Using @massive_com's data through an AI agent, "you can get answers instantaneously that you need to make a trade decision."
Each answer is paid for through x402, and "every request is only a cent." — Stevie Palmateer

Agentic Finance (AiFi) spans trading, payments, permissions, and more.
Excited to share the latest paper from Coinbase Institute, co-authored alongside @CKHctp, @MurrLincoln, and @smshr98, which explores the infrastructure that enables M2M payments.
The internet’s business model was built around people: attention, ads, subscriptions and checkout. AI agents are changing that. They can retrieve and use content without sending a human reader back to the publisher.
That raises a real question for creators, publishers and developers: how can they get paid when an agent uses their work, sometimes for a fraction of a cent?
Our new Coinbase Institute @CoinbaseCBI paper, "Machine-to-machine payments in the AiFi era," examines why existing payment rails often struggle with high-velocity microtransactions—and why stablecoins on low-cost networks are a strong fit today.
The policy goal should be an open, interoperable payment layer, with safeguards that match the risks—not closed marketplaces that decide who can participate.

An AI agent that can buy data can keep working when the next step has a price.
Consider a research agent that needs a paid dataset or extra computing capacity. Protocols such as x402 let software request a resource, receive payment instructions, pay, and get access.
That closes a gap between planning a task and completing it. It also creates a new responsibility: controlling what the agent can spend.
Even small charges can become a large bill if a workflow repeats. A per-purchase limit needs a total budget, approved destinations, transaction records, and a clear point where human approval is required.
This is a building block of the machine economy: software acquiring resources to carry out delegated work.
Its usefulness depends on keeping purchasing authority narrower than technical capability. The agent’s ability to make a payment should never be the only reason that payment happens.

Someone has to foot the bill for the compute and bandwidth. Shouldn't it be the (abusive) crawler?

Cloudflare hosts 20-25% of the internet and just built a feature where AI agents automatically pay you when they scrape your data.
The protocol is called X402, an HTTP code that tells bots: pay a fraction of a cent or get nothing.
"Rather than having like 100 subscriptions, you just go and incrementally get whatever information you need". Crypto is the perfect currency for this agentic economy, and the AI crowd will have to accept stablecoins whether they like it or not.

There are ~$300B in tokenized assets today.
Global financial assets? Roughly $674 TRILLION.
@Matt_Hougan's point: tokenization could grow ~2,000x before it even reaches the size of today’s financial system.
If Wall Street really moves onchain, we’re still ridiculously early.

The market data provider @massive_com recently started selling US stock data to AI agents one request at a time, paid in USDC, with no account and no API key (using @coinbase's x402 payment standard). As @kleffew94 mentioned in the partnership announcement, and I fully agree with, agents need real-time market data without the friction of API keys, subscriptions, or human provisioning.
Market data has traditionally been licensed in advance: per seat for someone at a terminal, or under firm-level agreements for the systems trading on it. This model introduces a new kind of buyer: software that pays for a piece of data at the moment it needs it.
For that buyer, a price without reliable time context is incomplete. An agent receiving a single observation needs to know not just what the market said, but also exactly when it was true.
That makes timestamping part of the market-data infrastructure. Inside @TheHUB, packets are timestamped in hardware as they enter the network against a shared GPS-synchronized clock, creating a common time reference for the data moving through it.
