During the recent protests and the earlier CJP protests, many women complained of being pinched near their breasts and on their forearms, and of being touched on their breasts and backs in ways that appears as sexual assault.
Many of these incidents appear deliberate. In one video, a male police officer was seen jumping towards Neha Bora and appearing to grope her breasts.
Not only this, some women were detained after 6 pm and released on the outskirts of the city risking their safety. When the Delhi Police manual states that male police officers should approach female protesters only in extremely necessary situations, what makes such conduct acceptable?
Unfortunately, governments have used such tactics in the past, and they continue to be used to discourage women from participating in political protests and push them back within the four walls of their homes.
Such tactics stem from sexism. They weaponise it against women, using sexual humiliation and harassment to shame them, intimidate them, and drive them out of public spaces.
