Riaz Hamidullah is a diplomat with a difference. He reached out to people in a way few envoys have. Sadly his tenure, in very trying times, has been short. He will be missed by the countless friends that he made. Bon voyage High Commissioner
#WATCH | Delhi: On the memories from his tenure in India, Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, says, "About three weeks ago, I was in the Kashmir Valley in Srinagar. From the airport, I drove straight to the DPS Srinagar school. Two things struck me. There were around 5,000 students, and I think almost 40 per cent of them were girls. Suddenly, I was approached by a Class 12 student called Fatima. She introduced herself as a radio jockey. I was surprised to learn that the school has been running a digital radio station. She took me into a radio studio and got into a conversation with me. The second question was really puzzling. I didn’t expect it from her. She asked me, “How do you look at borders?” Imagine — sitting in Srinagar, a young girl asking this question. I took it in absolute candour and gave my response, and when I was leaving, I heard young children singing a song. It was one of my favourite compositions of Allama Iqbal... So, what really struck me is that we always look at the lines that divide us, but we should also see how uniquely the larger part of the population keeps moving, without being mindful of the divisive lines or differences. That is one of the latest memories that will stay with me."
Isn't that a concern?

"It’s how people use the technology that’s the important thing. You put the technology out there and it can be used for ill or for good. And if they use it for good, I’m very happy. And if they use it for bad, I feel badly about it. But that’s the way life works. Technology is morally neutral; it’s how we use technology that determines everything."
In his Nobel Prize interview, chemistry laureate John Goodenough spoke about technology and the responsibility we all have to use it wisely.

I was invited to address the @UN Security Council this afternoon to discuss the unprecedented threat posed by uncontrolled frontier AI agents.
Humanity has summoned the courage and wisdom to manage catastrophic risks before. This is one of those moments, far bigger than any personal, commercial, or national interest. The choices we make about this technology today will shape generations to come. We must act now.

Actually you are opening the door for so much of research!
My Sunday #Substack column S4 today is on the impact of AI in the future of Science as the #NobelPrizeDialogueSeoul2026 happened today and deliberated on this. Where do epistemic values stand with AI as compared to science?

Such a pertinent speech. The reality of our times and the need to optimally build our strengths across sectors as forces on both sides make our journey challenging.
#WATCH | Delhi: At “Financing India’s Journey towards Viksit Bharat” Conference, Founder of Kotak Mahindra Bank, Uday Kotak says, "The world today reminds me of India long time ago. The way some of the players in the world are behaving reminds me of the East India Company...I see a lot of comparisons today. If you look at the technology companies from the West and each of us with our mobiles, our Instagrams, our WhatsApps, our Googles and everything else. We have been used to a particular use of technology in our lives. We are seeing the kind of power these technology companies have developed as private businesses with significant challenges to the sovereignty of nations. We have seen similar issues by sovereigns - the speed with which Venezuela offered its oil reserves at the disposal of the United States. We have seen the statements with reference to the Strait of Hormuz where it is now becoming mercantilist, where there will be a rate and a card which will be paid for use of the Strait. And the powerful leaders around the world are talking about sharing of revenue. We're looking at the other side, the East: a similar domination happening in trade. The kind of trade surpluses China is creating today is mind-blowing, and the level of trading dominance it is having, even with our country, is truly astounding and their surpluses from India keep on growing. So, you have two superpowers out there, and the world's rules have changed; it's not a benign place and in this context, I think time has come, and I'm glad Finance Minister you got the states here with you to think about this as One India. The more we get together and make ourselves a single nation, the more we will be able to withstand the challenges that face the world at large, and India too will have to meet those challenges. We are doing admirably; our position on the global stage is pretty good, but there is a long way for us to grow."
#ZubeenGarg lives on in the hearts of millions. So glad that you could meet him and always admired what he stood for.
A year back, this day, #Assam #India lost a gifted - humane 'son of the soil, #ZubeenGarg.
I had just an hr-long interaction with him, in #Guwahati. Candid, spontaneous. We connected, deeply.
Yes, it's not usual for a visiting Ambassador to reach out to a musician. Zubeen was unsure 'why' a diplomat was trying to meet him! I had to make efforts to get him agree to meet.
After I left him that night, was delighted that I could meet him: as much as we spoke about #music, he also shared his mind about empathy for #people | #nature.
I remember this day for I lost an unusual friend, one who also felt the rhythm of #Bangladesh.
I join millions, in silence, remembering my dear friend.
