Now is a good time to change passwords that you've reused or that have appeared in data breaches, get a password manager, turn on 2FA with an authenticator app, and turn on automatic updates. This weekend. Carve out some time and do it today.

this is a really good video from @sqs on what it looks like to build ai native software using ai in the ai age with a small team (and a lot of tokens) youtube.com/watch?v=kQguG4YS… - I cannot recommend it enough

It's extraordinary that on this website I've seen endless commentary, report and polls on how compelling a certain architectural style will save British housing, and virtually nothing on actually reforming the planning system.
I'm in @WorksInProgMag's letters section this week, arguing that British YIMBYism's preoccupation with beauty is a massive waste of time and resources. Beauty is marginal. There are bigger problems to solve in British housing—they're just all a bit less sexy.

Here's my advice for effective altruists. Your main problem is you are politically ineffective, and too committed to groupthink and ideological purity to become effective. And worse still, you think too highly of yourselves to realize that this is the case.

Americans are concerned about AI, hate data centers, and hate Trump, who has loudly embraced the industry over and over again. So, naturally, the electorate is ... <squints> <squints harder> ... R+2 on artificial intelligence

“Mechanistic interpretability but for women” is cracking me up
I’ve always been confused by the female experience. I hear what they say, and can conceptually understand what they describe, but I have never been able to internalize the experience myself. Seeing Kate’s biodata has started to make her more legible to me. It’s kind of how we’re trying to understand AI, a field called mechanistic interpretability where you take a black box and find the underlying circuits that explain the behavior. Bridging this gap in understanding could unlock far more empathy, cooperation, and alignment. Remarkably, it seems after 40 days of behavioral consistency (sleep, diet, exercise), her erratic hormonal swings lessened by more than 30% and stabilized.

Cool connection: The same trams run in both Melbourne (right) and San Francisco (left). The state government of Victoria donated the 1946 tram to the city of San Francisco in 2009. SF Ferry Building (left) , Melbourne Flinders Street Station (right). Both waterfront clocktowers

People have no idea how bad traffic will get once AVs are widespread. On top of the induced demand from not having to drive, we'll have cars wandering around looking for parking. Cheap and comfortable AVs means more traffic. AVs are amazing but they'll never displace the train.
My prediction is parking lots in city centers will start disappearing. No need for them when your car can drop you off. It will free up a tremendous amount of urban real estate and make cities much nicer.

The AI enthusiasm of @MattBruenig seems pretty clearly to me like the “correct” line based on the stated precepts of left politics and it’s fascinating that almost nobody on the left follows that trajectory. mattbruenig.com/2026/08/31/m…

people don't like it when you build things, and they don't like the technology sector. today for the MTS newsletter, I wrote about the unlucky intersection of those two preferences, and what it means that the most significant technology of my lifetime depends on it. mtslive.substack.com/p/popul…

I'm intrigued by this moment where in, in which we're pretending like NIMBYs are actually motivated by really sophisticated views on aesthetics or urban design. I know that ST folks usually haven't, but have newer YIMBYs just never been to a housing public hearing?
Many NIMBYs don't hate all density. They hate the ugliness that comes from sudden densification.
