Around 20,000 IDBI Bank employees cleared the IBPS exams to join a government-backed bank. Now, the Modi government has approved the sale of a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank to Canada's Fairfax Financial Holdings for ₹52,878 crore.
The government and LIC will retain a combined 34% stake after the deal. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals.
For employees who chose this bank believing they were joining a government backed institution, this change raises important questions about job security, service conditions and their future.
Foreign investment may bring capital, but the Modi government must also address the concerns of the employees affected by its privatisation decisions.
