage clinical trials to China, but questions remain over safety and transparency. Now the FDA plans to increase oversight of those foreign studies.
Our CEO @jrkelly told @business the added scrutiny could “change the calculus” for pharma companies weighing where to run their studies.
China’s speed advantage starts before the clinic. We are building autonomous labs so U.S. scientists can run more experiments, faster, at home.

Take Mithril Medicine, the one-person company acquired by @AnthropicAI.
No lab, no CapEx. It rented its experiments from outside CROs, and had a molecule designed and validated early on nothing but an idea.
Then it exited to big pharma, the "app store" of this ecosystem.

And if this works, it won't stop at drugs that need clinical trials.
Beauty and materials don't need them. Arcaea, a Ginkgo spinout, just launched “mesbeauty” with Jennifer Lawrence, a biodesigned haircare brand, straight to consumers with no app store in between.

Grok Bot

There’s a really pronounced divide between people who are on the AI side of things and people who are on the biology side of things. Even among people working in AI, the divide persists based on where they’re focused.
The AI side, adherents of scaling laws and the bitter lesson, believe that AI getting better means AI being more capable of novel discoveries in medicine (that go beyond discovering new drugs in well understood targets or speeding up dry lab work etc).
The biology people think the idea of a bitter lesson in biology is kind of ridiculous and that regardless of AI’s capabilities it’s going to be at least 5-10 years until you could hope to reliably simulate human toxicology in silico (right now AI/ML can’t even reliably simulate in vivo studies like binding affinities or functional assays).
Even the most AI pilled of them, who will list all the areas that AI can reduce the time spent on various areas, don’t think the concept of AI discovering novel targets or generating new understanding of causal biology is realistic in the near term. Most, in fact, will readily characterize the assumption that even an “ASI” level model could find cures hidden in our current understanding (without expanding that understanding with significantly more biological data) as patently false.
This was a big part of why we wanted to experience it ourselves by using AI for a (very) small portion of what it can do in biology. It was both mind blowing and revealed some poignant insights into how different the problem of making AI better at something like coding is to the problems of biology.
Even if it unlocked the ability to generate new molecules at a stunning pace, its simulation (in silico) of binding only had 49% accuracy. And if we wanted to improve that, we’d need to feed it back the data from the lab - data that took about 30x as long to get as it took to generate the molecules. And these were tests in a test tube (turn of phrase), imagine how long it would take if we wanted to improve the model with data that required recruiting humans and monitoring their reactions.
Human biology is very complex, and adding a drug - especially a novel drug and doubly so for a novel drug acting on a novel mechanism - means mapping interactions that have nth-order-effects that we don’t have the data to predict. Virtual cells have made advancements enabled by AI, but the perturbations equate to a small fraction of the possible.
This is before you even get into curing disease, especially uniquely human diseases. Brain function involves cellular identities that are unique to humans, meaning animal studies are of little use.
How long does it take to understand what the side effects of chronic administration of a drug in humans are? AI can speed up analyzing the data, or designing the trial or even getting it approved…but it can’t make a 6 month trial complete in 3 months.
I think its important to point out that significant advancements can be made in AI that contribute to biology, while also being realistic about how much it speeds up something as complex as curing a specific cancer or diseases of the brain.

Most people who dream of a quiet life without work are just exhausted from work they hate. The reason you get bored on vacation after a week is that you are meant to move, pursue something exciting, and engage your body and mind in something useful. Do whatever it takes to find work that energizes you. It may take years, but it will have the most meaningful effect on your quality of life.
