Steve Kerr says Roger Federer taught his Warriors team the secret to sustained success wasn’t outworking everyone, it was building a life around your craft you never want to escape from
“I’ll tell you a great story about Roger Federer. We were playing in China with the Warriors in 2017. Roger was in Shanghai for the Masters tournament, so we invited him to come speak to the team.”
“Draymond Green asked him, ‘How do you sustain success? How have you managed to win majors 20 years after you first won one?’ Everyone was expecting him to say, ‘I work harder than everybody,’ the will, all the clichés.”
“Roger Federer says, ‘I get up every morning and I make breakfast for my kids. Then I take them to school and drop them off. Then I go practice tennis for about two hours, and I’ve figured out a really good routine where I don’t destroy my body, but I can get all the work in I need.”
“‘Then I go have lunch with my wife. In the evening, we cook dinner together. The kids are all home from school. We ask them about school. There’s so much joy in the house. We put them to bed, and then I put my head on the pillow and go, “Man, that was just a great day.” And I’ve been doing that for 20 years.’”
“And it was like, yes. That’s it. That’s the formula. That’s what leads to sustained success. He loves tennis. He loves his family. He loves life. It’s not outworking everybody and banging your head against the wall, ‘I’m going to be better than everybody.’ It’s allowing your natural talent to shine through with a work ethic, with a great family life, with perspective, with peace, with mindfulness.”
“It’s perspective. It’s joy. It’s passion. It’s mindfulness. It’s an awareness that we are truly lucky. To get the most out of ourselves, it’s our daily rituals and experiences and love and joy.”
Logical advice. But also a great reminder of how men and women play by very different rules at work sometimes.
These are all good points. We got lucky in our last transaction when the agent made offers due the week of Thanksgiving. There was only one other competing offer. (This was still a different time than the madness of right now)
Buying a home in San Francisco:
Are you able to pay the highest price among bidders for this asset, likely in cash in possibly the richest city the world?
Or
Is there a way to circumvent competition so you're not bidding against a whole city of freshly minted millionaires?
There’s no third way! Either pay the highest price for a home in the history of homes or find a way to avoid competition
There a lot of ways to avoid competition. The most common is to find a home that aligns with what *you uniquely need* but for some reason doesn't align with the largest segment of buyers. If you want the home that appeals to everyone, you have to outbid everyone
The second most common way to avoid competition is to know about the home slightly before the rest of the market. To have some informational advantage
A third is to have some unique lens about about what to do with the home that others don't see (very hard for a traditional homebuyer, more common for investor / flippers)
A fourth is when the seller or their agent makes some serious mistake in marketing the home. This is not uncommon in San Francisco, especially if the seller uses an out of town agent or lists it when many home buyers are on vacation. It almost never happens if the listing agent has a 415 phone number however. If the area code is 925, 510, 650, 707 there is about a 20% chance
Home buyers often fixate on whether they like the home or not, which is of course worth considering but you also have to win the home
The thing to truly fixate on is whether you want to pay up or find a way to avoid competition

"the only universal skill is the ability to roll with the changes." Even outside of AI, this is probably the most important skill one should try to build to improve quality of life overall.
Simon Willison breaks down why using AI coding agents is a masterclass in software engineering. He tells Lenny Rachitsky that it takes every inch of his 25 years of experience to get it right. Hear his "state of the union" on Lenny’s Podcast! 💻

As a doctor whose wife experienced 4 miscarriages amongst the 3, now healthy adult children we have raised, I can’t stop thinking about @JDVance’s answers on abortion during the VP debate. Here is the problem with his and Trump’s “leave it to the states” approach. 1/13

my 84 year old auntie called me to ask "who the fine white man was at the DNC because he seems like he could've really been good for America". I choked back my laughter real bad and told her softly, "he was great for America. And Black women loved him".
She asked for his name and like clockwork I replied, "Grant. Fitzgerald Grant, I believe". She said, "damn, his name even SOUNDS important" and then she let out a Baptist MMMmmmmMmm. told her somebody tried to kill him once. then I stopped because I could barely breathe at this point and she started damning them to hell intently.
and I don't know if she'll ever find out, but I haven't laughed that hard in months after she hung up. I know I'm wrong. But, I did it for US. I did it for the United States of America.

1/4 Not sure who this may help or bring comfort to, but I wanted to share this: In July 2018 outside a Sacramento, California, DMV office, I met Tyré Nichols. He had been waiting 6+ hours in miserable 98-degree heat...
😭♥️
Extremely true. Though I also think writing skills play a big role too. Your manager needs to take all your accomplishments and craft a story that makes the reader believe there is no other logical outcome besides promotion. Same goes for awards.

So you're saying no one is responding to support powered by Zendesk or answering your phone number, but DM'ing on Instagram is going to work? 🤔 Ok here we go. @mujiusa
Has anyone recently ordered from @mujiusa and received it? I put in an order over a month ago and it hasn't shipped yet. Every email and call to customer service goes unanswered. Are they still around?

"Housework and child care, the research found, have much less of an impact on men’s mental health. That’s probably because they do so much less of it."
In countries around the world, women do more unpaid household labor than men. And the more of this labor they do, the worse their mental health, new research has found. nyti.ms/3y0LDCv
My 6yo asked me if there's a volcano in the middle of every city. I'd love to live in her world for a day and see everything the way she does right now.
