Honoured to have welcomed @MamaRachelRuto at our NetZero Embassy today. #BelgiumGoesGreen
The net-zero diplomatic mission by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Nairobi sets a bold benchmark for sustainable development.
We acknowledge and commend this mission as the first net-zero embassy in Kenya, and the first Belgian embassy globally to operate at net-zero energy and emissions—an important milestone in climate leadership.
By integrating clean energy, water recycling, and circular systems into its daily operations, it shows that sustainability can be practical, visible, and measurable.
With Kenya’s strong renewable energy base, such models can be replicated to accelerate our transition to a greener, more resilient future.

(EN) Any suggestion that Belgium is antisemitic is false, offensive, and unacceptable. Belgium condemns antisemitism with the greatest firmness. The fight against antisemitism, and all forms of hatred and discrimination, is an absolute priority for our country.
Everyone must be able to practice their faith without fear of violence, discrimination, or persecution. This is a cornerstone of our rule of law. It's not negotiable.
Belgian law permits ritual circumcision when performed by a qualified physician under strict health and safety standards. The specific case referenced is subject to a judicial investigation. I refrain from commenting on ongoing proceedings.
Labeling Belgium as antisemitic is not just wrong, it's dangerous disinformation that undermines the real fight against hatred.
About the statements made by the U.S. Ambassador @BillWhiteUSA: they are unacceptable.
An ambassador accredited to Belgium has a responsibility to respect our institutions, our elected representatives, and the independence of our judicial system. Personal attacks against a Belgian minister and interference in judicial matters violate basic diplomatic norms.
The Ambassador has been immediately summoned for a meeting this Tuesday.
Belgium welcomes dialogue with all partners. But interference in our democratic institutions and false accusations cross a line that cannot be crossed. Respect for sovereignty works both ways.

Kenya and Belgium @BelgiuminKenya today signed an Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation (DTA) at the National Treasury Building , marking an important step in the deepening of bilateral economic and investment relations between the two nations.
The DTA agreement was signed by the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury Hon. FCPA John Mbadi @Johnmbadi, on behalf of the Republic of Kenya, and by Belgium’s Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Peter Maddens, (@pmaddens) on behalf of the Kingdom of Belgium
In his remarks, CS Mbadi underscored the importance of the DTA as a modern framework designed to provide predictability and fairness in the taxation of cross border income, eliminate risks of double taxation, and curb tax evasion. He noted that the Agreement would not only establish a more transparent tax environment but also stimulate bilateral investment flows while further consolidating the enduring friendship between Kenya and Belgium.
The signing builds on the momentum of the 2024 Kenya-Belgium Political Consultations in Brussels, during which both countries reaffirmed their commitment to broaden cooperation in trade and investment. Hon Mbadi highlighted Kenya’s economic resilience, with nominal GDP of USD 121.3 billion in 2024, supported by prudent macroeconomic management, a diversified production base, and a robust services sector. He further cited Kenya’s strategic location as a regional hub and its skilled human capital as unmatched advantages for investors seeking entry into Sub-Saharan Africa.
Ambassador @pmaddens, in turn, described the Agreement as a strategic achievement that fills a critical gap in the diplomatic and economic architecture between the two nations. He emphasized that Belgium views Kenya’s flourishing economy as a leading investment destination on the continent, with compelling opportunities in sectors such as horticulture, manufacturing, renewable energy, and ICT.
The DTA is expected to strengthen economic cooperation, enhance investor confidence, and chart a new chapter in the Kenya-Belgium partnership.

This year’s #WorldEnvironmentDay , we had the great honor of being hosted by Ambassador @pmaddens and his spouse at the Embassy and Residence of @BelgiuminKenya for a tour of sustainability in action.
The embassy has achieved net zero status through a range of innovative, sustainable solutions and now it serves as a demo site to encourage ripple effect:
1.Strategic placement of solar panels including on parking sheds powers the entire facility.
2. A comprehensive system captures and utilizes rainwater across the compound.
3. Efficient wastewater treatment technology ensures that wastewater is treated and reused sustainably.
4. There is deployment of biogas digester that uses Kitchen waste and transforms it into clean cooking gas used in the residence.
5 . Vertical gardens that grow a variety of fresh vegetables on the site.
This was truly the best way to celebrate World Environment Day learning how bold leadership and practical innovation can make sustainability a lived reality. Thank you Amb @pmaddens , for your hospitality and inspiration.
