It’s so hubristic for Americans to sit back and think they know more about Mao than Chinese people do. Do you think they don’t know how bad the famine was just because their school history lessons gloss over it? Their parents and grandparents lived it. xitter.cf/haugejostein/status/21…
Under “dictator” Mao, life expectancy in China increased by 30 years, literacy rates went from 20% to 70%, steel output grew from 1 million to 23 million tons, 47 million hectares of land was taken from landlords and given to peasants, and China was unified under a strong central state and got nuclear weapons. Despite his failures, it does not take a rocket scientist to understand why Mao is revered in China.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Mao's Great Leap Forward and related policies caused an estimated 30-45 million famine deaths in 1959-1961 alone, with total excess deaths under his rule often estimated at 40 million or higher. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Chi… pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC43… chinafile.com/library/nyrb-c…

I’m responding to the community note which is irrelevant to the post. The failures are well known but there’s more to it. They fast forwarded through the industrial revolution we had, we’re too far removed to relate.

I don’t know why no one at work trivia wanted to go with my team name The Black Quizraelites

It’s ironic that what it takes to become Trump’s successor is completely eschewing the appeal Trump had. Trump is authentic, even when he lies, but JD’s inauthenticity is transparent. I can’t see it working out in 2028. xitter.cf/atrupar/status/2115138…
JD Vance says of the Middle East that it's "a region of the world made up of countries whose name I couldn't even pronounce"

G. K. Chesterton on loving thy neighbor. A sad thing about not knowing our neighbors as we once did is that they no longer test our patience — and thus build our character. More and more of our associations are completely voluntary. It's comfortable, but spiritually tragic.

Why don’t we have any of the good parts of self-diagnosed autism now? Bluntness. What happened to that?

You know who would be fun to put in this ad? The God Warrior. xitter.cf/firefox/status/2114498…
How is the internet less private than in 2006, when the whole family shared one computer? Back then, the internet was weird, personal, and all of ours. So, we got your favorite meme legends back together to say it louder: What happened to the internet? 1/3

Obama got me with that Cheesecake Factory line, and I generally don’t enjoy his speeches. If he’s making fun of Trump I can’t help think about how he might have prevented him, but it was a good line.

This is crazy, as working class people have increasingly realigned toward republicans, you’re just going to cede that. xitter.cf/OliverALarkin/status/2…
This is such an insane thing to say out loud. No wonder Ashley Moody has been campaigning from the basement. “When you stand up for representing the BOSSES and putting THEM first…we will thrive.” Florida, vote @AngieNixon to stand up for working people.

Puritanism is alive in Mass. xitter.cf/barbarismcrit/status/2…
Gonna go ahead and say the decision to forward all the funds people wanted to donate after the article to the awful person who wanted the bar to close was a bad choice

I would be curious to see the score for Chaldeans. My guess is that Muslims fare better. I will simply leave it at that. xitter.cf/PollTracker2024/status…
MSU/YouGov: Only 11% of Jewish likely voters in Michigan hold a negative view towards Muslims. 34% of Michigan likely voters hold a negative view towards Muslims.

My conclusion is there are good reasons to be skeptical the redevelopment plan will work out well for tenants, but until the Bernie/AOC bill or similar gets passed it’s between allowing market rate rentals into the area or continued deterioration. xitter.cf/zearl/status/211472429…

Neoliberalism won’t be defeated in a day. What are you going to do in the meantime?

They’ve made it so that substack is the only place anyone could possibly read anything, after we built this whole decentralized delivery system called the web. I guess the onus was probably on early web people to figure out a way to monetize, and they didn’t.

I hope Lula makes a dent in the corruption this time and breaks the cycle at least somewhat. Go out with a bang.

It’d be nice to see republicans punish a white guy for doing this kind of thing. Call me when it’s not just an excuse to be racist. Reap what you sow. xitter.cf/demsocsean/status/2114…
Oh wow so Vivek removed the tent part because that’s obviously true based on court records. So he has her mother calling her a liar with no actual detailing of said “lies” besides her claiming she lies about Vivek.
