“Pregnancy FELT like a death sentence TO ME” Nigerian men who have never even menstruated: you’re a vile woman. God will punish you. God will make you barren. You’re a liar. You can exaggerate. Pregnancy is not a death sentence. Idiots.

She’s not daft. She’s a woman with experience on Pregnancy. I respect him as a gynecologist, but he still has limit…& that’s the sincere truth. He can educate on what best practices on the issue is, but he can’t tell her about the experience. That’s why we as physicians are trained to listen to our patients. If his Patient tells him, “Pregnancy is a death statement”. His response should be, “Tell me More…”. Not “Pregnancy is not a death statement.” Also, because medicine is not a finite knowledge, we medical practitioners keep learning and updating research and knowledge by listening to people experiencing it, not arguing semantics or teaching them English.

Meanwhile @drifeleah, like me was responding to the "felt like" post. She made a mistake by even acknowledging the "pregnancy is a death sentence" angle. Her first time of dealing with these #mendem who love gaslighting I'm sure.

There's zero excuse for healthcare workers dunking on a woman for describing her own pregnancy experience. They went as far as asking if she'd prefer to be sentenced to death but somehow we are the anti-natalists? Common sense is actually not common.

It’s the context it was used alongside using words like STOP IT in caps !! it’s dismissive and condescending!!! P.s: I’m sure you won’t normally call your female colleagues dear or even if you do , anyone has the right to say don’t call me that .. It’s also public knowledge the common denominator of disciplinary cases brought against a lot of male doctors .. So this is not about using it emails …It’s the CONTEXT..

Side note: It’s advisable to avoid terms of endearment unless you’re close to someone. I’ve led several resuscitations involving women in cardiac arrest during pregnancy, labour or the postpartum period, on the labour ward or in theatre. I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly. Medicine doesn’t always offer categorical yes-or-no answers. So YES, pregnancy can be life-threatening and sometimes fatal. It can feel like a death sentence to someone going through a terrifying experience, while others may have uncomplicated pregnancies. Both realities deserve acknowledgement. Hopefully, we’ll reach a point where every woman can describe her experience without fear of being dismissed, and fellow women can empathise whether or not they’ve experienced something similar.
Point noted my dear. I'm not here to antagonise you. You na my person... But, it's at this very critical point, viewers on the timeline look and take something home... Is PREGNANCY A DEATH SENTENCE or NOT. So, I ask you Dr LEAH, ... IS PREGNANCY A DEATH SENTENCE?

One thing I've noticed about Nigeria: empathy is often in short supply. Many people only realise the seriousness of a problem when they're the victim. Until then, it's you're overreacting.

…The ongoing debate about pregnancy and whether it is or isn’t a “death sentence” has exposed wider systemic problems in society. More worrying is the disregard some healthcare professionals have shown for empathy, patient autonomy and the ethical principles that should guide patient care. I hope every patient knows their rights, understands that their voice matters and feels able to speak up when their experiences are dismissed or invalidated. If you can’t acknowledge that people can have different experiences and outcomes, it says a lot about your willingness to consider perspectives beyond your own. Your experience does not invalidate someone else’s, and acknowledging theirs does not diminish yours. And if you’ve been blocked, it most likely means your comments have dismissed someone’s experience or shown disregard for the principles I’ve highlighted. I won’t engage with comments that belittle patients or invalidate what they’ve been through.

Dr Ose, Good evening from here. There is Nothing I want to say that has not yet been said in the comment section. You can only wake up someone sleeping, not someone pretending to Sleep. I know one thing is the same across board in Medical ethics…you are not permitted to dismiss a patient’s feeling, especially based on semantics. If a patient tells you this Pregnancy feels like a Roller coaster. I know you will not show them a picture of roller coaster and show them a picture of pregnancy arguing it’s not the same, nor if someone tells you, “Money nah water”, you won’t be arguing “Money is Not Water”, you drink water, you can never drink money. If a Pregnant woman tells you Omo! that pregnancy felt like I will die, and your friend went ahead to say, “these women make it feel like pregnancy is a death sentence”, you’re too smart to be arguing, she’s right; “Pregnancy is not a Death Sentence”. You can not create a blanket statement like “Pregnancy is a death Statement” or “Pregnancy is not a Death statement”, because to those that never made it out of pregnancy, that Pregnancy was their Death Statement. SELAH! ✌🏾 In all these, let’s not forget to vote Out Tinubu and Vote for Peter Obi so that Nigeria’s health system can get better.

Young women, please consider a career in medicine. We need more of you. We need women who will listen when other women say something is wrong. Women who understand that behind every maternal mortality statistic is a family whose life has changed forever. And above all, we need doctors who never lose their empathy. Thanks to our allies. We see you.
Let’s even leave semantics and the obvious figurative expression, why do you feel the need to argue with women on what pregnancy is or not? Like what does it do for you? What do you stand to gain when you say, “it’s not a death sentence” ? What exactly?
