The affluent lifestyles, expensive cars and sheer opulence they enjoy. Yet, we are all expected to accept a “hard reset” and “endure” for the sake of the long term. There are always resources for all these nonsense. Zero sincerity of purpose! Oya nau.

You know… When I hear how some people try to overfixate on “reforms”, “reforms”… “ehn, change from the old order”, “this hasn’t happened before”, “this is the best thing after jollof rice”, I just laugh and shake my head. It is true that some tough and much-needed policies have been implemented. And yes, some credit should be given for the political will to take decisions that previous administrations struggled to make. But you will not pretend that there have not been trade-offs, or that Nigerians are not paying dearly for some of these decisions. Let us look at a few things. 1. Fuel subsidy removal • Subsidy was removed, reducing a major fiscal distortion. That is a +1. • But the cost of living has been brutal, with households bearing a significant part of the adjustment. That is a -1. What has been the net gain? How much of the fiscal savings has translated into productive investment, better public services and improved living standards? ————— 2. Foreign exchange market • The FX market has become considerably more stable. That is a +1. • But businesses are contending with extremely high interest rates, which increase their cost of capital, erode profitability and constrain investment. That is a -1. What is the net gain? Beyond stabilising the exchange rate, what progress are we making in creating an environment where businesses can actually thrive? ————— 3. Oil and gas sector • Local oil majors have been ramping up production and expanding capacity. That is a +1. • But some IOCs have been exiting certain asset categories, raising questions about the attractiveness of Nigeria’s operating environment and the sustainability of investment in the sector. That is a -1. What is the net progress? Are we seeing higher aggregate production, more investment and improved operational efficiency across the industry? ————— 4. Government revenue • Revenue across all tiers of government has expanded significantly. Another +1. • But a substantial portion of government revenue is still absorbed by debt servicing, leaving limited fiscal space for infrastructure, healthcare, education and other productive expenditure. That is a -1. Again, what is the net progress? Is the improvement in revenue translating into better fiscal outcomes and improved public welfare? ————— My point is simple. You cannot selectively highlight the positives while glossing over the costs and unintended consequences. Equally, you cannot dismiss the reforms simply because they have come with painful adjustments. Both sides of the equation matter. Some of these costs may be transitional, and some reforms may take years to deliver their full benefits. But that makes it even more important to examine what is being done to ensure that the intended benefits eventually materialise. When you want to talk about economic progress, talk about the net progress. Look beyond the policy announcements and the headlines. Examine the actual outcomes. Are we becoming more productive? Are businesses becoming more competitive? Are households better off? Is the economy creating more opportunities? Are we building a more sustainable fiscal position? Ultimately, the objective of economic reforms is not to win an award for implementing difficult policies. It is to make the economy work better and improve the welfare of its people. That is when I know that value has actually been added.

For decades, surgery departments often had Grand Rounds on Saturday mornings. Everyone was expected to attend, so that meant almost no weekends off. Over time, these moved to weekdays but it took the enactment of duty hour limits in 2003 to get rid of the last holdouts. 🧐

Our teaching hospitals are able to do this. May not be efficient but able to
How many hospitals in Nigeria can assemble a surgical team within 30 minutes at 2 a.m. to manage a life threatening stab wound to the neck? Such an emergency may require immediate resuscitation, experienced surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre nurses, blood transfusion services and a functional operating theatre. While healthcare workers must remain accountable for the quality of care they provide, we must also acknowledge the challenges of inadequate manpower, infrastructure and emergency preparedness. Improving emergency care requires investment, better organisation, training and accountability at every level. We need to move beyond blaming individuals and focus on building systems that can save lives, 24 hours a day. #governance #emergency #nigeria

You might have heard it many times. I am telling you again. Equity investing, especially for retail investors, is not a game or some test run. You are investing in businesses. Although your current invested capital may not be high enough, the idea is that you consistently deploy funds in the market over time, whilst you enjoy higher returns. Of course, there is volatility. There are risks, and that is consistent with the potential returns. This is why there are certain criteria to be ticked before entering the market. If you are young, with stable and/or rising income, and low liquidity needs, you may want to seriously consider stocks. That said, I know it is very sweet when you see individual stocks doing strong returns. Say 20%, 30%, 2x, 3x. The temptation is to look at those returns and begin to think that is what you should be earning on your investments. But those trends are very unusual and they are hardly repeatable. The cycle between FY 2024 and FY 2026 is an adjustment period. We won’t see it every day. Post-COVID, the NGX has compounded at 36% every year on average. So if you want to have a fair sense of the returns to expect from stocks, you can work with the 30% historical return, and also have in mind that the future can be wildly different. The point here is that you should not build your expectations around the returns of a few individual stocks, especially during an unusual market cycle. There will be periods of strong returns, periods of weak returns, and periods when the market does practically nothing. This is also why I think retail investors should not obsess about a particular stock. Just stay disciplined and buy equity mutual funds. You can consistently deploy funds into the market without having to worry about which individual stock will deliver the next 2x or 3x. Those who do individual stocks expect to get rewarded for their research and extra efforts. They also do not mind taking directional risks. You may not have that capacity. And you really do not have to take those risks to participate in the equity market.
