Let me add that if your goal is to accurately understand the world, then it is a privilege when smart folks on your team explain things to you. It is really a shame that the richest man in the world is too insecure to enjoy this aspect of leading a large team of smart people.

Tech layoffs are a reminder that the US H1B system badly needs reform. Employees who helped build widely used and valued products deserve better than to scramble for a job or need to leave. Grace periods should be extended and the time to green cards should be much faster.

Anyone who writes code in 2022 should know Leslie Lamport and the ideas he developed. The are among the most profound I've encountered in any field (see screenshot)
The usual way of obtaining scientific publications by DOI when you don't have institutional access works too btw

ALT A screenshot of (part of) the table of contents of the Lamport book. Text flows: Introduction 1 Dahlia Malkhi, Idit Keidar Chapter 1: Shared Memory and the Bakery Algorithm 3 Chapter 2: The Notions of Time and Global State in a Distributed System 5 Chapter 3: Byzantine Faults 7 Chapter 4: State Machine Replication with Benign Failures 9 Chapter 5: Formal Specification and Verification 10 Chapter 6: Biography 11 Closing Remarks 12
I missed this book of Lamport’s papers when it came out a few years ago. A reminder that based on your ACM membership, you may be able to download the book for free.

The impact of technical debt on overall velocity is much different though within a monorepo than a multirepo set up, as are who pays the cost of various teams’ development shortcuts. There’s no hiding code in a monorepo if it has any dependencies. Most people don’t get that.

They approached the CMS as a tool for their newsroom team, and that meant listening to them and watching them and working with those writers and editors to figure out not just what frustrated them but what they were *trying to accomplish*, under what circumstances.

Baked into the discussion of student debt is the idea that the function of education is to prepare someone to work, that it is a ticket for the ride of employment. This is a dangerously toxic notion that deserves no respect. Education is learning, literally anything.

I love that all of the VCs, accelerators, and incubators in this space are seemingly dead. I find that comforting. It’s an indicator that the hype train smashed into a brick wall a few miles ago.
