THIS WAS the moment overzealous policemen without uniforms pounced on a handful of unarmed picketers, mindlessly grabbing anyone in sight including our reporter Ode Francis. The manhandling of Ode and the activists was lawless, unwarranted and primitive. Besides innocent persons like our reporter Ode falling victim, such barbaric swoops by rogue, unidentified, so-called ‘plainclothes police’ on protesters or picketers violate the law and the Constitution. @NPSOfficial_KE @InteriorKE STOP IT.

Across Nairobi’s informal settlements, many human-rights violations never reach courtrooms or official records. Young people report harassment, arbitrary arrests, false accusations and questionable charges, yet some cases end with small fines or are abandoned because pursuing justice is costly and disruptive.
𝗛𝗔𝗞𝗜 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝘀, a digital platform for documenting human-rights violations and supporting grassroots Human Rights Defenders, is helping bring these hidden experiences into focus. Through community-based documentation, the Social Justice Centres Working Group can identify patterns that conventional justice statistics may miss.
The platform highlights a critical justice gap: the absence of a court case does not necessarily mean the absence of a violation. Economic hardship, limited legal support and lack of accessible justice pathways can force survivors to move on without accountability.
𝗛𝗔𝗞𝗜 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝘀 is therefore about more than data. It is about making hidden violations visible, strengthening community evidence and building pathways to justice.

On Monday our team together with community members, @IJMKenya and police officers, joined hands to renovate Mukuru Police Post cells through painting and floor repairs. The initiative was a collaborative effort to improve the condition of the cells, strengthen relationships between the police and the community, and create space for constructive dialogue on building a safer and more secure Mukuru.
At MCJC we believe that community safety is built through collaboration, mutual trust, accountability and respect for human rights. By working together, we can foster a community where everyone feels safe, their dignity is upheld and human rights violations are prevented.Together let’s build trust, strengthen accountability and create a Mukuru free from human rights violations.

On 10 August 2026, we brought together representatives from the National Police Service (NPS), IPOA, state institutions, civil society, the media, academia and other key stakeholders for the National Multi-Stakeholder Convening on Political Goonism and Hired Violence, convened in partnership with CHRIPS.
The convening examined the drivers, networks and structures that sustain political goonism and hired violence in Kenya, and what needs to be done to prevent violence ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
It was agreed: Kenya must move from reacting to violence after it occurs to preventing it before it happens. This means strengthening early warning, improving coordination, pursuing those who organise and finance violence, protecting victims and witnesses, engaging communities and political parties, and ensuring that institutional commitments translate into action.
Yet, we continue to see the persistence of political goonism and the risks it poses to peaceful political and civic participation.
The question, therefore, is not whether we know what needs to be done. It is whether we will act and act early.
The convening identified 10 immediate priorities to guide coordinated action:
1. Establish the coordination mechanism with designated focal persons from key institutions.
2. Map high-risk areas using existing research, police information, civil society documentation and community intelligence.
3. Develop an early-warning framework with clear channels for reporting, verification and escalation.
4. Strengthen investigations into organisers, financiers and recruiters behind political violence.
5. Revitalise community policing and Nyumba Kumi structures in identified high-risk areas.
6. Engage political parties and secure public commitments against hired violence.
7. Strengthen victim and witness protection and referral mechanisms.
8. Develop a common documentation protocol for civil society, media and state institutions.
9. Scale youth prevention interventions in high-risk communities.
10. Establish a public accountability dashboard to track institutional commitments.
These are immediate priorities requiring coordinated implementation.
As Kenya approaches the 2027 General Elections, the goal must be clear: citizens should be able to participate in political and civic life without fear, intimidation or violence.
END GOONISM NOW!

Comrade Otieno Ombok, the community representative who has been at the forefront of the Access to Information campaign against the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NUPEA), was arrested on Tuesday morning while making a solidarity court appearance.
Mr. Ombok is currently being held without any formal charge, and the reasons for his arrest remain unknown to his legal representatives and family.
This development comes less than 48 hours after a delegation led by Mr. Ombok met with the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ) in Kisumu to push for accountability and transparency regarding NUPEA’s proposed nuclear energy project in Central Sakwa Ward, Siaya County.

STATEMENT
To commemorate the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, observed annually on 30th
August, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (@HakiKNCHR ) unequivocally condemns enforced disappearance in all its forms and calls for an immediate end to abductions, secret detention and other forms of unacknowledged deprivation of liberty in Kenya.
Enforced disappearance constitutes a grave violation of fundamental human rights. It places individuals outside the protection of the law and violates, among others, the rights to life, liberty and security of the person, human dignity and freedom from torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. It also inflicts profound and continuing suffering on families who are denied information concerning the whereabouts and fate of their loved ones.
