R.D. Burman created the artificial sound of a running train in the song by rubbing pieces of sandpaper together (along with bamboo sticks).
The melody is tuned in Raag Durga.
Zamane ko dikhana hai 1981
Padmini Kolhapure and Rishi Kapoor perform the song while riding on the roof of a train, making it one of the early iconic Bollywood train-top musical sequences (predating later examples like Dil Se's "Chaiyya Chaiyya").
While the soundtrack sung by Shailendra Singh was a massive chartbuster, the movie itself was a box office failure. Rishi Kapoor later reflected that the movie flopped because it lacked a strong storyline, relying too heavily on a string of great music videos laced together over an outdated formula.
Nasir Hussain's son, Mansoor Khan (who later directed massive hits like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar), had just returned from studying abroad and was put in charge of managing the innovative disco lighting and tech setups for this movie.

If you're feeling jaded about democracy, I recommend spending less time watching me on cable news and more time talking with 20-year-olds.
The best part about teaching Econ 101 this semester is being reminded that we have a smart, engaged generation getting ready to make an impact.

The strongest argument I’ve ever heard in defence of patriarchy is the hot chapati. Someone has to keep making them while everyone else eats, and that someone is rarely the man demanding another.
But what happens when you draw a line between rice-eating and roti-eating India? The Census, economists and several decades of research start telling a rather curious story.
Introducing Rotinomics: where a humble flatbread finds itself accused of being an accessory to patriarchy.

It is getting to be this way--no walks in the wood The tress have all been cut..

ALT An Old-Fashioned Song by John Hollander: No more walks in the wood: The trees have all been cut Down, and where once they stood Not even a wagon rut Appears along the path Low brush is taking over. No more walks in the wood; This is the aftermath Of afternoons in the clover Fields where we once made love Then wandered home together Where the trees arched above, Where we made our own weather When branches were the sky. Now they are gone for good, And you, for ill, and I Am only a passer-by. We and the trees and the way Back from the fields of play Lasted as long as we could. No more walks in the wood.

The fact that the CDC can tweet about respiratory illnesses for pregnant women and not use the word “vaccine” is public health malpractice. Pregnant women should rely on advice from their obstetrician, not CDC or HHS.
If you’re pregnant, changes in the immune system, heart, and lungs during pregnancy can make you more sick from respiratory diseases. There can also be harmful effects for your baby. Knowing that pregnancy increases your risk for severe illness from respiratory diseases can help you make informed choices for you and your baby this fall and winter. Simply put 🚨 Javier Milei & Marco Rubio collaborated to exfiltrate Brazil’s most high-profile criminal from grave charges of large-scale corruption and electoral fraud. This is the true function of the Reactionary International, working across borders to corrode our democracies.

Nice, smart review of @weinbergersa's Valley of Death in 10/8 Nature. She details the childhood & adulthood of the Pentagon-Silicon complex, i.e., war moving from the hands of the govt to the hands of the tech bros. Yay. nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

“It’s the only class I took at Harvard where people would call each other out for not having done the reading.”
Harvard students are lining up to take Hum 10:
“Applications (essays required) shot up 40% this fall with 180 incoming freshmen vying for 90 spots.”
“The class is definitely not for padding the GPA. Students read a hefty book a week and write regular essays. There is no pass/fail option. Digital devices are verboten, and attendance is taken in every lecture (pink slips for those who arrive late).”
“In their applications and in interviews, students expressed the urge to be forced to tackle classics they otherwise wouldn’t read, the need to combat frayed attention spans and the desire for an antidote to The Machine. Several mentioned with disdain that people who aren’t in the class wondered why they didn’t ‘just Chat the books,’ i.e., use AI.”

So let me get this right: if you’re a corrupt right-wing leader who loses an election and is under investigation you get asylum?
If you’re a mom and kid fleeing violence you’re not?

Google has specifically prevented its AI tool from telling users who won the 2020 presidential election, even though it happily tells us that Trump won in 2016 and 2024. This sort of political intervention into LLM responses is deeply problematic. (h/t to Charles Mann)
