Anglofuturism Episode 068 asks @edwest if Britain is real, whether to fear being murdered by the Spice Girls, and the relative decadence of sex parties and ennui. Watch below.

There's been a lot of talk in the last few weeks in edu circles about whether the trad education movement has failed, what it needs to do next, etc. This article is just the latest in a succession of examples that shows how us edu-trads have not been nearly as successful as we hoped in altering elite consensus on education. We have obviously seen with all the Labour party policies that we completely failed to convince Labour. But actually, it's not like we've really convinced the Conservatives either. This is Dan Hannan, major figure in Brexit, major figure in Conservative politics, presumably has some idea of who Michael Gove is - and here he is in the Telegraph confidently asserting that we no longer need to know things because we can look things up. (The ironies in this piece abound, by the way. He argues for lessons in spotting bad bogus arguments at the same time as building an article around the argument that memory doesn't matter any more. He argues that "identifying improbable claims" is a generic skill that can be taught in the abstract, at the same time as claiming that handwriting and geography are obsolete. He says that you can always just look up what you need, whilst signally failing to look up any of the evidence on the role of long-term memory...I could go on.) I wrote a few weeks ago that there was some evidence journalists at the Financial Times were waking up to all the evidence on cognitive science, its implications for schools, the international test evidence. But the elite understanding of this is a very thin layer, absolutely skin deep. The mass of second-hand dealers in ideas are still distilling their frenzy from Romantic pedagogy. Depressing. I honestly don't know what else we can do. We wrote the books. We had the debates. We built the schools. We aced the tests. And then it turned out nobody cared. Right now it is definitely a bleak time to be a trad. It feels like we are on Athelney Marshes, beset by vandals without and dissension within. BUT we have to keep the faith. Reality is an undefeated champion. Despair is a sin! What we do works! It may well be that for now, the New World with all its power & might etc., is going to have to step in to save our bacon for a bit. Maybe the momentum is shifting to @ehanford and Sold a Story, @rastokke and Chalk & Talk, @jettybe3 , etc. We have got to dig in. As Declan Rice said, it's not done!

In terms of rare potential Britain still has everything materially needed to be the world's richest country, perhaps even a great power. But it will take truly letting go of failed models and institutions, as well as about 30 years to get there.

Ok I hope this will be the most useful conversation you hear about Education this year. This week’s episode of The Amol Rajan Connection (ARC) with @daisychristo of No More Marking has really struck a chord. Anyone with kids; or who works in schools, colleges and universities; or who is interested in the very nature of learning and how the mind works; or what technology is doing to us, will enjoy this. That’s not my view alone; it’s the revealed view of the comments flooding in. We discuss: + working memory vs long-term memory + the risk of creating a Stupidogenic Society + why Knowledge is Freedom + schools for the rich and skills for the poor + how to optimise vocational education + the implications of AI for education + what children should learn + technology and the classroom + Labour’s education policy Something for your weekend perhaps. We’d be honoured if you’d others listening to this episode. Thanks so much for your time - and to Daisy, for a very special contribution to the ARC Universe. Available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music. youtu.be/Xcyc3LQkqjY?is=VRY_…

If British governance is to be drastically improved, I expect that many of its reformers will have come through a Civic Future programme. Glad to see this parallel institution take a more permanent form.
Since 2022, Civic Future has grown from a single Fellowship into policy courses, workshops, crisis simulations and two Talent Programmes. It’s a school in all but name. So today we’re making it official: the Civic Future School for Government 🏛️🧵 civicfuture.org/school-for-g…

I know it’s a young adult novel from 1954 — so demands a knowledge of the Roman Empire of a graduate today — but gosh, I just read this and it’s so so good!

For me this book is perhaps the purest distillation of Englishness. It contains love, war, class, faith, the beauty of the landscape and the regret of feelings never spoken. All that in barely 100 pages.
Almost no plot. Almost nothing to it at all. A love scene that never happens. No resolution because there is nothing really to resolve. Memory, loss, healing. Real joy, but fleeting. A painting uncovered as lots of other lovely things fade away. One of best books I’ve read for ages.

A big win for universalism. Wealthier people pay into collective security and the public realm. They should also benefit from it. A nation-state isn’t a charity. Government isn’t an NGO. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmn0…

The Tories are right to pledge to scrap the £100k childcare trap – and Labour should have acted first (as I wrote here). It’s not progressive for workers to be left tens of thousands of pounds worse off when they take on a promotion or more hours. And it’s particularly punitive for single-earner families in London and other big cities. arguably.uk/p/britain-cant-a…

Promotion should never come with a bill. Families shouldn’t be penalised because they choose to divide work & raising children in a way that works for them. We would scrap the £100k cliff edge for free childcare hours & Tax-Free Childcare, giving parents the freedom to make the choices that are right for their family.
