Trump had 4 opportunities to endorse Netanyahu but refrained. Why now? Closer to election has more impact. But was there a quid pro quo? Indeed for better/worse, Bibi is his partner in Iran fiasco. Not to endorse him if Trump is thinking of hitting Iran hard soon makes no sense.

יש כאן שתי אפשרויות שצריך לבחון:
א. טראמפ מעוניין לתקוף שוב באיראן, אבל אינו רוצה לעשות זאת לבדו. לכן הוא מבקש להבטיח שישראל תצטרף לארצות הברית במערכה נוספת.
ב. נתניהו מעוניין במערכה נוספת מול איראן, ובמקביל זקוק לתמיכתו הפוליטית של טראמפ לקראת הבחירות הגורליות מבחינתו.
אם מחברים את שתי האפשרויות הללו, עולה השאלה האם נתניהו הבטיח לטראמפ שישראל תצטרף למתקפה אמריקאית נוספת נגד איראן בתמורה לתמיכתו הפוליטית.
אם אכן ניתנה התחייבות כזאת, הרי שכל החלטה עתידית על יציאה למערכה נוספת מול איראן תחייב בחינה לא רק של השיקולים הביטחוניים, אלא גם של ההתחייבויות הפוליטיות האפשריות שנתניהו נתן לטראמפ.
אבל דווקא משום שהמחיר של מערכה נוספת מול איראן עלול להיות כבד, השאלה הזאת מחייבת בירור. אסור שהחלטה על מלחמה נוספת עם איראן תתקבל על בסיס שיקולים פוליטים במקום על בסיס צורך ביטחוני אמיתי.
כאמור, מדובר בניתוח נסיבתי של הציוץ של טראמפ, ולא במידע מבוסס על מה שהתרחש מאחורי הקלעים. ועדיין, קשה להתעלם מהאפשרות שזה בדיוק מה שקרה: נתניהו הבטיח לטראמפ שישראל תצטרף למערכה נוספת מול איראן, ובתמורה ביקש להבטיח את תמיכתו הפוליטית לקראת הבחירות.
